With spring around the corner, 24 residentgardeners at two of Pacica Housings apart-ment complexes have signed up for Pacicas com-munity garden program and are planning theirplots for this season. The Growing our Gardens,Growing Ourselves program is a community gar-den initiative which helps residents live healthier, more stable lives and build a sense of communityand inclusion.

Pacica Housing successfully piloted the pro-gram at a family housing complex in 2009 andexpanded the project to include Waterview apart-ments, a 49 unit housing complex for formerlyhomeless and homeless at risk Victoria residents,in 2010. It was the rst time gardening for many ofthe Waterview tenants and 10 of the initial 12 par-ticipants, along with 2 new gardeners, are lookingforward to growing their own herbs and vegetablesagain this season.

Support from numerous local businesses andfunding from the City of Victoria, Vancity CreditUnion, the Victoria Foundation and the VictoriaBranch of Investors Group, will allow for an ad-ditional community garden at a second supportedhousing complex, Medewiwin apartments, thisyear. Karyn French, executive director of PacicaHousing, is thrilled with the programs growth. We are excited to be expanding our communitygardens for a third year in a row says French,These gardening projects provide nutritional andtherapeutic value as well as foster a greater senseof community.

Tenants at Medewiwin, along with garden coor-dinator, David Stott, began building their gardensin March. As coordinator for both gardening proj-ects this year, Stott will be encouraging the moreexperienced gardeners to share what they knowabout gardening with their peers and others intheir buildings.

Pacica Housing is a non-prot charitable or-ganization, incorporated in 1988. Its mission is toprovide innovative, affordable housing opportuni-

ties and support to people in need of such services.Pacica Housing further provides advocacy andreferral services for those who need it through theDowntown Outreach Services ofce.

Staying physically active and exercising regu-larly can help prevent or delay some diseasesand disabilities as people grow older. Older peoplehave much to gain from staying active.

Here are some of the key benets to leading anactive lifestyle:

    Maintains muscle strength

Strengthens bones; slows down the processof osteoporosis

Keeps joints, tendons and ligaments moreexible, making it easier to move around

    Increases energy

    Strengthens heart and lungs

Promotes a sense of well-beingYou dont need a gym to exercise. Walking, gar-

dening, and household chores are all physical ac-tivities that keep you moving, active and t. Justbe sure to consult with your physician before be-ginning any exercise program.

While fear of falling often leads to a cut back inphysical activity, you should do just the opposite!Talk to your healthcare provider about your con-cerns so they can help you to overcome your fearand reduce your risk.

While keeping active helps, you should also beprepared in the event you have a fall. How would
