Connecting You to Jesus When Rahab hid the Israelite spies, she was putting her faith in the God of Israel (see Hebrews 11:31). She had heard of God’s power, and she chose to risk her life to help God’s people. God honored this woman’s faith. Not only was her life spared when the Israelites conquered Jericho, but Rahab was also welcomed to live among the Israelites and even included in the line of Christ Himself (see Matthew 1:5).

  • TIPGreet kids as they arrive, and ask, What’s a great

    hiding spot in your house?

Tip Print the words of Psalm 96:3 on a large sheet of

paper or on a whiteboard to display. Divide verse into four sections for students

to see while coming up with hand motions.

Opening Music (5 minutes)As children come into the large-group area, play “All for Je-sus” (on Media DVD or track 1 on Worship CD). Lead children in singing and doing motions (see Song Motion Chart on p. 139). Because of God’s amazing power, we can respond in trust and worship, giving our ALL for Jesus!

Icebreaker (5 minutes)Ahead of time, print today’s Big Idea on a small piece of paper.

Everyone stand! We’re going to play a secret passing game to help us start thinking about God’s power! Students walk around and shake each other’s hands. Slip the paper into the hand of one student. That student then shakes another stu-dent’s hand and passes the paper to him or her. Students con-tinue to pass paper until you call time. Student who has paper reads aloud the Big Idea. Great job! God’s power is limitless! Today we’re going to talk about what someone who had heard amazing stories about God’s power did.

Bible Verse (10 minutes)In our Bible verse today, we’ll find out something im-

portant that we can all do! Open your Bible to Psalm 96:3, and read it aloud. This verse says that everyone of us can declare, or tell, the great things God has done for us!

Divide the group into four sections, and appoint a leader for each section. Give each section one part of the verse (“Declare his glory,” “among the nations,” “his marvelous deeds,” “among all peoples”). Give each section one minute to come up with a motion for their part of the verse. Then invite each section leader to lead his or her section in doing their motion and call-ing out the appropriate phrase to the rest of the group. Show “Lesson 5: Memory Verse Blocks” on Media DVD. Lead students in repeating the verse several times as they do their motions, filling in from memory the words that disappear as the clip pro-gresses. When we know about God’s power, we can tell oth-ers about the great things God has done!

Optional Game Ahead of time, make two masking-tape lines 15 feet (4.5 m) apart to create start and finish lines.

Today we’re going to have a leap frog race! I need some volunteers! Select six or eight volunteers, half girls and half boys. Divide girls and boys into two teams. Teams line up behind start line. At your signal, first player on each team hops forward like a frog. Then the second player on each team hops over the first player. The third player on each team hops over both the first and second players. Last player in line hops over other play-ers, and volunteers continue to jump over teammates until all of them cross the finish line.

Great job! You all worked together to play this game. In today’s story, two men worked together to complete a task Joshua asked them to do. Let’s find out what these men did!

Music (15 minutes) We serve a powerful God! God showed His power in Bible times, and He STILL shows His power today! One of the ways we can see God’s power in our lives is in the way He meets all our needs—especially our need for a Savior! Lead children in singing and doing motions for “My God Will Meet All Your Needs” (on Media DVD or track 6 on Worship CD; see Song Motion Chart on p. 144).

God is a merciful God! He is a faithful to forgive us, no matter what! We can always trust that if we come to God when we mess up, we’re forgiven! Lead students in singing and doing motions for “Merciful Jesus” (on Media DVD or track 5 on Worship CD; see Song Motion Chart on p. 143).

Because of God’s power, we can trust Him for strength and courage when we need it! Lead students in singing and doing motions for “Be Strong and Courageous” (on Media DVD or track 3 on Worship CD; see Song Motion Chart on p. 141).

Story Starter (5 minutes)To get ready for our story, we are going to play a game of I Spy. Let’s see how well you can guess who or what I’m looking at! Are you ready? I spy someone with blond hair. Students offer suggestions until someone guesses correctly. Great job! I spy someone wearing a blue shirt. Continue spying game as time permits. Today we are going to hear about two spies who had to hide when people were looking for them. Let’s find out who the spies were and what happened to them!

    Joshua 2

STORYTELLING IDEA Invite three adult volunteers to tell story in a Readers’ Theater. Reader 1 should be female and Readers 2 and 3 should be male. Print out three copies of Readers’ Theater Script (from CD-ROM) one for each volunteer.

