The Power of the Holy Spirit

Almost 2,000 years ago, a miraculous, momen-

    tous event occurredthe New estament

Church was ounded on the Feast o

Pentecost. What made this event so astoundingand

Acts 2 records that the circumstances o that day weretruly dramaticwas the giving o Gods Holy Spirit to

the ollowers o Jesus Christ, just as He had promised

    (John 14:16-17, 26; 15:26; 16:7-14; Acts 1:4-5, 8).

What is this Holy Spirit that came on Jesus ollowers

that day? Why did these things happen? What should

we learn rom those strange occurrences? Even more

importantly, what role does Gods Holy Spirit have in a

    Christians lie?

o understand this topic, we must first understand

what the Holy Spirit is and what it is not. o grasp

that, we must understand what the Holy Spirit doesina Christians lie.

What does the Bible teach about the Holy Spirit? Te

answer to this question holds the truth o the amazing

uture God has in store or every human being. Well

see that Gods Holy Spirit is the catalyst in a trans-

    ormed Christian lie.

The Power of the Holy Spirit

Many scriptures reer to the HolySpirit as the power o God (Zechariah4:6; Micah 3:8). Paul told imothy thatit is the spirit o...power and o loveand o a sound mind (2 imothy 1:7,emphasis added throughout).

Luke 4:14 records that Jesus Christbegan His ministry in thepower o the

Spirit. Luke 1:35 identifies the Holy

Spirit with the power o the Highest.Speaking o the Holy Spirit, whichwould be given to His ollowers aferHis death, Jesus told them, You shallreceivepower when the Holy Spirit hascome upon you... (Acts 1:8).

Peter relates how God anointedJesus o Nazareth with the Holy Spirit

and with power, [and Jesus] went about

doing good and healing all who wereoppressed by the devil,or God waswith Him(Acts 10:38). Te Holy Spiritis here associated with thepower bywhich God was with Himthe powerthrough which Jesus Christ perormedmighty miracles during His earthly, physical ministry. Te Holy Spirit is theverypresence o Gods power activelyworking in His servants.

Te apostle Pauls desire was that themembers o the Church in Rome wouldabound in hope by thepower o the

Holy Spirit, in the same way that JesusChrist had worked through him inmighty signs and wonders, by the powero the Spirit o God (Romans 15:13, 19).

Divine inspiration by the SpiritTe Bible also shows that God

inspires and guides His prophets andservants through the power o the HolySpirit. Peter noted that prophecy nevercame by the will o man, but holy meno God spoke as they were moved bythe Holy Spirit (2 Peter 1:21).

Paul stated that Gods plan had beenrevealed by the Spirit to His holy apos-tles and prophets (Ephesians 3:5), and

that his own teachings were inspired bythe spirit (1 Corinthians 2:13). Paul, in1 Corinthians 2:9-10, explains that Godthrough His Spirit has revealed to usthe things which He has prepared orthose who love Him. God the Fatheris the Revealer, working through HisSpirit in those who serve Him.

Jesus Christ told His ollowers thatthe Holy Spirit, which the Father wouldsend to them, will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance allthings that I said to you (John 14:26).

Its through Gods Spirit within usthat we can gain spiritual understand-

ing and insight. For what man knows

the things o a man except [by] the spir-it o the man which is in him? Even sono one knows the things o God except[by] the Spirit o God (1 Corinthians2:11-12).

Jesus Christ had this spiritual under-standing in abundance. As the Messiah,He was prophesied to have the Spirito wisdom and understanding, theSpirit o counsel and might, the Spirit oknowledge and o the ear o the L(Isaiah 11:2).

What the Holy Spirit isntTe traditional Christian view o the

Holy Spirit presents it not only as thepower o God, but also a third personwith the Father and Son in a rinity. But when the Bible is taken at ace valueits clear that its neverpresented as aseparate person. Its always presented asan attribute or power o God. Tere aremany scriptures that demonstrate itsnot a divine person. For example, theHoly Spirit is reerred to as a gif (Acts10:45; 1 imothy 4:14). We are told thatit can be quenched (1 Tessalonians5:19), that it can bepoured out (Acts2:17; 10:45), and that we are baptized

with it (Matthew 3:11). It must bestirred up within us (2 imothy 1:6),and it also renews us (itus 3:5). Teseare certainly not attributes o a person.Tey certainly are attributes o Godscharacter and power.

