Nach P. de Lagardes Anordnung folgt hier eine Liste alles desjenigen, was Andreas Masiusin seinem Peculium Syroram und in seinen in der Amsterdamer Ausgabe der Critici Sacri abge-druckten Bemerkungen zum Deuteronomium und zu Iosue aus seiner syrischen Handschrift insyrischer Sprache mitgeteilt hat

Das Peculium (in der Liste mit P bezeichnet) ist, wie fast alle Stiicke der beiden Bande derAntwerpener Polyglotte, welche die Grammatiken und Lexika und die Tractate enthalten, in zweiDrucken vorhanden. Ueber den doppelten Druck dieser beiden Bande gibt Max Rooses in seinem>Christophe Plantin* (vgl. Lagarde, Novae psalterii graeci editionis specimen 2*) S. 123 f. Aus-kunft Da das kostbare Werk kaum allgemein zuganglich sein wird, setze ich die Stelle her:

En comparant les trois exemplaires de oet ouvrage que le Mus6e Plantin-Moretus pos-sfcde, noo8 remarquons que le premier volume de YApparatus 1) est dans tous de la meme6dition, et comme, dans le compte des ouvriers, il n'est pas question de la r&mpressionde la Bible de Pagnino, nous sommes autoris6s a dire que, dSs le principe, ce volume futtir6 & 1213 exemplaires. Le second volume, dans les trois exemplaires, est de deux 6di-tions diflF6rente8, a Pexception de la grammaire h6braique qui est identique dans tous. Letroisidme volume est 6galement de deux 6ditions diff6rentes, & Texception destrait6s: Cha-naan, Index Biblicus, Hebraea, Chaldaea, Graeca et Latina nomina, Variae lectiones inChaldaicatn paraphrasim, In tabulam titulorum Novi Testamenti Syriaci et Variae lectionesin Latinis Bibliis. La pr6face g6n6rale est en partie identique, en partie de Tune et deTautre 6dition. On peut, d'aprs cela, pr6sumer que certains trait6s du dernier volume nedurent pas etre r6imprim6s.

Beide Drucke des Peculium bestehn aus 1 Seite Titel + 1 Seite Vorwort + 52 Seiten Text; imeraten Drucke folgt dann noch eine Seite Addenda et emendanda, welche im zweiten Druckeweg&llt, da die Nachtrage und Verbesserungen in den Text selbst eingefiigt sind. Der ersteDruck trSgt die Jahreszahl M.D.LXX1, der zweite M.D.LXXII. Im Uebrigen stimmen die beidenTitel iiberein bis auf die Typen, welche im zweiten Druck nur zum Teil dieselben sind, wie imersten, und das Druckerwappen. Ein >Editio altera oder dergleicheu ist auf dem Titel deszweiten Drucks nicht vermerkt

Ich habe meine Liste ausgearbeitet nach einem in meinem Besitz befindlichen Exemplar deszweiten Druckes, und habe sie nachher, als ich das Vorhandensein zweier Drucke entdeckt hattemit dem in der Gottinger Universitatsbibliothek befindlichen Exemplar des ersten Drucks 2) colla-tioniert Wesentliche Unterschiede beider habe ich nicht gefunden 8). Beide sind mit einer derPlantinschen Firma und den Correctoren der Biblia regia Ehre machenden Correctheit gedruckt.Unangenehm ist das Vorhandensein zweier Drucke nur deshalb, weil die genauen Citate mit Angabeder Columne, welche ich glaubte geben zu miissen, da Masius in der Anordnung der abgeleitetenFormen kein festes Princip hat, nun nur fiir den zweiten Druck passen. Denn da die Seiten 324 des zweiten Drucks je eine Zeile mehr enthalten, als die entsprechenden des ersten, und derzweite Druck im Anfang hier und da etwas compresser ist, als der erste , so ist jener hinter die-sem schon bei Seite 14 um eine volle Columne zuruckgeblieben : Col. 14 * des zweiten ist = Col.14* des ersten Drucks; nachher steigt der Unterschied noch etwas, nimmt dann aber wieder lang-8am ab, ohne jedoch ganz zu verschwinden. Ich habe mir daher iiberlegt, ob ich nicht alle Ci-tate umschreiben und dem ersten Drucke anpassen solle ; da aber die zweite Ausgabe eine editioemendata ist und nach Rooses' oben angefiihrter Mitteilung in mindestens ebenso vielen Exem-plaren verbreitet sein muft, wie die erste, habe ich es unterlassen. Will man meine Angabennach dem ersten Druck controllieren, so wird man in der Mehrzahl der Falle Eine, zuweilen sogarzwei Columnen weiter gehn mtissen, als ich angegeben habe.

