Living in halls of residence Now that you have decided to study at the Arts University Bournemouth you will want to consider where to live. This guide will provide you with information about our new BH1 Madeira Road halls of residence to help you make this decision. Living in halls of residence is an easy way to make new friends and get to know fellow students from a range of different courses. Halls can be great fun and a simple way of sorting out your accommodation for the start of your studies. Living in halls of residence can be a vibrant, dynamic experience, with the opportunity to share with, and learn from, fellow students from across the world. You have the chance to meet people from different backgrounds, with different outlooks on life. All students play an important part in creating a friendly, welcoming and safe environment which counts as home to all halls residents. However, with up to 220 students in each block, Madeira Road Halls will not necessarily be the most peaceful environment, and this form of communal living doesn't suit everyone. We can't guarantee that you'll get on with your flatmates, and sharing a kitchen and lounge facilities in a cluster flat calls for compromise from all flatmates. Don't forget that you have the alternative option of moving into private rented accommodation - visit aub.ac.uk for more information.

What's in the local area? Madeira Road halls of residence are located close to the Lansdowne area in Bournemouth town centre. Bournemouth town centre has a pedestrianised high street with a range of department stores, brand name stores, and independent stores, with an excellent range of cafes and coffee shops. Bournemouth is renowned for its vibrant atmosphere and nightlife, and offers everything from the latest theatre productions to traditional pubs, jazz bars and nightclubs. And of course, don't forget the beach - 7 miles of golden sand and award-winning beaches are within easy reach. Travel to the AUB campus (approximately 2.5 miles away) takes approximately 15 minutes by bus or cycling. The BusforBU service costs £10.00 for a ten-journey ticket. Although you'll have a little further to travel to campus in the morning, being based in the town centre is great for your social life and leisure activities, and you'll save on the cost of taxi fares after an evening out.

Important stuff you should know BH1 Madeira Road halls of residence are for first year prepHE and undergraduate students. All rooms are single occupancy. The rent for rooms in Madeira Road halls is £130.00 per week for single en suite rooms, and £145.00 per week for a self-contained studio. Rent is payable termly in 3 instalments at the beginning of each term. In addition to your rent you will also need to pay a deposit of £460.00 to secure your room. This will be returned to you at the end of the tenancy, minus any deductions for damages or fines. AUB operates a system of collective responsibility so you may be charged for damage to communal areas, in addition to any damage within your room. The tenancy agreement starts on 1 September 2015 for foundation students, and on 7 September 2015 for undergradute students. Tenancies end on 4 June 2016. You cannot end your tenancy early unless you find another student to take your place. Tenancies are continuous - there is no need to vacate your room during vacation times. You will need to provide a guarantor (usually a relative) who can confirm tht they will be responsible for the rent and any additional costs (e.g. damages) in the event that these are not paid. If you are under the age of 18 when you move into halls, you will need to provide parental permission. Please note that the University does not act in loco parentis for students under the age of 18.

How to apply for a place in halls of residence Applications for a place in halls of residence open in early March. You must have firmly accepted your offer to study at AUB, and will receive a message in your applicant portal to let you know that applications are open. The deadline for applications is Friday 29 May 2015. To apply for halls, please complete all sections of the on-line application. If you are a care leaver or have a disability, please tell us about this in your application. We will prioritise applications from these students, but you will be asked to provide some form of evidence in support of your application (for example, a medical report or letter from your social worker). You can select a number of choices when making your application. Please note that not all choices are available to all students. Whilst we will do our best to allocate your choice of halls and room type, this is not always possible. Rooms are allocated at the start of June and, if you are successful in gaining a place, you will receive an email asking you to check the application website for details of your allocation.