Tis Spirit is also called the HolySpirit o promise...the guarantee o ourinheritance...the spirit o wisdom andrevelation... (Ephesians 1:13, 14, 17).

Tis Spirit is not only the Spirit oGod the Father; its also the Spirit oChrist (Romans 8:9; Philippians 1:19; 1Peter 1:11). It dwells within Christians, leading and enabling us to be children

    o God (Romans 8:14).

Throughout the Bible the Holy Spirit is spoken of in the

Bible as being Gods divine power. The Anchor BibleDictionary, in its article on the Holy Spirit, describes it as

The manifestation of divine presence and power perceptible

especially in prophetic inspiration (Vol. 3, Doubleday, New

    York, 1992, p. 260).

The Power of the Holy Spirit

6 A Bible study aid presented by Beyond Today television 7

In contrast to God the Father andJesus Christ, who are consistentlycompared to human beings in theirorm and shape, the Holy Spirit is justas consistently represented in a com-pletely different manner. It is describedas appearing as a dove (Matthew 3:16;Mark 1:10; Luke 3:22; John 1:32) and astongues o fire (Acts 2:3). Jesus Christcompared it with living water (John7:37-39).

Tere is urther evidence that the

Holy Spirit is not a person, but is thedivine power o God. In Matthew 1:20,

we read that Jesus was begotten bythe Holy Spirit (Moffatt translation).Yet Jesus Christ continually prayed toand addressed the Father, not the HolySpirit, as His ather (Matthew 10:32, 33;11:25-27; 12:50; 15:13; 16:17, 27; 18:10,35). He never represented the HolySpirit as His Father.

(Teres so much more evidence thatthe Holy Spirit is Gods power, mind, and lie essence through which Hebegets us as His children, and that it is

not a divine person. Read all about it inour ree study aid Is God a Trinity?)

We must understand what it meansto be led by the Spirit. Gods Spiritdoesnt drive, drag or push us around; itleadsus. It will not prevent us rom sin-ning, nor will it orce us to do what isright. It leads us, but we must be willing

    to ollow.

How does Gods Spirit lead us? Letsconsider a ew ways.

The Holy Spirit keeps us incontact with Gods mind

Gods Spirit works with our mind.

Te apostle John describes it this way:

Exactly what is a Christian? Howdoes the Bible define a Christian inthe most accurate sense?

Te Scriptures clearly identi-y who belongs to Christthatis, who we might term a trueChristian. Notice the apostle Paulsteaching in Romans 8:9: Now ianyone does not have the Spirito Christ, he is not His(empha-sis added throughout). Te HolySpirit, then, is an essential aspecto the biblical definition o aChristian. Further, only those whoare led by Gods Spirit have accessto eternal lie.

Paul continues in verse 11, Buti the Spirit o Him who raisedJesus rom the dead dwells inyou, He who raised Christ romthe dead will also give lie to yourmortal bodies through His Spirit[which] dwells in you.

It becomes abundantly clear thatthe Holy Spirit plays a major rolein the lives o Christians. In verse14 Paul defines the Christian veryclearly: For as many as are led bythe Spirit o God, these are sonso God.Te Holy Spirit identifiesus with Christ (verse 9), it makesimmortality possible to human, mortal beings (verse 11), it makespossible an obedient, overcomingChristian lie (verse 13), and ittruly leads (guides, empowers andmotivates) the sons o God. Inshort, Gods Spiritalso called theSpirit o Christis what makes onea Christian, a Spirit-led ollower oJesus Christ.

I the Holy Spirit is what definesa Christian and makes one a childo God, it is most vital that welearn and understand more aboutthat Spirit and its role.

hat does Gods Holy Spirit do for us as Christians? This question goes to the heart of our religious beliefs,

because without the power of Gods Spirit we can

have no deep, close relationship with the Father, nor can we

become His children. It is because the Spirit dwells in us that we

are called the children of God (Romans 8:14-17).

Now he who keeps His command-ments abides in Him, and He in him.And by this we know that He abides inus, by the Spirit [which] He has givenus (1 John 3:24). Trough Gods Spirit, which He gives us, we can be influ-enced by Him or the good and obeyGods commandments. Tis is in starkcontrast to the world around us and ourown nature, which influence us towardevil.

Gods Spirit also helps us come to adeeper comprehension o His truth.

When Jesus promised the apostles Hewould send the Spirit to them, He saidit would guide [them] into all truth(John 16:13).

Gods Spirit inspires a deeperunderstanding of His Word, purpose and will

As we read earlier, 1 Corinthians2:9-11 tells us: But as it is written, Eyehas not seen, nor ear heard, nor haveentered into the heart o man the thingswhich God has prepared or those who

love Him. But God has revealed themto us through His Spirit. For the Spiritsearches all things, yes, the deep thingso God. For what man knows the thingso a man except [by] the spirit o theman which is in him? Even so no oneknows the things o God except [by]the Spirit o God.

Without Gods Spirit a person cannotunderstand Gods divinely expressed

Word and will, or they are oolishness

to him; nor can he know them, becausethey are spiritually discerned (verse14).

The Spirit of God convicts ourconscience and helps us see sinas it really is

In speaking o the Holy Spirit, whichwould be given to His ollowers aferHis death and resurrection, Jesus said itwould convict the world o sin (John16:8). Gods Spirit within us, workingwith our conscience, helps us to recog-

nize and avoid sin. Te guilt we eel isreal when prompted by recognition osins.

The Holy Spirit produces godlyfruit in us

Just as an apple tree produces apples,Gods Spirit produces a particular typeo ruit in the lie o a Christian. Paullists the ruit that should be evidentin those who are led by Gods Spirit aslove, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, aithulness, gentleness

    and sel-control(Galatians 5:22-23,NIV).

Each aspect o thisruit is worthy oa detailed study initsel, coupled with asel-analysis to see to

what extent these traits are evident inour lives. (You can download our arti-cle reprint series on Te Fruit o theSpirit, which explores each o these indetail.)

Te apostle Peter sums up the pro-cess o growing to spiritual maturity:[Gods] divine power has given useverything we need or lie and god-liness through our knowledge o him

who called us by his own glory and

goodness. Trough these he has givenus his very great and precious promises,so that through them you maypartici-

pate inthe divine natureand escape thecorruption in the world caused by evildesires.

For this very reason, make everyeffort to add to your aith goodness;and to goodness, knowledge; andto knowledge, sel-control; and tosel-control, perseverance; and to per-severance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly

kindness, love. For i you possess thesequalities in increasing measure, theywill keep you rom being ineffectiveand unproductive in your knowledge oour Lord Jesus Christ.

But i anyone does not have them,he is nearsighted and blind, and hasorgotten that he has been cleansedrom his past sins. Tereore, my broth-ers, be all the more eager to make yourcalling and election sure. For i you dothese things, you will never all, andyou will receive a rich welcome into the

Just as an apple tree produces apples, GodsSpirit produces a particular type of fruit in thelife of a Christian. Each aspect of this fruit isworthy of a detailed study in itself

I God were a rinity, surely theapostle Paul, who recorded mucho the theological underpinningso the early Church, would haveunderstood and taught this under-standing. Yet we find no such con-cept in his writings.

Pauls standard greeting in his let-ters to churches, as well as individu-als to whom he wrote, is, Grace toyou and peace rom God the Fatherand the Lord Jesus Christ. Tere isno mention o the Holy Spirit.

    Tis same greeting, with onlyminor variations, appears in everyepistle that bears Pauls name:Romans 1:7; 1 Corinthians 1:3;2 Corinthians 1:2; Galatians 1:3;Ephesians 1:2; Philippians 1:2;Colossians 1:2; 1 Tessalonians1:1; 2 Tessalonians 1:2; 1 imothy1:2;2 imothy 1:2; itus 1:4; andPhilemon 3.

Te Holy Spirit is alwayslef outo these greetingsan unbelievableoversight i the Holy Spirit were

indeed a person coequal with Godand Jesus Christ.

Tis is even more surprisingwhen we consider that the church-es to which Paul wrote had manygentile members rom polytheisticbackgrounds who had ormerlyworshiped numerous gods. Paulsepistles record no attempt on hispart to explain the rinity or HolySpirit as a divine person equal withGod the Father and Jesus Christ.

In Pauls writings, only in 2Corinthians 13:14 is the Holy Spiritmentioned along with God theFather and Jesus Christ, and thereonly about our ellowship o theHoly Spirit (New InternationalVersion) with God and Christ (see1 John 1:3).

Te apostle Paul states clearly thatthere is one God, the Father, owhom are all things...and one LordJesus Christ... (1 Corinthians 8:6).He makes no mention o the HolySpirit as a divine person.

    Paul didnt acknowledge the Trinity

The Spirit of God alsocomforts, encourages andotherwise helps us

Jesus Christ promised to sendHis ollowers the Holy Spiritas a Helper (John 14:16) orComorter (King James Version).rue comort and reassurance come

rom Gods Spirit dwelling in us. Weneed not be unduly worried aboutwhat may happen to us. Gods Spiritgives us the assurance that whateverhappens will work out or the goodto those who love God, to thosewho are the called according to His

purpose (Romans 8:28).Tis assurance provides an out-

look on lie that is rare in our world.Yes, a Christian can get discouraged, but it is through the Holy Spiritthat we can begin to look at liedifferently. As noted earlier, peace isanother ruit o Gods Spirit in thelie o a Christian.

We see the wonderul truth ohow and why God works in ourlives to transorm usenabling usto obey Him and grow in His waywhile in this physical lie. His HolySpirit works in us that we may expe-rience an awe-inspiring transorma-

tion in the uture at Christs return.

Afer the martyrdom o Stephen, most o the Christians in Jerusalemfled the city in ear o Saul (who laterbecame the apostle Paul).

But the believers who had fledJerusalem went everywhere preach-ing the Good News about Jesus.Philip, or example, went to thecity o Samaria and told the peoplethere about the Messiah. Crowds lis-tened intently to what he had to saybecause o the miracles he did. Manyevil spirits were cast out, screamingas they lef their victims. And manywho had been paralyzed or lamewere healed. So there was great joy inthat city

But now the people believedPhilips message o Good News con-cerning the Kingdom o God andthe name o Jesus Christ. As a result, many men and women were bap-tized...

prophesied (Acts 19:5-6).Peter had preached that those who

repented and were baptized wouldreceive the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38). Butrom these examples, we see that the

Holy Spirit didnt come immediatelywhen a person was immersed in water, but came afer a minister o God put hishands on the person and prayed or theHoly Spirit to be given to him or her.

Te Bible gives us a clear answer.Paul came upon some believers in

Ephesus who had been baptizedby no less than John the Baptist.Yet they had not received the HolySpirit or two reasons. One is thatthey did not have the laying ono hands. Te other was that theyapparently did not ully understandthe Christian way o lie, the cove-nant into which one enters throughbaptism.

What did their baptism byJohn accomplish? Undoubtedly, ithelped prepare them or conver-sion, or he preached repentance. And it likely strengthened theirresolve to obey God. But the bap-

tism didnt bring about their con-version or result in their receivingthe Holy Spirit. Clearly, many ac-tors have to be in order or that totake place, including knowledge osin (the transgression o Gods law,1 John 3:4), an awareness o theneed or orgiveness, true repen-tance (turning rom sin to obedi-ence), aith toward God and Christand a clear understanding o theobligations o Christianity. In addi-tion, the baptism should, undernormal circumstances, be doneby a minister o Gods Church,

ollowed by the laying on o handsand prayer to receive the gif o the

Holy Spirit. You can read this encounter in

Acts 19:1-6, where you will see thatPaulafer counseling the believ-ersbaptized them again and laidhands on them.

