In our endeavor of serving the needy, a greater thrust was given to the community health
initiatives by the hospital as a pro- active step for positive health.
Since 2005, we have been conducting various community outreach activities by
understanding the healthcare needs of the rural and tribal society. We focus on various
rural & tribal areas of Thane district in Maharashtra and our programs & projects are
mentioned as below: -
Details of Community Health Initiatives
1) Eye Care
As per WHO report, Cataract is the root cause of blindness around the world with 51% of
blindness being caused by cataract alone. However, in India, it is expected that
approximately 54 million people from the age group 50
years and above in the rural as well as in the urban
areas will be affected by cataract by the year 2020. We
have taken the responsibility to work towards Vision:
2020 objectives of WHO to eradicate needless
blindness.
Considering the magnitude of the problem in and
around Thane & western suburbs of Mumbai, we
conduct the following activities: -
• Free & concessional treatment to the needy.
• Awareness campaigns & education.
• Free food, accommodation& transport facilities to
the patients.
Since 2007, we have screened appx. 1,70,000 people & operated about 35,000
patients.
2) Cancer Care
As per American Cancer Society (ACS) report, 1 in 4 men and 1 in 3 women would be
affected by cancer internationally in the future and it is
projected that 20 million new cases would arise each
year making cancer as the No. 1 killer around the world
by 2020. Lack of awareness, non-availability of timely
treatment & unaffordability has been cited as the major
bottlenecks in providing quality cancer care to the
patients around the world. India is no exception to this
either.
Hence, in our mission to fight cancer in the society & tackle the aforesaid issues in an
organized manner, we at Bhaktivedanta Hospital& Research Institute conduct the following
activities: -
• Cancer screening camps across locations in
Maharashtra & UP.
• Cancer awareness, educations & seminars
• Free & concessional treatm

3) Cardiac Care
Heart disease is not just an emerging problem anymore but it has already emerged as a
major cause of deaths amongst people in India as
well as abroad. As per recent estimates, of the 9.5
million deaths occurring globally, 1 in 6 die due to
cardiovascular diseases and it is fast emerging as
the largest killer in India in males as well as in
females. The demanding life style, high pressure
professional situations and personal commitments
contribute to the increase in stress levels and as a
result escalating the occurrence of heart diseases. It
is however expected that by 2020, 60% of heart diseases are expected to occur in India
alone.
Hence, Bhaktivedanta Hospital
services focuses on the following
• Preventive & curative cardiac care & treatment.
• Cardiac camps across various locations to identify heart disorders in men & women.
• Regular awareness campaigns & educative seminars
• Free & concessional treatment to the needy

In the recent past 2 years, we have performed appx. 1500
angiographies and 350 angioplasties to the needy. We expect a
growing need for such services considering the increase in the
number of cases in cardiovascular diseases.
4) Hospice & Palliative Care
The word Hospice is derived from the Latin word “Hopitium”
meaning a guesthouse. Hospice & Palliative Care are
interchangeably used in India. It implies providing a helping hand to
the patients who are terminally ill.
Approximately 20 million globally & about 1 million in India would
require palliative care treatment and the number is only expected to
rise each passing year for people needing this treatment. The fast changing social scenario
leading to fragmented & nuclear families has brought in the growing need for provision of
profession Hospice & Palliative Care treatment.
Our mission at Bhaktivedanta Hospital& Research Institute has been to understand the
emotional needs during grief & trauma of the terminally ill patients who are in their final
stages of their lives. These patients who are totally shattered medically, physically,
emotionally, economically and spiritually, receive this care free of
cost, irrespective of their religious faiths & beliefs.
We offer them: -
• Emotional & psychological support.
• Bereavement care & consolation to the family members of
the deceased.
• Spiritual counseling which heals the body, mind & the soul.
• Home care & one-to-one counseling services to the
individuals.
These kinds of services help patients remain strong in grief of the loss of near and dear
ones in their family & help them combat various psychological& emotional disorders with a
positive mindset.
Our 'Department of Palliative Care' at Bhaktivedanta Hospital & Research Institute treats
nearly 200 such patients annually for palliative care. Considering the logistics involved in
reaching out to home care patients in distant locations, we plan to expand the
'Telemedicine' services rapidly in the future for the same.
5) Kidney Care & Dialysis
Chronic kidney disorder is a economic catastrophe, social
calamity & a global public health problem. In the year 2000, US
alone had 30 million people diagnosed with chronic kidney
diseases while India required 2.5 crore kidney transplant or dialysis treatment and the
number is only expected to increase in years to come glo

6) Senior Citizens Camps
As per recent reports geriatric population in India who are above
50 years of age is expected to touch to 10% by 2030 and India
would be the only second country after China to have the
world's largest geriatric population around the world. Moreover, they face economic,
medical & emotional issues as well.
General medical problems in geriatric population include:
• Hypertension
• Bronchial asthma
• Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)
• Skin infections
• Insomnia
• Piles