Sending Out SpiesREADER 1: Joshua was the leader of Israel, you know. And he sent two spies to check out Jericho.

READER 2: The spies, they did spy, each as quiet as a mouse. And in Jericho town, they went to Rahab’s house.

READER 3: When the king realized that the spies were around, he let Rahab know that he wanted them found!

Rahab’s ChoiceREADER 1: “They were here!” Rahab said. “But they’ve now run away! I think they have headed, uh, maybe THAT way.” (Point in opposite directions.)

READER 2: So she wouldn’t get caught, Rahab covered the proof by hiding the spies up on top of her roof.

READER 3: Then later that night, Rahab talked with the spies. She wanted to say what she’d come to realize.

READER 1: “I know God is with you and He’s giving you this land. I know He protects you with His mighty hand. The strength of your God makes us tremble with fear. We are just plain scared when your people come near!”

READER 2: Rahab knew God was on Israel’s side. So there was a reason she let the spies hide. She wanted their help and a little bit more. Here is the favor she asked the spies for.

An Agreement MadeREADER 3: This is what Rahab asked the two spies to do.

Big IdeaWe can recognize God’s amazing power and choose to trust in Him.

Tip Invite a volunteer to read aloud the defini-tion of the word “oath” on page 315 in What

the Bible Is All About for Kids to learn about the kind of promise the spies made to Rahab.

READER 1: “Be kind to my family, as I was to you.”

READER 2: “We’ll help you; we’ll save you,” the spies said. “It’s true!”

READER 3: “But there’s something important we must ask of you.”

READER 2: “Don’t tell folks about us, and don’t lift a hand. Then you will be safe when God gives us the land.”

READER 1: “It’s a deal!” said Rahab. “You’ve given me hope. Now go! Out the window! Grab on to this rope! Go hide in the hills and then on the third day, you can make your escape! You’ll be on your way!”

A Red Cord READER 2: The spies said, “We’ve made you a promise today. But we only can keep it if you will obey.”

Reader 3: “Listen up—pay attention! Now here’s what to do. Hang a red cord in the window that we will go through.”

READER 2: “Bring all of your family and keep them inside. Keep out of the street—in your house you must hide.”

READER 3: “And remember, don’t tell folks what we’re gonna do. Or we can’t keep the promise we just made to you.”

READER 1: “Don’t worry,” said Rahab, “I’ll do what you say. Now hurry, get going! Please be on your way!”

READER 2: So Rahab hung up a long cord that was red. She followed exactly what those spies had said.

Back to Joshua READER 3: The spies went and hid. For three days they laid low, until the king’s men went back to Jericho.

READER 1: The spies went to Joshua when things were all clear.

READER 2: They told him, “The people are living in fear!”

READER 3: “God is giving us this land, of that there’s no doubt. That’s what we learned when we checked the place out.”

READER 1: In the end, Rahab felt very glad and relieved. Rahab’s family was saved, because Rahab believed!

Prayer (5 minutes)Ask God to show you ways that His power has helped you. Pause for kids to pray silently, and then pray, Dear God, please help each of us to trust You. We love You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Dismiss to Small Groups As you go to your small groups, think about reasons why we can trust in God. We’ll talk more about those reasons when we get into our small groups.

Wrap-UpWhen Rahab heard about God and His awesome power, she chose to believe and trust Him. Show red ribbon. The red cord Rahab hung from her window showed that she trusted God with her life. We can choose to believe and trust in God, too! Read aloud Psalm 96:3.

When we listen to and read Bible stories, we know even more about God’s great power! When we see God’s power, we can tell others about the great things God has done! Provide “Connecting Kids to Jesus” (on CD-ROM) for small-group leaders. Encourage small-group leaders to talk with interested students about salvation.

Big IdeaWe can recognize God’s amazing power and choose to trust in Him.

Connecting Kids to Jesus When Rahab hid the Israelite spies, she showed faith in the God of Israel. She had heard of God’s power, and she chose to help God’s people, even though the situation was scary. God rewarded Rahab for her faith! When the Israelites took over Jericho, Rahab was saved, and she lived with the Israelite people. In fact, Rahab was one of Jesus’ ancestors!