Andreas Masius citiert durchgehends nur die Kapitel, nur in ganz vereinzelten F&llen auchdie Verse, in welchen die von ihm angefuhrten Worter vorkommen. Hierdurch ist, da es sich

oder auch als achter Band des Gan-zen aufgefuhrt wird.

2) Im sechsten Bande des Gottin-ger Exemplars der Biblia regia. Derachte Band des Gottinger Exemplars,welcher aus verschiedenen Stucken

des Apparatus zusammengesetzt istund ursprunglich nicht zu diesemExemplare gehorte, enthalt unter an-derem auch den zweiten Druck desPeculium.

3) Der grofite Untcrschied, der miraufgestoften ist, betrifft die Reihen-folge der Artikel von

fiast ilberall nur um einzelne WSrter handelt, die Herstellung der Liste sehr erechwert worden.

Glticklicherweise aber gibt Masius meistens die griechischen Worter an, denen die syrischen ent-sprechen. So konnte die Concordanz zur Septuaginta l) helfen, die freilich, obgleich sie nach der1597 in Prankfurt bei Wechels Erben erschienenen Ausgabe gearbeitet ist, also wesentlich den-selben Text zur Grundlage hat, den Masius zu citieren pflegt, doch sehr oft imStiche liefl. VonNutzen war mir auch der Thesaurus syriacus von PSmith durch die in ihn aufgenommenen, vonFField stammenden Listen iiber die Hex.-Uebersetzungen griechischer Worter und durch die,wohl auch von Field stammenden Citate aus Masius* Peculium, in welchen die Verse fast immerrichtig nachgewiesen sind 2).

Ich habe die Citate nach der Reihenfolge der biblischen Bticher geordnet Wenn ein grie-chisches Wort in dem citierten Kapitel zweimal oder ofter vorkommt, habe ich alle Verse, in de-nen es sich findet, angegeben, aber das Citat zu dem Verse gestellt, in welchem das griechischeWort zuerst vorkommt Ob das griechische Wort in solchen Fallen iiberall durch das betreffendesyrische Wort wiedergegeben war, oder nur an Einer oder einigen Stellen, muft dahingestellt bleiben.

Da wir es mit einer Uebersetzung aus dem Griechischen zu thun haben, habe ich mitAusnahme einiger Stellen, an denen es geraten schien den hebraischen Text zu citieren durch-gehends die griechischen Worter vorangestellt uud ihnen die syrischen folgen lassen. Wo Masiusdas griechische Wort angibt , habe ich es in der Form belassen , in welcher er es anfuhrt, magdiese Form der syrischen genau entsprechen oder nicht; wo Masius eine falsche griechische Formbildet, wie rcapevo^Xeiv P 5 1

,habe ich sie, meist stillschweigend , verbessert; wo er das grie-

chische Wort nicht anfiihrt, habe ich in eckigen Klammern das Wort des griecbischen Textes an-gegeben, zu welchem das syrische gehort Dagegen habe ich da, wo es sich um Ueber-setzungen des Aquiia, Symmachus oder Theodotion handelt, stets den hebriuschen Text citiert

Masius bildet ofter falsche syrische Formen, z. B. das Hiphil JLfroJ P 38 statt v*o{, dasPiel JL&fip P 32 2 statt v*am (vgl. seine Grammatik 38 39). Solche Formen babe ich stillschwei-gend corrigiert Unver&ndert angefuhrt sind dagegen die falsch gebildeten Singularformen , ausdenen sich die Pluralformen, welche Masius las, erschliefien lassen.

Die in die Amsterdamer Ausgabe der Critdci Sacri aufgenommenen Anmerkungen des Masiuszu Deuteronomium 1734 stehn im zweiten Teile des ersten Bandes, die Additamenta nova exMS. zu Iosue im zweiten Bande. Da sie leicht zu finden sind, habe ich mir genaue Citate, diesehr weitlaufig ausgefallen sein wtirden, geschenkt und citiere blos CS.

