‘It wasn’t cricket!’As descriptions of GarfieldSobers’ history making six sixes

in one over go, it’s surprising. When the man giving thatdescription is the great WestIndian cricketer himself, it’sastonishing. But that was what he confidedto students of Ballakermeen andSt Ninian’s high schools when hegave a talk during a flying visitto the Isle of Man.For many cricket fans, the grainyblack and white images ofSobers hitting poor Glamorganbowler Malcolm Nash over theropes six times in one over, wayback in 1968, is the most iconicfootage the sport has. Sir Garfield, as he now is,

explained how, earlier in hiscareer, two West Indian greatsgave differing accounts to himas to the best way to bat.Everton Weekes argued that bykeeping the ball on the ground, you couldn’t be caught out.Learie Constantine, however, said that if you hit the ball outof the ground, the fielderscouldn’t catch the ball either!‘When I hit the six sixes,’ said SirGarfield. ‘I took LearieConstantine’s version of thegame because we wanted quickruns. It wasn’t cricket, but it wasa way of getting quick runs.’

He stressed that it was his teamNottinghamshire’s need to scorequickly that was the reasonbehind the history making, notany desire for any personalglory.

‘I have never, ever played forrecords. Always remember thatthe team comes first and anytime where there are twopeople playing in sport, youbecome a team and you playtogether.’

The legendary cricketer was inthe Isle of Man to attend adinner hosted by the Isle of ManSporting and Dining Club and

also to promote the Sir GarfieldSobers International SchoolsCricket Tournament – an annualevent staged in his nativeBarbados that has seen, amongothers, a young Alistair Cooktake part in previous years. He said he was hoping to see ateam from the Isle of Man at afuture event.Sir Garfield, 77, found the timeto talk to the Manx Advertiserand offered this advice toyoungsters wanting to succeedat cricket: ‘If they are interestedin the game they must practisethe right way and practise veryhard.‘Practice is very important in thedevelopment of your sport, notonly to improvetechnique but toimprove concentration.’During his talk, SirGarfield describedTwenty 20 cricket as‘entertainment’ ratherthan a genuine version ofthe sport; although headded it wasentertainment thathelped to fund the ‘real’game of Test cricket. He said he had no envy

of today’s top cricketers whorake in huge amounts by playingin the likes of the Indian PremierLeague, where the money onoffer is so great that someplayers have put taking part inthose tournaments ahead ofrepresenting their country.‘I have had my day,’ he told theManx Advertiser. ‘I would haveplayed in the IPL, but I wouldn’thave sacrificed playing for mycountry.’His repeated the message thatit was the achievements of theteam that mattered, not thoseof the individual. It’s an attitude that would serveus all well, not just on the fieldof sport, but away from it.

Your guide to survivingthe school holidaysThe time of year that parents dread

is almost upon us; yes, the school

summer holidays are about to start. Now, although in the UK EducationSecretary Michael Gove now seems hellbent on reducing the six week holiday,In the Isle of Man it remains for theforeseeable future. (By the way, howmany people think that Gove must havebeen picked on by a teacher when hewas at school, as he seems determinedto make their lives as difficult aspossible?)

So here are some tips to keep youryoung ones occupied in the long weeksahead.

Find them a job. It’s time they pulledsome weight, so help them get someseasonal work and if it keeps them outof your hair for the duration of theholidays, so much the better. Given theprospect of tuition fees looming overparents and children’s heads, no age forthis is too young. For instance, checkout how many homes in your localitystill use chimneys.

Organise a treasure hunt. Now youmust be careful to ensure thatorganising such a treasure hunt does

not create more work for you than justlooking after your children in the firstplace. So keep it simple. Give them aspade and tell them there’s hiddentreasure in the back garden. If you like, draw a map that directs them to thearea of lawn you were meaning to digup anyway.

Give them a research project. Forexample, get them to observe Queen’sPier for six weeks to see if any bits dropoff it.

Rely on the weather. If it’s sunny, children should be outdoors enjoyingthe fresh air, so encourage them tomake the most of the nice weather. Forthe remaining five weeks and six daysthey can play on their mobile phones.

Find some traditional pastimes. Forinstance, get someone to open up anarcade, give your child 50p and sendthem on their way.

Patronise them. Tell them how in yourday you always found something to doand were never bored. They’ll be so sickof hearing it, they’ll be out of your hairas soon as possible.

Coast exhibition of theSayle GalleryA new exhibition hasopened at the SayleGallery in Douglas, entitledCoast. The exhibition reflects the factthe Island has nearly 100 miles ofcoastline and brings nine artiststogether under one roof, each ofwhom has produced new workwhich interprets the theme intheir own unique way.

