    AUTOMOTIVE

An automobile, autocar, motor car or car is a wheeled motor vehicle used for transporting passengers,

which also carries its own engine or motor. Most definitions of the term specify that automobiles are

designed to run primarily on roads, to have seating for people, to typically have four wheels, and to be

constructed principally for the transport of people.

ENGINE Internal combustion engines are most commonly used for mobile propulsion in vehiclesand portable machinery. In mobile equipment, internal combustion is advantageous sinceit can provide high power-to-weight ratios together with excellent fuel energy density.Generally using fossil fuel (mainly petroleum), these engines have appeared in transportin almost all vehicles (automobiles, trucks, motorcycles, boats, and in a wide variety ofaircraft and locomotives).

The picture shown is of a center distance-checking fixture used to measure a distance between

a bore and a shaft of 2 wheeler crank. High & Low master is used to set the gauge initially and

then the operator just has to load the job on the fixture and the center distance is indicated on

the electronic readout. The inter connection of jets is done in such a way that variation in either

ID or OD does not affect the center distance.

  • A camshaft is a shaft to which a cam is fastened or of which a cam forms an integral part.In internal combustion engines with pistons, the camshaft is used to operate poppet valves. It thenconsists of a cylindrical rod running the length of the cylinder bank with a number of oblong lobesprotruding from it, one for each valve. The cam lobes force the valves open by pressing on the valve,or on some intermediate mechanism as they rotate. in four stroke engine valves are opened by "camshaft"

  • In an internal combustion engine, the cylinder head (often informally abbreviated to just head) sitsabove the cylinders on top of the cylinder block. It closes in the top of the cylinder, forming thecombustion chamber. This joint is sealed by a head gasket. In most engines, the head also providesspace for the passages that feed air and fuel to the cylinder, and that allow the exhaust to escape. The head can also be a place to mount the valves, spark plugs, and fuel injectors.

    CYLINDER BLOCK LINER

A cylinder liner is a cylindrical part to be fitted into an engine block to form a cylinder. It is one of themost important functional parts to make up the interior of an engine. The cylinder liner, serving asthe inner wall of a cylinder, forms a sliding surface for the piston rings while retaining the lubricant within. The most important function of cylinder liners is the excellent characteristic as sliding surface

  • Flywheel

A flywheel is a rotating mechanical device that is used to store rotational energy. Flywheels have a significantmoment of inertia and thus resist changes in rotational speed. The amount of energy stored in a flywheel isproportional to the square of its rotational speed. Energy is transferred to a flywheel by applying torque to it,thereby increasing its rotational speed, and hence its stored energy. Conversely, a flywheel releases storedenergy by applying torque to a mechanical load, thereby decreasing its rotational speed.

  • OUTPUT SHAFT

An output shaft is the part coming out of an engine that operates the accessories or transmits the engine's power. This output shaft can drive the transmission or the alternator. Typically, an output shaft is terminology used in smallengines or farm machinery. Any type of engine that produces power will ultimately have an output shaft.

  • BREAK

A friction brake is a type of automotive brake that slows or stops a vehicle by converting kinetic energyinto heat energy, via friction. The heat energy is then dissipated into the atmosphere. A bearing is a machine element that constrains relative motion between moving parts to only thedesired motion. The design of the bearing may, for example, provide for free linear movement ofthe moving part or for free rotation around a fixed axis; or, it may prevent a motion by controllingthe vectors of normal forces that bear on the moving parts. Bearings are classified broadly accordingto the type of operation, the motions allowed, or to the directions of the loads (forces) applied to the parts

    BEARINGS

    Shell Bearing

In a shell bearing, there is a flat steel strip on which a sheet made from bearing material is bonded. The entire assembly is formed into half round or full round shapes. The important parameter is theshell thickness which is controlled by taking a cut on an internal diameter

Consumer durable is a good that does not quickly wear out,or more specifically, one that yields utility over time ratherthan being completely consumed in one use. Highly durablegoods such as refrigerators, cars, or mobile phones usuallycontinue to be useful for three or more years of use, so durablegoods are typically characterized by long periods betweensuccessive purchases.

VALVE SEATThe valve seat in an internal combustion gasoline or diesel engine is the surface against which an intake or an exhaustvalve rests during the portion of the engine operating cycle when that valve is closed. The valve seat is a critical componentof an engine in that if it is improperly positioned, oriented, or formed during manufacture, valve leakage will occur which willadversely affect the engine compression ratio and therefore the engine efficiency, performance (horsepower), exhaustemissions, and engine life.

  • OTHER INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS

    Flatness Measurement

Many part designs contain surfaces that need to be uniform. In GD&T flatness tolerance definesa zone between two parallel planes within which a surface must lie. Since flatness is applied to anindividual surface, this tolerance does not need to be related to a datum. Flatness is usually used ona surface associated with a size dimension, acting as a refinement to the size requirement to ensureproper function of a part, or to promote even wear. Flatness tolerance applies in all drawing views, not just the view showing the tolerance callout.

    B-04-01.jpg

    Parameters:Flatness of the surface

    B-04-04.jpg

Salient Features:To check flatness of a surface of small parts

like valve plates used in refrigeration and

industrial hydraulics. This fixture is supplied

in three table sizes diameter 150, 200 and 250 mm.

The top surface of the table is ground to a high degree

of flatness. Depending on the specific requirement,

surface of the table can be lined with carbide strips to

render more wear resistance. At the center of the table,

an electronic probe is fitted with tip of the probe

protruding outside. When a component whose flatness

is to be measured is slowly moved over the probe contact,

variation in the readings is recorded, which is flatness.
