The clarification of the nature of the "phosphorescent state s of photoexeitod organic molecules ms the triplet state and its detection In absorption has led to the development of triplet-triplet absorption spectroscopy as an important tool in quantitative photochemistry and In the study of photophysical and, more recently, radiation chemical processes in general. Early studies employed high Intensity light beams and were restricted by the lifetime of the mctasteble state to viscous media. The introduction of the flash photolysis technique allowed the facile detection of triplet-triplet absorption In fluid media, thus extending considerably the range of materials open to Investigation. As alternative methods of significantly populutlnK the triplet state both pulsed (laser) excitation and pulse (electron) radlolyefs ere now in routine nee. We have compiled a bibliography of papers dealing with triplet-triplet absorption spectroscopy which we hope Is reasonably complete through February 1982. The number of references (about 600) has mandated the separation of this list into two parts. Part A includes work published before 1976! Part B From then until the above cutoff date. The Initial set of references was obtained as a s~bset of u profile on transient spectra matched against our current awareness procedures and by a retrospective literature search performed by Hr. James Brumaer (whose assistance In this stake we gratefully acknowledge), This was augmented by various koyword searches of the RCI)C bibliographic data base. 1 The keywords (and logic) chosen were (triplet state and absorption spectra) or triplet-trlplet absorption or trlplet-trlplet transition. Additionally the rather inaccessible review of Labhart and Helnzelmann 2 proved extremely useful in guidlng our coverage of the early work. Further references were secured from the biologically oriented review of Benaesson et el. 3 and from the inspection of the reference lists of a large number of papers targeted by our search atruteKy. We h a v e Included only those papers providing quantitative spectral information much as peak locations and extinction coefficients. Studies In whloh the observation of e known triplet-triplet absorption Is used simply us a kinetic tool have generally been omitted. Work in the gum phase has been excluded end we have not covered the theoretical aspects of the phenomenon. The cx~ot identity of the metaatable absorber In coordination compounds is generally uncertain and these have also been excluded from consideration although studies on chlorophylls and porphyrina have been retained. As before internal laboratory reports and conference proceedings have usually been discarded. The resulting list of references has been printed in roughly chronological order. REFMNCES 1. See R. H.
