HEAD OF SCHOOL AND BOARD CHAIR MESSAGE

Battle Ground Academy’s annual report reflects the institutional loyalty and commitment of many stakeholders in creating and sustaining an extraordinary experience for our students. Our fundraising goals in capital, annual fund, and planned gifts support these efforts to continue to provide our students and faculty with the tools they need to foster success inside and outside of the classroom. We continue to review and improve our business model in order to ensure that we are good stewards of our resources. We are especially mindful of the sacrifices our families make in light of the fragile economy and the sense of uncertainty in the larger world.

We frequently refer to BGA as a community and a family. This wonderful community consists of caring parent volunteers who partner with dedicated and inspiring faculty, coaches, and administrators for the benefit of our students. The frequent contact among students and faculty and staff ensures not only a warm and caring environment but also the development of lasting, trusting relationships.

This year was our first to inhabit the Mary Campbell Visual Arts Center, and by spring 2012, we were able to occupy the first floor of the Athletic and Wellness Center. These recent capital projects promise to enhance in significant ways those experiences for future generations of students.

Our Annual Fund target is one of the tangible ways that these goals are achieved. This report demonstrates the commitments the BGA community has made to those efforts; however, we will seek to broaden our support in the years to come. The gifts that BGA receives from parents, friends, and alumni flow from those interactions and the extraordinary opportunities that our students have.

Thanks to each of you who have contributed time or money to make BGA the great school that it is and the premier school that it aspires to be. Your financial contributions and your investment of time and talent assist our faculty and staff in offering what we believe is an extraordinary experience for our students.

It is no secret that BGA’s greatness is built upon your loyalty and belief in the School’s ability to prepare our students for an exciting future. We appreciate the philanthropy and dedication of the BGA family.

FINANCIAL SUMMARY

As everyone is aware, we continue to live in challenging economic times. In harmony with financial stewardship and integrity, your contribution to the Annual Fund allowed BGA to thrive, even during these difficult times. During the 2011-2012 school year, Battle Ground Academy’s finances remained strong. With your support, we were able to sustain and enhance the experience that BGA offered its students.

Listed below are just a few examples of how your 2011-2012 contribution made a difference:

• Awarded financial assistance to worthy students.

• Enhanced classroom instruction by providing professional development opportunities for many faculty members.

• Launched a new technology initiative that not only significantly increased the wireless capabilities of both campuses, it dramatically increased student access to technology and enhanced the educational experience of the students and faculty at all three divisions.

• Provided funding to several much needed campus improvements, including paving of parking lots, painting of exterior doors, new basketball backboards, and added exterior lighting behind the Cherry Sports Center.

Battle Ground Academy has a particularly strong sense of community, where each and every individual makes a difference. Giving to Battle Ground Academy reflects that same sense of community. Every donor makes a difference to the experience of a child.

ANNUAL FUND LEADERSHIP TEAM 2011-2012 ANNUAL FUND TOTAL GIVING 2011-2012

The Annual Fund, as it states, is a campaign that is conducted every year and includes only those gifts that are 1) given in response to an Annual Fund request; 2) used entirely in the current academic year; and 3) enhance the operating budget beyond tuition.

Memorial gifts are added to the School’s endowment fund, whose interest supports BGA in perpetuity. Gifts in kind are attributed to the Annual Fund only if they offset operating expenses (i.e., were scheduled operating items for the current year). Other gifts that may benefit our students but which are not Annual Fund are considered either capital gifts or, if related to One School. One Vision., are considered capital campaign gifts.

We sincerely appreciate the generosity of those who make unrestricted gifts to the BGA Annual Fund as it supports current operations and remains the school’s priority for charitable gifts. These gifts are go work immediately to support the work going on at our campuses.

The BGA Annual Fund remains the school’s priority for charitable gifts and we thank all of the parents, faculty and staff, alumni, grandparents and friends of the School who help make a difference.

BGA is very fortunate to have many constituencies, past and present, who understand the importance of participating in the Annual Fund. Highlighted below are the percentages of giving participation from supporters of BGA.

Athletic & Wellness centerThe second floor of the

Athletic & Wellness Center will include 200 student athlete lockers for football, as well as girls’ and boys’ soccer, track and field. This space, once complete, will also be home to a training room, coaches’ offices and locker rooms, and meeting space.

