ABSTINENCIA Y AYUNO: La abstinencia de comer carne se debe observar todos los viernes durante la Cuaresma. Esto se aplica a todas las personas mayores de 14 años. La obser-vancia del ayuno el Miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes Santo se aplica a todas las personas de 18 a 59 años. Ayunar significa que se puede comer una comida sin carne por día. Se pueden tomar otras dos comidas sin carne para mantener la fuerza, pero juntas no deberían ser igual a una comida completa. Los líquidos, incluida la leche y el jugo de fruta, pueden tomarse entre comidas. Si la salud o la capacidad para trabajar se ven afectadas, el ayuno no obliga. ABSTINENCE AND FASTING: Abstinence from eating meat is to be observed on all Fridays during Lent. This applies to all persons 14 and older. The observance of fasting on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday applies to all persons ages 18 to 59. Fasting means that one full meatless meal per day may be eaten. Two other meatless meals may be taken sufficient to maintain strength, but together they should not equal a full meal. Liquids, including milk and fruit juice, may be taken between meals. If health or ability to work are affected, fasting does

not oblige. Private, self-imposed obser-vance of fasting on Lenten weekdays is strongly recom-mended. Parents should ensure that children who are not bound by the laws of fast and absti-nence are taught an authentic sense of penance, conversion and reconciliation.

LENTEN OBSERVANCE Catholics are encouraged to participate in the Eucharistic liturgy and in the sacrament of penance during Lent. Likewise

encouraged are devotions such as Stations of the Cross, vigils and prayer services (with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, if opportune). Traditional practices—including increased prayer, Scripture and spiritual reading, alms, personal self-denial in food and drink, increased care and service to the sick and needy—are also suggested.

PENANCE AND RECONCILIATION —In this penitential season of Lent, the Christian faithful are obliged, and encouraged, to confess sac-ramentally all serious sins not previously acknowl-edged in individual confession. Communal celebra-tion of the Sacrament of Reconciliation will be offered at St. Catherine of Siena on Tuesday, March 13 at 7:00 p.m. This emphasizes the social and ecclesial aspects of sin and reconciliation. Individual confessions will be available in English and Spanish.

This precept must be fulfilled during the Easter duty season, which is from the first Sunday of Lent until Trinity Sunday, unless it is fulfilled for a just cause at some other time of the year.

Heavenly Father, we thank you for your tre-mendous gift of the Sacrament of Marriage. Enable us to grow in our intimacy with You

and with each other. Teach us the beauty of forgiveness so we may become more and

more one in heart, mind and body. Strengthen our communication with each other, and help us become living signs of love. Help us to be

examples of commitment, love, and service to our families and children. Make us a sign of the unity which Jesus prays for at the Last

Supper. We open ourselves to the guidance of your Holy Spirit, who empowers us to love in Jesus’ name

and walk in His footsteps. Amen

GIVE GOD THE GLORY A curious feature of the first half of Mark’s Gospel is the pattern of Jesus working a miracle, then telling the recipient of the miracle to keep still about it. Many theories have been offered: Mark is setting the stage for the great “secret” re-vealed when Peter will proclaim Jesus the Messiah at Caesarea Philippi; more skeptical commentators offer that Jesus, fully aware of human nature, knew that the way to spread the news was to tell people to keep it secret. The insight into this secret-keeping that serves us well, however, is that Jesus was initiating his public ministry according to the pattern that Paul describes. He was doing it for the glory of God—not for his own benefit, but for that of all. Paul would later write in Philip-pians that Jesus “humbled” himself to become like us. And we see this humility at work in today’s healing of the leper. Jesus is trying to reveal the presence of God’s reign among the peo-ple, not so that he himself might receive the glory, but so that God would be glorified through him. Imitating this pattern, which Paul encourages the Jewish and Greek Christian factions in Corinth to do, still serves us well today. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

A DIOS TODA LA GLORIA Una característica peculiar de la primera parte del Evangelio según san Marcos es que en general Jesús obra un milagro y luego le dice al beneficiario del milagro que no se lo cuente a nadie. Se ha especulado mucho al respecto: Mar-cos está preparando el terreno para el gran “secreto” que se revelará cuando Pedro proclame que Jesús es el Mesías en Cesárea de Filipo; otros comentaristas más escépticos sostienen que Jesús, quien era plenamente consciente de su naturaleza humana, sabía que la mejor manera de difundir la Buena Nueva era pidiéndole a las personas que la mantuvieran en secreto. La reflexión de esta manera de guardar el secreto que nos resulta muy útil, sin embargo, es que Jesús estaba comenzando su ministerio públi-co de la forma en que describe Pablo: lo estaba haciendo por la gloria de Dios, no para beneficio propio sino para beneficio de todos.