Die in CS angefuhrten syrischen Worter wimmeln von Druckfehlern , die sich jedoch mitHtiife der meistens daneben gegebenen lateinischen Uebersetzung leicht und sicher verbessern lassen,und meist stiilschweigend verbessert sind. Fiir den syrischen Druck sind in CS mit Ausnahmeder am Ende des Deuteronomiums citierten Bemerkung uber einen Zusatz des Samaritaners zumDekalog unpunktierte hebraische Buchstaben verwendet Die in meiner Liste stehenden Punkteund Vokale sind von mir hinzugefiigt : die lateinische Uebersetzung diente auch hier als Fiihrerin.

Die in CS mitgeteilten Citate aus Masius' syrischer Handschrift sind natiirlich mit den imPeculium mitgeteilten in Eine Liste eingereiht Ein Zweifel dariiber, welchen griechischen Wor-ten die angefiihrten syrischen entsprechen, konnte bei ihnen nicht statt haben, da die Anmerkun-gen von Vers zu Vers vorwarts schreiten. Ich habe daher die griechischen Worte, auch wennsie Masius nicht ausdriicklich anfiihrt, uneingeklammert vorangestellt

Masius' Handschrift enthielt, wie er in der Widmung seines Iosue 6 angibt, aufier IosueIudicum historias et Regum: praeterea Paralipomena , Ezdram, Esther, Iudith: deniqueTobiae, et Deuteronomii bonam partem.

Vorstehende Liste zeigt, daft er alle diese Biicher systematisch excerpiert hat mit Ausnahme derParalipomena und des Ezdras.

In der Widmung seiner Uebersetzung von Bar-Cepha's Buch uber das Paradies teilt Masiusmit, daft die in seinem Besitz befindliche syrische Uebersetzung der BUcher der Regna am Randehier und da Scholien habe, brevissima quidem illa, sed peracuta plerumque et docta, quae DiviSeveri Patriarchae titulum prae se ubique ferunt l). Auch diese, die sich gleichfails in den vonLagarde herausgegebenen Handschriften von Regn 7 und 8 finden, hat er fiir seine Sammlungenexcerpiert: Regn 7 9 3 21 19 8 9 11. Bei anderen Btichern erwahnt Masius solche Scholien nicht:auch die Londoner Handschriften von Iosue und Iudices haben keine Scholien.

Masius' Handschrift enthielt aulier den eilf volistandigen zwei unvollst&ndige Bticher. Diese,Deuteronomium und Tobias, miissen den Anfang und Schluft gebildet haben. Dazu stimmt, daBvom Deuteronomium der Anfang, von Tobias der Schluli fehlt Das erste Citat stammt aus Deut15 7 , das letzte aus Tob 7 s. DaB durch diese Citate zugleich Anfang und Ende der Handschriftziemlich genau bestimmt sind, ergibt sich mir aus folgenden Erwagungen.

Andreas Masius gibt zuweilen die Kapitel , welchen seine Citate entstammen , falsch an ; socitiert er statt Iudith 12 stets >Iudith 11, statt 1. Reg. 4 stets 1. Reg. 1. Solche Fehlerlassen sich, soweit sie nicht einfache Schreib- oder Druckfehler sind, am leichtesten durch dieAnnahme erklaren, dali Masius seiner Handschrift, um ihre Benutzung zu erleichtern, die Kapitel-zahlen beigeschrieben hatte und dabei nicht immer ganz genau gewesen war, spater aber, als erseine Excerpte machte, sich ganz auf jene Beischriften verlieli und durch sie zuweilen zu falschenAngaben veranlalit wurde. Insbesondere der zweite der beiden angefuhrten Fehler erklart sich80 sehr einfach : in der Handschrift war hier ein Blatt ausgefailen, welches den Schluti des erstenKapitels, das zweite und dritte Kapitel, und den Anfang des vierten enthielt: Masius hatte denBeginn von Kap. 1 und 5 richtig notiert, aber versaumt zu beraerken, daft ein Blatt fehle unddas neue Blatt mit dem so- und so-vielten Yerse des vierten Kapitels beginne, und so kam erdazu, das auf dem neuen Blatte zuerst Stehende als auch noch aus Kap. 1 stammend zu citieren.Die Annahme, dali Masius so mit seiner Handschrift verfahren ist, ist ja auch an sich sehr wahrschein-lich : ich erinnere, um nur Ein Beispiel anzufiihren, an die Beischriften, mit welchen Antonius Gig-geius (Ceriani, Monumenta 7 l l Pescitto 1 8 1 ) die beiden von Ceriani in Photolithographie heraus-gegebenen Mailander Handschriften verziert hat Nun gibt Masius, wahrend er sonst im Tobiastiberall richtig citiert, fiir das letzte Citat falschlich Tob. 6 statt Tob. 7 an. Daraus folgt mir,