The first floor of the A&W is already busy with activity in the weight room, on the 4-lane speed track and on the indoor turf. Approximately 425-450 Middle and Upper School students will use the A&W weekly as part of PE/fitness and wellness.

Funds In Support of Student Financial Aid

Jenny Ruth Corn Financial Aid Trust Fund Established through a bequest by Jenny Ruth Corn. Ms. Corn established this fund to “provide financial aid to deserving students.”

Virginia O. Claybrooke Trust Fund Established through a bequest by Virginia O. Claybrooke. Proceeds are to be used as tuition assistance for deserving BGA students.

Battle Rodes 1919 Financial Aid Fund Established through a bequest by Battle Rodes, a former student from the Class of 1919 and a Board of Trustee Member. Income from Fund to be used for tuition assistance for Williamson County students.

BGA Alumni Financial Aid Fund Established in 1995 by the Alumni Association to provide financial aid for deserving students who are alumni legacies.

Joe Pinkerton 1929 Financial Aid Fund Established in 1975 by family and friends in memory of Joe Pinkerton, Class of 1929. Mr. Pinkerton served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for many years and served the Williamson County banking community for many years. Annual financial aid is to be awarded to students who exemplify the high standards of character and service modeled by Mr. Pinkerton.

James A. Britt 1926 Memorial Fund Established in 1997 from the estate of James A. Britt, Class of 1926. Proceeds are to be used as tuition assistance for deserving BGA students.

Dr. Felix A. Fly 1968 Financial Aid Fund Established in 1992 by family, classmates, and friends. Dr. Fly served as Student Body President and was acknowledged by his peers for his compassion and concern for others. Dr. Fly died in 1991. The fund provides financial aid for deserving students at Battle Ground Academy.

William H. Smith 1971 Memorial Scholarship Fund Established in 1998 by classmates, friends and family. As an endowed fund, this permanent resource will provide annual financial aid to students who represent the high personal standards and focus on personal achievement exemplified by Bill Smith, Class of 1971.

James H. Akin 1938 Financial Aid Fund Established in 1999 by the James H. Akin family to honor James H. Akin, Class of 1938, and to remember with gratitude the impact Headmaster George H. Briggs and the BGA faculty had on Jimmy Akin’s life. Mr. Akin is the second of four generations that have attended BGA. He is a native of Williamson County. This fund will provide financial aid to deserving students.

ENDOWMENT FUNDS AND AWARDS

A strong, growing endowment is an essential resource to overall excellence. BGA must have a solid financial base, unchallenged by the unpredictable ups and downs of year-to-year changes to staff, enrollment, and economic cycles.

Many of the following funds were established years ago; some are added through annual contributions; others would welcome additional support to strengthen their impact. Annually, interest generated from each endowment provides funding for student or faculty support in that academic year.

Jennie Fleming Mizell 1921 Financial Aid Fund Mickie Fleming Farrar 1923 Financial Aid Fund Samuel Milton Fleming 1924 Financial Aid Fund The Fleming Scholar Program was set up by members of the Fleming family to memorialize Jennie Fleming Mizell, Class of 1921; Mickie Fleming Farrar, Class of 1923; and Samuel Milton Fleming, Class of 1924. For a student to be named a Fleming Scholar, he/she must live in Williamson County, be a conscientious and successful academic student, while maintaining the highest standard of honor and integrity.

C.K. McLemore 1939 Memorial Scholarship Fund This fund was established in April 2004 by William R. “Pete” Mefford, BGA Class of 1958 and his wife, Lyn, and is named for Mr. Mefford’s uncle, Clairborne Kinnard (C.K.) McLemore, Class of 1939. This scholarship is awarded to a deserving student who demonstrates an excellent academic record and strong citizenship. C.K. cared greatly for his family, but he also had high expectations of them. He delighted in helping others but often did so anonymously and with little fanfare. It was his generosity that both inspired and allowed for the provision of this scholarship. It is the hope that one day the recipients of this scholarship will have the opportunity to pass that generosity on.

Marylou Brown Scholarship Fund This fund is in memory of Marylou Brown, an administrative assistant in the middle school, who passed away in the spring of 2005. Mrs. Brown brought enthusiasm with her smile to anyone visiting the office. The family has established a scholarship in her memory to benefit a middle school faculty or staff child. The scholarship will be made available during the child’s tenure in the middle school. The student selected will embody similar qualities to those of Mrs. Brown.

