AWARDS
I N T R O D U C T I O N T H E B FA H S B C B R I T I S H F R A N C H I S E AWA R D S Entries to apply for an award at the bfa HSBC British Franchise Awards are now open. The evening is a particularly prestigious event, showcasing the very best of franchising and championing franchisors and franchisees who have helped drive their business, and the franchising industry, forward.
The bfa HSBC British Franchise Awards truly are your opportunity to increase your reputation and gain significant exposure for your business. Getting shortlisted for a category is a humongous honour and can be particularly beneficial for your franchise.
Entries for both the franchisor and franchisee categories are open, and will close on February 21, 2020. You must read the criteria for the categories fully to ensure you are eligible to enter.
H I G H L I G H T S F O R Y O U R B R A N D A N D B U S I N E SSLast year, the bfa managed to secure record PR coverage for the awards and all of the brands shortlisted, with dedicated hits in nationally and globally recognised publishers.
The combined reach of the campaign sat at over 74,000,000, with a PR value of over £1,100,000. There were over 200 external mentions, as well as a sustained social media campaign with a reach of 3,000,000. Being a brand associated with and shortlisted for an award really does put a spotlight on your business.
S U P E RC H A RG E Y O U R B R A N D All finalists have the option to partake in a paid social campaign highlighting the opportunities available in your business, as well as a bespoke video professionally created, edited and included, which will also be available after the campaign has ended. Last year, the 2019 Best in Franchising Guide resulted in 677,703 impressions, of which 268,109 were unique, and 2,708 downloads. All of this was hugely beneficial to members exclusively invited to take part.
Driver Hire won Franchisor of the Year – Gold, in 2019 Jennie Mills won Young Female Franchisee. Flanked by bfa CEO Pip Wilkins and HSBC Head of UK
Franchising Andy Brattesani
“ W H AT T H E AWA R D S M E A NBut don’t just take our word for it, hear from some of the winners from last year:
Ed Gill, Franchise Recruitment Manager at Radfield Home Care, winner of Emerging Franchisor:
“After claiming the award, we have noticed an upsurge in prospective franchise partners enquiring about taking on a franchise. The incredible reputation of the bfa really holds so much weight, and we have capitalised on this by heavily promoting our awards victory in promotional materials both in print and digitally.”
Graham Duckworth, Franchise Sales Director at Driver Hire, winner of Franchisor of the Year – Gold:
“The award win was great news for our business. It generated an extra feeling of pride across the whole Driver Hire network, and in practical terms, it’s helping franchisee recruitment. Many of the people enquiring about Driver Hire franchise opportunities reference the award win as a reason for their enquiry.”
Jennie Mills, franchisee at Rainbow International Derbyshire, winner of Young Female Franchisee:
“The whole bfa awards process right from application all the way through to the conference and ceremony is like no other. Challenging, but exceptionally worthwhile from both a personal and business perspective. Winning ‘Young Female Franchisee’ in 2019 certainly propelled my business within the franchise industry and that’s just one of the many reasons I would strongly advise those considering applying to do so. You won’t regret it!”
W H Y A P P LY I N G I S G O O D F O R Y O U The application process enables you to evaluate your business and highlight where you have excelled, taking a holistic approach towards your business. And for franchise systems entering a franchisee, it is a really good motivator and an indicator as to the trust and faith you are placing in the franchisee, which will only further propel them to excel.
J U D G I N GAn elite panel of judges with extensive experience in franchising will scrupulously look at the entries. An endorsement from the panel is a sure sign that your franchise is thriving.
States Pip Wilkins, CEO at the bfa:
“The judges are looking for substantial evidence that the franchise is going above and beyond in the category for which it has applied, whether in a franchisor category or a franchisee, as well as displaying a clear understanding of franchising ethics.”
Andy Brattesani, Head of UK Franchising at HSBC, adds:
“HSBC has been sponsoring the awards for many years and we feel it is such an important event on the franchising calendar. Everyone who is shortlisted shows excellence in franchising, which is pivotal to what the awards are all about.”
S U B M I S S I O N S All franchisor and franchisee entries must have been
received by the bfa by 5pm on Friday, February 21.

CLOSE DATE: 21ST FEBRUARY 2020The theme for this year’s awards is all around inclusivity. Evolve and involve to grow franchising in Great Britain.
This is the ultimate award in UK franchising. Not only will you be a strong advocate of ethical franchising, you will have successfully evolved your business to deal with economic challenges and changing consumer demands. This accolade is not just about numbers, it encompasses all that and much more. You will be able to evidence strong infrastructure and support for your network, ensuring franchisees have the best environment to succeed and reach their full potential. Judges will be looking for strategies that stand out from the crowd; those that are going above and beyond and can convey this along with substantial evidence to support positive network impact. The entire franchisee lifecycle should be a priority, ensuring franchisees are not only embedded well into the system but ongoing engagement allows them to realise a good return on their investment through resale.

Judges are looking for strong international brands that have successfully expanded overseas from their country of origin. This cannot be a game of selling master licenses to make a quick buck; judges are looking for managed growth that has contributed to an increase in international brand value. It is key that the network of origin remained thriving during the expansion and strong international results can be evidenced.

This is more than a new website, CRM system, an app or simply adopting a social marketing strategy. The judges want to hear what happens to the business when the going gets tough and the tough gets tougher. What measures have you taken to turn your business around? Or simply ensure that it doesn’t fall foul of technological advancements and digital strategies? How are you remaining relevant, fresh and reinventing your brand, network and business to be fit for the next generation of consumers?