daft von dem siebenten Kapitel nur noch ein Teil in seiner Handschrift stand, und er dadurch,als er seine Beischrift zum Anfang von Kap. 6 gemacht hatte, zu der Annahme verfuhrt wurde,der Rest der Handschrift gehore dem sechsten Kapitel an, und keine weitere Beischrift machte.

Folgt mir hier beim Schlusse aus dem Fehler im Citieren, daft das letzte Citat ungef&hr mitdem Ende der Handschrift zusammenfallt , so folgt mir beim Anfange dasselbe aus der Genauig-keit des ersten Citats. Masius gibt fttr ly oder ^jju awxp7751^ ganz gegen seine Gewohnheitauch den Yers an: Deuter. 15. vers. 7, wahrend er dies gleich bei den folgenden Citaten nichtmehr thut Daraus schlielie ich, dalJ Deuter. 15. vers. 7 in der Handschrift selbst, um ihrenAnfang zu bezeichnen , vermerkt stand. Sollte aber auch dieser SchluIJ falsch sein, so kann dochder Text keinesfalls weit vor Deut 15 7 begonnen haben. Da die ersten Citate dicht auf einanderfolgen (15 7 9 11 13), 80 wiirde die Annahme allen Gesetzen der WahrscheinJichkeit widersprechen,daft noch ein grdtteres Stiick vorhergegangen sei, das Masius ganz unexcerpiert gelassen hatte.

Tobias bis 7 8 oder etwas weiter (genauer, wie sich unten zeigen wird, bis 7n),wahrscheinlich in dieser Reihenfolge. Sie war am Anfange und Schlusse defekt Urspriinglichhat sie jedenfalls mit der Genesis begonnen und mindestens bis zum Schlusse von Tobias gereicht

Da sie mit der Mailander hexaplarischen Handschrift zusammen gerade ein ganzes Altes Te-stament ausraacht, so ist seit Bjornst&hl (bei PJBruns in Eichhorns Repertorium 3 167 170/171)ofter vermutet worden , dali sie urspriinglich mit jener zusammengehort habe. Diese Vermutungglaube ich , soweit das in diesem Falle iiberhaupt moglich ist, zur GewiBheit erheben zu konnen.

In Masius' Handschrift fehlte Deut 26 9 zabzr^28 29 ^fiipac xal oox. Da dieser Defekt sichnicht weit vom Anfange der Handschrift fand, so ist anzunehmen, daB das Fehlende den SchluB

der ersten erhaltenen Lage gebildet hatte, und daft sein Verlust durch den Verlust des Anfangesdieser Lage veranlaiit war. Das Fehiende niramt im griechischen Texte bei Tischendorf 1207*Zeilen, bei EiS 5 Columnen 2 Zeilen ein, das vorher Erhaltene (von Deut 15 7 an gerechnet)bei Tischendorf 492 1 / Zeilen, bei Eft 20 Columnen + H Zeilen; daraus folgt, daft sich jenes zudiesem wie 1 : 4 verhielt Nun spricht Masius von aliquot paginae omissae*, aber ich bezweifle,daB mehr als Ein Blatt gefehlt hat Denn wenn auch nur zwei Blatter gefehlt hatten, so hatte dieLage schon aus 12 Blattern (8 erhaltenen, 2 vorn und 2 hinten verlorenen) bestehn mussen; einBlick in Wrights Katalog syrischer Handschriften lehrt aber, daft zwar zehnblattrige Lagen allge-mein iibiich waren, starkere Lagen jedoch, zumal in alten Handschriften, nur ausnahmsweise vor-kommen *). Ein groBeres Format ist iibrigens bei dieser Handschrift schon um ihres groBen Um-fanges willen wahrscheinlicher, als ein kleineres.