The Class of 1975 Scholarship Fund This fund was established in January 2006 by an anonymous member of the Class of 1975 to provide scholarship funds for worthy students.

The Michael I. Mott 1967 Scholarship Fund This fund was in established in November 2005 following Mike’s death. The scholarship is awarded to a deserving student who demonstrates the principles by which Mike Mott lived. These are the same principles which guide all students at BGA: character, scholarship, and excellence. Mike Mott was a member of the Class of 1967. He graduated from Vanderbilt University and the University of Southern California. He retired from the Marine Corps in 1991 having

served twenty years and reaching the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Following his career in the Marine Corps, Mike served as Deputy Administrator of NASA. At the time of his death Mike was Vice President of NASA Systems for Boeing Aerospace and was responsible for the strategic direction of Boeing’s civil space programs. This fund was created by the Mott Family to honor his memory and to support the mission of Battle Ground Academy.

Class of 1958 Scholarship Fund This fund was established in June 2006 by the Class of 1958 to celebrate their 50th reunion and to challenge future 50 year classes to establish endowed funds.

Joan and John Moran Endowed Scholarship Fund This fund was established to honor Joan and John Moran. It will provide scholarship opportunities for students who might not otherwise have an opportunity to experience the kind of great college preparatory program provided at BGA, and to extol the virtues of character, integrity, and loyalty lived by the Morans.

Arvilla R. House / Jewell Family Scholarship Fund This fund was established in the fall of 2007 by the Jewell family in memory of Ms. Arvilla R. House and the ideals of character and kindness which she exhibited to all.

Funds In Support of Faculty

James B. Akin 1926 Endowment Fund Established in 1975 by family, friends and former students for faculty professional enrichment. A 1926 graduate of BGA, Mr. Akin exemplified high character, profound honesty and respect. He served on the BGA faculty for 32 years and coached all the sports at BGA for several years. He taught Chemistry and Bible. His leadership at BGA will serve as a legacy for all to follow.

Lucas G. Boyd Faculty Development Fund Established in 1998 by faculty, students and friends to honor a man whose life has stood for excellence in teaching. Dr. Lucas G. Boyd served as Head of Upper School for 18 years. Incomes from this fund are to be used to perpetuate a great teaching tradition at BGA by supporting faculty professional development programs.

William A. S. Camstra 1951 Fund Endowed Fund established by William Camstra in April 1999 with the stipulation that this fund be used for faculty

support. Mr. Camstra graduated from BGA in 1951 and later served as Vice Chairman of the Kellogg Corporation in Battle Creek, Michigan. He now resides in The Woodlands, Texas.

Robin S. Courtney Faculty Endowment Memorial Fund The Dr. H. Pitts Hinson Family established this Fund in memory of Mr. Courtney in 2000. Mr. Courtney graduated from BGA in 1946 and was an outstanding attorney in Columbia, TN. Income from the Fund will be used to perpetuate the outstanding teachers at BGA.

Faculty Endowment Fund The Faculty Endowment Fund was established in the year 2000. This Fund is dedicated to the luminaries of the past and to those teachers who demonstrate their talents in today’s classrooms.

James E. French Faculty Endowment Fund This fund was established in 2000 to honor Jimmy French upon his retirement as Director of Development at BGA. Mr. French served as a teacher and coach at BGA from 1959-1964 and as Director of Development from 1992-2000.

W. Paul Redick Faculty Endowment Fund The W. Paul Redick Faculty Endowment Fund was established in 2000 by the Henry H. Chase, Jr. family. Mr. Chase graduated from BGA in 1957 and resides in Huntsville, AL. Mr. Redick was Headmaster of BGA from 1950 to 1968 and his career as an administrator, educator, and mentor of students spans several decades.

Funds For Awards

The Golden Apple Award Established in 1984 by the Dr. Eslick Daniel family for excellence in teaching. An annual award with a cash prize will be awarded to those teachers in the lower, middle and upper schools, who best exemplify the characteristics of a great teacher.

The Second Mile Award This award was made possible in 1986 by family and friends in memory of Mark Knabe, Class of 1987. This award is presented to a teacher or staff member in the lower, middle and upper school, who has gone the “second mile” in helping students.

W. D. Mooney English Medal This award is presented to the senior with the highest scholastic average in the subject of English. This award is

given in memory of W. D. Mooney, Headmaster of BGA from 1889 to 1902. The award established in 1979 was endowed by the H. Pitts Hinson Family in 1999.

