At BHC, it’s still construction season. Johnson Wilson’s team and subcontractors have been battling the subzero temperatures and snowfalls to forge ahead to complete the 48-unit small house by July. With much of the concrete block and steel placed, it’s shaping up to be a very large building that will make quite an impact on this campus. This building will afford our community’s elders the opportunity to live in a home that is not an efficient business, but rather offers the true elements of home: a kitchen to hear coffee brewing and smell banana bread baking, friends gathered to share a meal and reminisce, inspiring and assisting one another; all while receiving the medical care and personal assistance needed to enjoy the sunset of life. With the construction in full swing, the Sisters have chosen a name for the new building. Joining Sister Lois Eckes, OSB, Prioress, and the Benedictine Sisters of St. Scholastica, I’m pleased to inform you that the Sisters chose to name the new building Marywood. Sister Lois states, “Mary means ‘living fragrance.’ Our prayer is that Marywood will be filled with the living fragrance of Christ’s gracious love and compassion extended to all who will live and work there.” Thank you to our Sponsors for the very generous gifts you continue to give us, including this beautiful name. Marywood not only provides another option on our campus, but it also allows BHC the ability to renovate the current skilled nursing facility (nursing home) that the Sisters had built in 1980. Renovation plans are set to begin as soon as Marywood is completed, moving a number of residents (that wish for the this setting) over, making room for renovations to occur. We’ll start after the ground thaws on the 4,000 square foot therapy addition that will be located on the backside of the BHC, creating a connection right to the newly renovated transitional care, or rehabilitation, wing. After residents are moved, we’ll begin with the renovation of the wing that will become our new secured memory care unit, Safe Harbor. The new Safe Harbor will have 14 private rooms and features their own living and dining room space, with their own kitchen. Our aim is to provide the most familiar, comfortable living environment possible for our folks requiring dementia care. Continued on Page 2 Artist Rendering of Safe Harbor’s living room.

BHC Campus Projects Updates Many warm greetings to you as we continue the winter season! At BHC, it’s still construction season. Multiple Sclerosis Achievement Center (MSAC)

The Multiple Sclerosis Achievement Center (MSAC) at Benedictine Health Center is an expansion of the Adult Day Service program at BHC. The program in its second year of operation serving over 20 individuals with MS in the greater Duluth area. The MSAC program operates in partnership with the Upper Midwest MS Society and the National MS Society and is focused on member’s physical, social, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual health. Pictured are members of MSAC that made special fleece blankets for the pediatric patients at St. Mary’s Children’s Hospital at Christmas. Heidi Jusula, Child Life Specialist at St. Mary’s writes, “The beautiful and cozy blankets will brighten the children’s rooms; thank you for thinking of the kids!”

For more information about the MS Achievement Center at BHC, please contact Jarod Champeaux at 218-733-2254.

Once Safe Harbor is complete, renovations will begin on the rest of 2nd floor (one wing at a time) to create our new transitional care, where community members receive the best nursing and therapy services in town, providing rehabilitation and care coordination in a professional, comfortable environment. Post-renovation, we’ll have 30 private rooms with private bathrooms and showers. Again, the state-of-the-art therapy space provides easy access right down the hall, and you’ll enjoy an enhanced dining experience during your stay.

Once 2nd floor is complete, Johnson Wilson will move to the first floor to renovate the front entrance to allow for a warm, inviting

“welcome” to our building and create a beautiful, enlarged chapel and community area in the current therapy space. This relocation of the chapel allows us to use the first floor as a “public floor,” thus providing our 2nd and 3rd floors with quiet, less-trafficked environments.

I’m certainly proud of the progress on campus to date. 2014 is a big year for the Benedictine Health Center and I’m thankful for the un-wavering support of the Benedictine Sisters of St. Scholastica, Benedictine Health System, the BHC Board, our generous donors, employees, volunteers, residents and families.

Blessing and warm wishes to all – spring is right around the corner!

Resident Spotlight

Westwood Residents, Cal and Ola Jean Haworth Cal and Ola Jean Haworth live in one of our independent apartments at Westwood. Prior to moving into Westwood, Cal and Ola Jean lived on Fredenberg Lake, just north of Duluth. After living on the lake for 32 years and maintaining their large property they decided to give it up for an easier life. Cal and Ola Jean have lived at Westwood for over 7 years and their vibrant energy is appreciated by residents and staff alike. They serve on the welcoming committee which helps new residents adjust to living at Westwood. When asked why they chose to move to Westwood they stated “for easy living, but we did not want to give up an active lifestyle.” Cal and Ola Jean have been married for 66 years and have 3 children, 9 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren.

Cal retired after 25 years of managing commercial radio and television stations. Cal and Ola Jean also owned and operated their own restaurant; “Somebody’s House” in the Mt. Royal area. Cal served on several boards of directors one of which established the MADD organization in St. Louis County and in the state of MN. Ola Jean was a homemaker, mother and teacher in Special Education at Ordean. Westwood is delighted to have Cal and Ola Jean with us.

Resident Spotlight

Benedictine Health Center Resident, Jane Huima The Benedictine Health Center is proud to feature Jane Huima for this edition of the Benedictine Beacon. Jane is a resident on our 2nd floor where she has resided since July 2012. Jane was first introduced to our campus in 2011 when she moved into Westwood Assisted Living. Jane says that she “Loves everything and everyone” here at BHC. She loves attending activities here, especially music programs and bingo. Jane is a very positive and happy person. Her advice is to “be involved and be positive because it takes too much effort to be crabby.” We are very fortunate to be able to witness Jane’s positive outlook on life on a daily basis. The Benedictine Health Center definitely benefits from having such a wonderful, positive woman on our campus.

Benedictine Health System Welcomes New President/CEO

Our parent company, the Benedictine Health System’s Board of Directors recently named Rocklon B. “Rocky” Chapin, FACHE, as President/CEO effective January 1, 2014. Rocky brings a balance of skills and experience that will move BHS into the fu-ture. His deep knowledge of acute care is valuable to BHS’ strategy of providing post-acute care with our hospital partners, and his vision for new care models will be helpful in shaping BHS. Rocky joined the BHS in January 2013 and recently served as senior vice presi-dent, business development and strategic planning. He has been a leader in the management and health care industry for more than 35 years. Prior to his appointment at BHS, he was the executive vice president and senior officer of Essentia Health’s (Duluth, MN) hospital division where he was instrumental in setting overall strategy for their system. The Benedictine Health System and Benedictine Health Center welcome Rocky as the new CEO of BHS.

The Benedictine Preschool had a visit from a Superior Police Officer during “Career Day.”