Ein zweiter Defekt fand sich, wie Masius zwar nicht ausdnicklich angibt, wie aber aus seinenCitaten hervorgeht, in Regn a 14. Die Liicke muft hinter xaTaXo{ia 1 13 begonnen und vorOTLonebw 4is geendigt haben. I194 12 nimmt bei Tischendorf 160 Zeilen, bei Efo 6 Columnen+ 28 Zeilen ein. Nehmen wir an, dafi hinter 1 18 und vor 4 13 noch mehrere Verse vorhandenwaren, welche Masius nur nicht excerpiert hat, so ergibt sich, dafi hier ungefahr ebenso vielfehlte, wie im Deuteronomium. Wahrscheinlich war also auch hier Ein Blatt ausgefallen 2 ).

Als wahrscheinlicher Normalumfang eines Blattes der Handschrift ergibt sich hieraus: ca. 120125 Zeilen des Tischendorfschen, ca. 5 Columnen des Eft'schen Textes.

Vergleichen wir hiermit den Umfang der Bl&tter der Mailander Handschrift Ich habe bc*-

Die Mailander Handschrift ist nicht ganz gleichmaBig geschrieben, der Durchschnittsumfang stimmtaber genau mit dem erschlossenen Durchschnittsumfange eines Blattes der Masius'schen Hand-schrift tiberein. Daraus folgt als so gut wie gewiB, dali beide Handschriiten in der That ur-spriinglich als zwei Bande Einer Handschrift zusammengehorten.

Mtissen wir hiernach den Verlust der Handschrift des Masius um so mehr hedauern , so wirdder Nachweis nicht unwillkommen sein, daft uns ein Teil von ihr, wenn auch nur in Abschrift,erhalten ist

Es ist bekannt, daft die auf uns gekommene syrische Uebersetzung des Tobias aus zweiStiicken verschiedener Herkunft, li7n und 7 1114 15, zusammengesetzt ist Der erste Teilwird in der Ueberschrift und einer Beischrift zu 7n als Septuaginta-Uebersetzung bezeichnetHieraus und aus dem Charakter der Uebersetzung hat man als wahrscheinlich gefolgert, datt li 7 11 der Uebersetzung Pauls von Tella angehore: FField, Hexapla 1 lxviiir : ThNoldeke in denMonatsbeiichten der Berliner Akademie der Wissenschaften 1879, 46. Field und Noldeke habenes sich entgehn lassen, daB schon 1869 AMCeriani in Le edizioni e i manoscritti delle versionisiriache del Vecchio Testamento (in den Mtoiorie del R. Istituto Lombardo 11 2) S. 22 gesagt hatte:

Che la prima parte di Tobia sia 1'Esaplare, lo si vede confrontando le frequenti citazioni, cheha fatte di quella parte Masio dal suo codice Esaplare e si trovano nel suo Syrorum Peculium.

Was Ceriani damals ausgesprochen hat, ohne die Belege anzufuhren, das kann aus meiner Listejeder auf den ersten Blick ersehen l ).

Das letzte Citat des Masius stammt aus Tob 7 s , und es ist oben gezeigt worden , da& dieHandschrift wohl nicht viel weiter reichte. Halt man hiermit die in der Ussher^schen Handschrift(ZATW 9 193210) am Rande von Tob 7n stehende, nicht von dem Schreiber dieser Hand-schrift, sondern von dem Zusammensteller unseres jetzigen Tobiastextes -) herstammende Notiz

zusammen, so wird man erkennen, wie richtig ENestle vermutet hat 8), dafodas Buch Tobit in dem verlorenen Codex des Masius . . . schon friih zufallig versttimmeltwar, und dafo alle noch vorhandenen Texte dieser syrischen Uebersetzung [vonTob li7 11]aus jenem Codex nach seiner Yerstiimmelung geflossen sind.

. Auf die Bedeutung dieser Thatsache fur die Geschichte des Textes der syrischen Apokryphenkann ich hier nicht eingehn. Ebenso wenig ist es moglich, uber den Text der Handschrift desMasius und sein Verhaltnis zu den sonst erhaltenen Resten der Uebersetzung Pauls von Tella zusprechen, woriiber sich tibrigens jeder aus der mitgeteilten Liste bequem orientieren kann.
