Many of us thought thehostage takeover at the Salt Lake City Library in 1994 was an exception, but recent events show weneed to be alert. Join officers from the Las Cruces Police Department as they discuss staff and patronsafety issues. There will be time for your questions as well, such as : what to do when children areleft outside at closing with no parent in sight.

How to ask Meaningful Questions whenAssessing Instructional Programming / Kate Manuel, Instruction Coordinator, New MexicoState University - Jan Hylen, Educational Librarian, New Mexico State University.Increasing demands for accountability from educational institutions mean that it is no longer acceptable for library instruction programs to justify their services in terms of the numbers of classes or persons taught. Rather, instructional programming must demonstrate that it has both psychologicallysatisfied the needs of learners and concretely facilitated students' mastery of learn'ing outcomes in order for it to claim its share of institutional resources and librarians' time. This workshop focuses onhow to write questions for surveys and tests that will tell you what you really want to know. Somebasic principles of writing meaningful questions will be explored, and examples of good and bad questions will be examined in small-group discussions.
