The Woodland Trust
The Woodland Trust is the UK’s leading wood conservation charity. Over the last 30years it has bought more than 1,000 woods. The Trust has over 300,000 membersand supporters.
How did it start?
The Woodland Trust’s founder was Kenneth Watkins, a retired farmer living in Devon. He was worried about how quickly woods were disappearing. He started the Trustwith three friends in 1972. They started buying woods across the country in
Why do woods matter?
Trees are essential to life. Woods are important for wildlife and people. They stabilisethe soil, generate oxygen and store carbon. They are home to an enormous variety ofplants and animals and they provide us with raw materials such as wood and shelter.
What do Woodland Trust members believe?
They believe …• there should be at least twice as much native trees in the UK• there should be no more loss of any ancient woods• every child should have a chance to plant a tree• there should be a wood close to everyone’s home• everyone should recognise that trees and woods are an essential part of ahealthy environmentThe Woodland Trust aims to create more woods; protect woods, trees and their wildlifefor the future and inspire everyone to enjoy and value woods and trees. If you want to find out more, go to: http://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk
