In the first three weeks, 30 individuals have attended the one-hour sessions. Their backgrounds range from some who were raised in a Christian family to those who never heard the good news of Jesus Christ and salvation. “These men are very appreciative to have a ministry come and show they care for their lives,” says Jim Duran, BSM Director. Currently, the focus of the study is “Choices,” involving Jesus’ teachings on the Kingdom of God. This has included the parables of The Sower and the Seed and The Wise and Foolish Builder. The parables provoke thoughtful discussion of how good and poor decisions have had an impact on the lives of each one in the room. “Jail ministry is such fertile ground for the gospel and more workers are needed,” added Jim. “Some of these men are discovering, for the first time, that their lives have a purpose and it is time to surrender to God’s great plan.” The outreach to the incarcerated is emblematic of the direction that BSM is forging for the future: in addition to our two- century-old mission of Bible distribution, we will foster Bible engagement. This means, along with shipping Bibles to chaplains who place them in the hands of inmates, we will encourage consistent reading and study of the Word. “We hope to work with Chaplain Jeff at CCJ and other chaplains to recruit more volunteers who are eager to share the Word with those who are ready to hear.” BSM Jail Ministry is Planting God’s Word into Needy Lives If you are interested in participating in our outreach to the incarcerated, and learn about training opportunities, please contact us at [email protected] or call 772-8566. 2015 Annual Meeting Friday, May 22, 6:00pm, Emmaus Lutheran Church, 265 Middle Rd., Falmouth Please join us to learn and celebrate how God has worked through the ministry of the Bible Society to touch lives in Maine and in Africa and to hear our plans for the future. Our Mission: To Place the Word of God into Hands, Minds, and Hearts APR/MAY 2015

Launched in mid-March, BSM’s new weekly Bible Study at the Cumberland County Jail in Portland is encouraging men to look to the One who can set them free from poor choices which have led them to a life of desperation and crime.

The parables provoke thoughtful discussion

of how good and poor decisions have had an impact on the lives of each one in the room.

“Jail ministry is such fertile ground for the gospel and more workers are needed,” added Jim. “Some of these men are discovering, for the first time, that their lives have a purpose and it is time to surrender to God’s great plan.”

The outreach to the incarcerated is emblematic of the direction that BSM is forging for the future: in addition to our two-century-old mission of Bible distribution, we will foster Bible engagement. This

means, along with shipping Bibles to chaplains who place them in the hands of inmates, we will encourage consistent reading and study of the Word.

“We hope to work with Chaplain Jeff at CCJ and other chaplains to recruit more volunteers who are eager to share the Word with those who are ready to hear.”

Bible Masters:Maine Challenge

Hebrews 4:12

At the Bible Society of Maine, we are in the process of planning for the 2015 Bible Masters: Maine Challenge to be held at Windham Assembly of God Ministries on Saturday, October 24, 9:00am- 3:30pm. Proceeds from the event will help us to serve ministries in Maine and beyond, including our ongoing "Light Up the World" outreach to Africa.

The setup of the Challenge is similar to a quiz show format. The variety of the questions will be exclusively focused on the four Gospels. We are working to register 18 teams of 3 players each (9 teams in the category of 18 years and younger, and 9 teams in the category of 19 years old and over).

Please contact us if you are interested in sponsoring a team or two from your church or para-church ministry.