James Harrison Campbell 1921 French Medal This award is given to the senior with the highest scholastic average in the subject of Upper Level French. Established in 1983 by his children, William Winder Campbell, II and Lillian Campbell Stewart in memory of their father. Mr. Campbell graduated in the Class of 1921 and was a prominent leader in the community. A gift from the children in 1998 has endowed the annual expenses for this medal.

Sandra Davis Drama MedalSandra Wagner Davis taught drama, speech and debate at Battle Ground Academy for almost 19 years until her death in May 2009. She was loved and admired by all of her students and colleagues. Ms. Davis was inducted into the BGA Faculty Hall of Fame in 2008. Her job was a labor of love, and she had a knack for making sure no one slipped through the cracks. Everyone was important to her and that is why she worked so tirelessly and passionately. Former students, parents of alumni, friends and colleagues came together in 2010-2011 to raise the $5,000 necessary to endow this award, which will continue to be given to deserving drama students for years to come.

Matilou B. Duke Speech Award Given in memory of Matilou B. Duke who was the first full-time speech and debate teacher at BGA. She served the school for over 20 years. This award goes to the senior who has made the greatest contribution to the speech program. The award was endowed in 1998 by the family.

Glenn Eddington Math Award Established in 1998 in memory of Glenn Eddington by the Class of 1948 and many of his former students. Mr. Eddington was an outstanding math professor and taught at BGA for 20 years. He also served the School as Headmaster from 1944-1950. The award is given to the senior with the highest scholastic average in the subject of calculus.

Paul Guffee 1961 Memorial Award Established in 1968 by former Headmaster and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Redick, in memory of Paul Guffee, Class of 1961, who was an outstanding student and athlete at BGA. By a vote of the faculty, this award is presented to a senior that exhibits excellence in leadership, athletics and all other phases of school life. This award was permanently endowed in 1998 through a gift from the Guffee family.

Helen & Ralph Brown 1949 Spirit Medal This award was established in 1953 and was endowed in 1999 by the family. Helen and Ralph have served and supported BGA since his graduation in 1949. The medal is voted on by the faculty and presented to the senior that has exhibited extraordinary school spirit throughout the year.

David A. Hernandez 1949 Award Established in 1995 by the class of 1995 in memory of David A. Hernandez, Class of 1949, who taught at BGA for 23 years. This award was endowed by the Thomas T. Woodall family and is presented to the graduating senior who exhibits a special courage during their years at BGA. Judge Woodall graduated in the Class of 1973.

Edward Tyndall Stalcup 1947 Valedictorian Award This award began in 1965 and was endowed in 1999 in memory of Edward Tyndall Stalcup by his family. Stalcup graduated from BGA in 1947 and his brother, William T. Stalcup graduated in 1948. Mr. Stalcup grew up in Franklin and his family raised American Saddlebred horses. He later moved to Texas and started his own gift shop business before retiring in 1996. This award is presented to the Valedictorian of the senior class.

William H. Smith 1971 Salutatory Medal Established in 1998 in memory of William H. Smith, Class of 1971, by his classmates and friends. While at BGA, Bill Smith represented high personal standards, graduating with honors in 1971. Later in life, he excelled in his profession of law. This award is given to the salutatorian of the senior class.

Pinkerton Watch Established in 1975 by Mr. and Mrs. Joe Pinkerton, Sr. to honor their sons, Dr. Joe Pinkerton, Class of 1956 and Dr. Frank Pinkerton, Class of 1963. The award is presented to the senior who, in the judgment of the faculty, is the best all-around student.

BGA Alumni Association Bill Ross 1972 Award This award began in 1973 and was endowed by the Alumni Association in 1999. This award was named in memory of Bill Ross, Class of 1972. The award is given to the senior who, in the judgment of the student body, helped those who needed help, always acting quietly without recognition and thought of self.

Daly Thompson 1910 Latin Medal Established in 1968 by his family. Daly Thompson, Class of

1910, was an outstanding teacher at BGA and served as an administrator in the Franklin Public School System. This award goes to the student with the highest scholastic average in the subject of Latin.

