an archive school. We have also started collect
ing information about search possibilities for music archives in various countries.
However, a great deal of work remains to be
done. Our main effort the upcoming year will
be a database for archival holdings and it will be mounted on the IAML website. A detailed out line is already there, but programming is needed and we also need to work on the multi
lingual question. We hope to have something to
show next year.
We are still exploring how we can join forces with other organisations and include more part
ners in the project. We are also interested in
making one-stop-searches in various databases
and here we are looking into the possibility to use an existing portal and rely on its
infrastructure.

Bibliography Commission: Working Group on Hoftneister
At the 2008 Naples meeting, Chris Banks re
ported that the Working Group on Hofmeister
XIX had finished its task as charged. However,
there were new tasks be undertaken, such as
publicity for the project, enriching the data and
extending coverage. Council unanimously ap
proved the establishment of a new provisional
Working Group on Hofmeister for one year,
chaired by Chris Banks. Since no formal proposal to extend the one
year Working Group was put forward at the
Amsterdam meeting, the Working Group on
Hofmeister has ended. Planning is in progress for the establishment of a new Working Group
focused on extending coverage online for years
not included in the Hofmeister XIX project.
Please see the Bibliography Commission re
port for recent Hofmeister activities.
Chris Banks Former Chair
Cataloguing Commission: Working Group on the Exchange of Authority Data
A Brief Summary
At the time I was asked to chair the group, its
main aim appeared to be the safeguarding
of the specific interest of music uniform titles,
particularly in the context of the Virtual Inter
national Authority File project (VIAF). That
project's goal is to "lower the cost and increase
the utility of library authority files by matching and linking the authority files of national li braries, and then making that information avail
able on the Web." The methodology involves
taking data sets from several national libraries,
and using "OCLC's proven software" to find matches. I was, and remain skeptical of this
strategy for music works. Matching personal
names is not a specifically music problem; nor,
theoretically is matching titles, but it is that this is the present interest. After several years'
work, there is a test version available at
http://viaf.org/
I submitted the title: "Cosi fan tutte"
The suggested matches were:
nozze di figaro
requiem mass
ballo in maschera
pulcinella vater vater lichterloh
rose pilgerfahrt etc.
Thinking that this might be a "one-off" I then entered "Kindertotenlieder".
Result:
tito manlio nozze di figaro lucia di lammermoor Opernquerschnitt
rosina
conciertos
symphonie en re mineur version pour grand
orgue sinfonie d moll