Like baptism, the practice olaying on o hands has its histori-cal roots in the Old estament. Inancient times this practice, ofenaccompanied by anointing with oil,was used to set men apart to serveGod in the offices o king or priest. It was also sometimes invoked insetting apart sacrifices or otherthings or holy use. Similarly, laying

on o hands afer baptism signifiesthat the newly baptized person hasnow been set apart or God.

Since the days o the apostles, thelaying on o hands afer baptismhas signified the actual moment othe receiving o the Holy Spirit andthe setting apart o a convert asa child o God. It is only throughthe gif o Gods Spirit that we candevelop the godly attitude o obe-dience and aith. Te practice olaying on o hands or the receivingo Gods Spirit is mentioned inActs 8:17; 19:6; and 2 imothy 1:6.

Is the laying on of hands necessary

for us to receive the Holy Spirit?

they sent Peter and John there. As soonas they arrived, they prayed or thesenew Christians to receive the HolySpirit. Te Holy Spirit had not yet comeupon any o them, or they had onlybeen baptized in the name o the LordJesus. Ten Peter and John laid theirhands upon these believers, and theyreceived the Holy Spirit (Acts 8:4-8, 12,

14-17, New Living ranslation). We can see the process that the early

Christian Church established or newbelievers to receive the Holy Spirit. As aperson becomes convictedo the trutho the Bible and the need or Jesusatoning sacrifice, he or she also sees the

    need to become baptized.

Baptism is only part o the process, however. A baptized individual mustthen have hands laid on them by aminister o God, as made clear in theollowing passage:

...who, when they had come down, prayed or them that they might receivethe Holy Spirit. For as yet He hadallen upon none o them. Tey had

only been baptized inthe name o the LordJesus. Ten they laidhands on them, andthey received the HolySpirit (Acts 8:15-17).

    Notice that theseChristians had already

been baptized. But the Holy Spirit wasntgiven to them until the apostles laidhands on them.

When they heard this, they werebaptized in the name o the LordJesus. And when Paul had laid handson them, the Holy Spirit came upon

them, and they spoke with tongues and

As a person becomes convicted of the truthof the Bible and the need for Jesus atoningsacrifce, he or she also sees the need to

become baptized. They then have hands laidon them by a minister of God.

    Correctly understanding the scriptural truth

that the Holy Spirit is Gods power that can

transorm our lives helps us better under-

stand His purpose and will or us.

It is also a key to understanding the whole purposeand intent o the New Covenant. God did not estab-

lish the New Covenant to abolish His laws, which are

holy, just and good (Romans 7:12). He established it

to remedy the flaw that was in the people(Hebrews

8:8)the weakness, disobedience and lack o aith

inherent in all o us that leads us to sin (Romans 3:10-

18). Trough His Spirit, God empowers us to develop

holy, righteous character and resist temptation and the

    pulls to sin.

With Gods Spirit at work within us, Gods wonder-

ul promise o the New Covenant in Jeremiah 31:33-34can be ulfilled: I will put My law in their minds, and

write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and

they shall be My people. No more shall every man

teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying,

Know the L, or they all shall know Me, rom the

least o them to the greatest o them, says the L.

For I will orgive their iniquity, and their sin I willremember no more.

Receiving the Holy Spirit gives a Christian the spiri-

tual power needed to live a godly lie. It helps provide

the motivation and strength that make it possible or

us to be able to obey Gods commandments, make

    right choices, overcome and persevere (Romans 5:5;

    8:26; 12:2; Philippians 2:5; 2 Peter 1:3-4).

How great is our loving God and Father who has

made all things possible through His Son Jesus Christ!

(Matthew 19:26). His work within us is accomplished

through the greatest gif that could ever be made avail-able or human beings: the power, love and mind o

Christ through the Spirit o God at work in our lives.