Chris Powles is exhibiting six newwatercolours which show alandscape in transition, with areasof detailed of texture, light andform playing against larger areastreated simply. There will be afirst chance for local art lovers tosee his painting Ramsey Pier, ToThe North which was selectedfrom over 1000 entries to appearin last year’s Sunday TimesWatercolour Competition finalexhibition.

For Win Norton, the show is acontinuous thread in her life: shegrew up by the sea, became amarine biologist, and now lives ina house overlooking the coast. She has new pieces on display;including Where is The Ice Going(pictured).

Bryony Harrison takes childhoodmemories of times on the beachand in the sea, and mixes themwith more adult concerns aboutthe fragility of life in the oceansand what she sees as a growinghuman disregard of the underseahabitats of animals, corals andplants.

Back on dry land, Bridgid Stowellconcentrates on the rocky shoresand coves of Port Skillian andMarine Drive in her familiar semi-abstract acrylic paintings.

Other artists taking part in Coast, which runs until July 21, are GillDyer, Charlotte Jane Henry, PaulParker and Rosi Robinson. TheSayle Gallery is at HarrisPromenade.

Can you dig it? (Yes we can!)Children from Kewaigue School were given thego ahead to get knee-deep in dirt by theirteachers. It wasn’t a case of a drop in standards for the year four and fivepupils, however, they were on an archaeological field trip to the siteof an Iron Age settlement just outside Castletown.

Kewaigue is one of a number of schools whose children are beingallowed to visit the site and observe the work of studentsworking with the Centre for Manx Studies’archaeological field school and training excavation atBallacagen, on farmland just a few minutes’ walkfrom Castletown.

The site was original excavated in the 1940s byGerhard Bersu, who was a well-known Germanarchaeologist who was interned in the Island duringWorld War Two.

A model of his interpretation of the settlement is ondisplay at the House of Manannan in Peel.

But, with the advancement of technology to help inthe study of ancient sites, it was decided to go back to Ballacagenand reassess his findings.

Community heritage officer with the Centre for Manx Studies, KatieKewley, explained: ‘We have come back to try to find his trenches,re-dig what he dug and work out whether he missed anything.’

Advances such as radiocarbon dating are already enabling greaterdepth to the research.

Finds have included a 2,000 year old glass bead, as well as moreanimal bones, which help give an idea of the diet of the settlers atBallacagen (which appears to be based on sheep, goats and cows).

It is also thought thesettlement may turn outto be larger than Bersuthought initially.

This is the secondsummer in whicharchaeology studentshave travelled to theIsland to take part in theresearch, which issponsored by ManxNational Heritage.

Partial excavations also took place lastsummer. While the new research confirmedmany of the findings by Bersu, it has alsothrown up a number of areas worthy offurther investigation.

Last week a number of schools were invitedto visit the dig and they all got to have a goat searching for artefacts in prepared trays, while different archaeologists explained thenature of the work taking place.

The Communications Commission isconsulting on its proposals on thelicensing of 4G mobile communicationsservices in the Island.Up to three licences can be issued.A spokesman for the commission said: ‘While2G mobile introduced customers to textsand emails from their phones, and 3Gsupported smartphones and data, 4G isideally suited for high-bandwidth dataservices, such as live TV or streaming highquality video.‘The introduction of 4G mobile technologiesshould result in better mobile data services, faster speeds and improved quality ofservice. Broadband delivered over 4G mobilenetworks could be as good as or, in somecircumstances, even better than broadbanddelivered over the fixed network.’The commission is proposing that successfulapplicants will have the following conditionsincluded in their Telecommunications Actlicence to provide 4G services: • launch commercial services within nine

months of licence award; • provide at least 33 per cent population

coverage at launch; • provide at least 95 per cent population

coverage within two years of servicelaunch;

• offer minimum download speeds of atleast 5 Mbps over their networks.

Operators would need to have aTelecommunications Act licence issued in theIsle of Man, which allows it to offer mobileservices on the Island, and a WirelessTelegraphy Act licence issued by Ofcom inthe UK, which allows it to use specifiedspectrum bands. After the one-month consultation thecommission will consider responses andinvite expressions of interest from potentialoperators. Commission chairman Juan Watterson said:‘The Isle of Man is a dynamic economy withfirst class telecommunications networks.‘We hope that early delivery of 4G to theIsland will add to our offering and make usan even more attractive prospect for a widevariety of businesses. For retail customers, the prospect of live streaming news andvideo will mean a step change in digitalinclusion and add to the Island’s alreadyadvanced quality of life.’Responses should be received by August 1.Responses in writing should be marked ‘4GConsultation’ and either posted to theCommunications Commission at 2nd Floor,St Andrew’s House, Douglas, Isle of Man,IM1 2PX; or emailed to [email protected] consultation documents can be viewedonline athttp://www.gov.im/cc/ConsultationDetail.gov?id=386