Clint Rice Memorial Citizenship Award Established in 1981 in Clint Rice’s memory by the Ronald S. Ligon family. In 1998 the award was endowed by the Ronald S. Ligon family and the Tandy Rice family. This award is presented to the best all-around eighth grade student in the Middle School who most portrays those outstanding qualities of good character exemplified by Clint Rice.

Jackson Holloway Berry “Good Hands” Award The “Good Hands” Award is presented to the best defensive player on the BGA baseball team each year. It was established in 2000 in memory of Jackson Berry, a student who lost his life in an automobile accident. Jackson was always relied on for his “good hands” as a great defensive baseball player as well as in his sense of helping, loving and supporting others.

Katie Jeter Community Service Award This award was established in February 2004 in memory of Katie Jeter who lost her life in an automobile accident. Katie was a BGA graduate, Class of 2003 and attended Western Kentucky University. Katie served her church, community, school and family. She taught others what the word “service” means. This award is presented to the student who quietly serves their community without expectation of any recognition, as Katie Jeter lived her life. Durwood Sies 1940 Leadership AwardStarted in 1950 by the Durwood Sies family in memory of Durwood Sies, a 1940 graduate of BGA and a decorated World Ward II pilot. Mr. Sies was President of Sies Electric Supply Company in Chattanooga, TN. The award is presented to the senior who exhibits the most outstanding leadership.

R.N. and Catherine Moore Art Award Mr. Robert N. Moore, Jr., Class of 1952, endowed this award in 2003, in memory of his parents. The award is given to a senior based on the number of art classes taken, highest overall art grade average, and participation in extra-curricular activities including the yearbook, quadrangle and scholastic art shows.

James M. Harrison 1972 Achievement Award This award was endowed in 2004 through contributions by Jim’s fellow classmates in the BGA Class of 1972. This award

is given to the varsity football player who, in the judgment of the coaches, demonstrates outstanding character, sportsmanship, work ethic and perseverance.

Robin Altshuler Endowed Achievement Award The Robin Leigh Altshuler award is presented each year in memory of a loving BGA mother dedicated to helping others. The award is presented to the graduating senior who exemplifies a spirit of unconditional service to others and community. This award recognizes the student who naturally serves others, in memory of Robin Leigh Altshuler.

Bronwen Mary Bartley Ambassador Award This fund was established in 2006 by a BGA Faculty member, in memory of a New Zealand native named Bronwen Mary Bartley, who through her act of sincere friendship as a teenager forever changed the life of an American student at her school. The award is for an Upper School student who has befriended a student new to the school who is culturally or by nationality different from him or her, and as a result, changed both lives for the better through the understanding that we are all far more alike than we are different.

Other Restricted Funds

F.A. O’Daniel Technology Fund Established in 1996 by Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Cantrell, in memory of Mrs. Cantrell’s father. This fund underwrites some of the cost for technology at BGA.

Oviatt Foreign Language Fund Established through a bequest from the estate of Ms. Mabel Smith Oviatt, Class of 1922. This fund is to be used to enhance the studies in the Foreign Language departments.

Malcolm M. Gibbs 1923 Museum Fund Endowed Fund to be used for care of the Malcolm Gibbs Museum in the historic Glen Echo home. Established in April 1999, by Malcolm M. Gibbs, Class of 1923, in memory of his two brothers, William M. Gibbs, Class of 1918 and Kennedy M. Gibbs, Class of 1925.

Unrestricted Funds

William L. Reese Memorial Fund Established in 1995 from the estate of William L. Reese. There are no restrictions on this fund.

John A. Jordan, Jr. 1932 Memorial Trust Fund Established in 1994 from the estate of John Jordan, Class of 1932. There are no restrictions on this fund.

Gerard MacDonald Memorial Endowment Fund Established in 1999 by John Phipps, Jr., Class of 1971, in memory of his classmate. There are no restrictions on this fund.

THE EVERBRIGHT SOCIETY MEMBERS

The Everbright Society was established to honor and recognize those individuals who have generously included Battle Ground Academy in their estate plans. Gifts of this type are generally directed toward endowment and last in perpetuity, benefitting present and future generations of BGA students. This legacy society takes its name from the Everbright Mansion which served as the temporary school when BGA’s main building burned in 1902 and again in 1910.

The Everbright Society offers donors a way to create a permanent legacy to benefit BGA, both today and in the future. Donors may make gifts or a bequest of any size to support the School. These planned gifts can also provide donors with important tax savings as well as other benefits.
