Bf 110C/E over MTO 1164 GERMAN WW II HEAVY FIGHTER Messerschmitt Bf 110 intro The first pages of history for the famous Zerstörer Bf 110 were written at the end of 1934, when C-Amt RLM (the technical branch of the Reich’s Air Ministry) issued a specification for a two seat, twin engined aircraft to fulfill a need within the Kamfzerstörer category. Submitted proposals came from Focke-Wulf (Fw 57), Henschel (Hs 124) and BFW (Messerschmitt Bf 110). In the spring of 1935, the RLM changed its thinking on the spec and cancelled the universal Kamfzerstörer category in favor of two specific types, the Schnellbomber and the Zerstörer. The new concept of a heavy fighter of the RLM were best satisfied by the Messerschmitt design, which wasn’t really dictated as much by the original specifications. The first prototype, the Bf 110 V1, first flew May 12, 1936, and the modified second prototype V2 was submitted to the Erprobungstelle in Rechlin on January 14, 1937. Four development aircraft, A-01 to A-04, powered by JUMO 210Da engines, were delivered at the beginning of 1938. A production run of 45 Bf 110B’s began in July, powered by JUMO 210Ga engines, delivering some 500kW (680hp). At the end of 1938, the production line for the high performance DB 601 finally got going, and these were mounted into the first major Bf 110 version, the Bf 110C. The Bf 110C, as was the case with the Bf 110B, was armed with two MG FF cannon, mounted in the fuselage below the cockpit floor, four MG 17 machine guns mounted in the nose and one rear firing MG 15 machine gun manned by the gunner/radio operator. There was a crew of two. The Luftwaffe received a total of 169 Bf 110C’s by September, 1939. The first combat experience of the type in Norway and France uncovered a small operational radius, unsuitable for an escort fighter. The first attempt to remedy the shortcoming came in the form of a large, underfuselage conformal type external fuel tank, called the Dackelbauch. The Bf 110C-3, adapted to carry this tank, were redesignated D-0. Results were not entirely satisfactory with the D version, and so there was a reconstruction of the fuel system, after which aircraft of the D version carried two drop tanks under the wings, and a small oil tank under the fuselage. The Bf 110D also standardized a longer fuselage, by way of an extension at the rear carrying a life raft and other emergency survival gear. This was a feature also evident on some subsequent Bf 110E’s, which were equipped with bomb racks under the fuselage and wings. The majority of Bf 110E’s were powered by the DB 601N engines. The following Bf 110F received the DB 601F engines housed in reshaped nacelles, with newer, more rounded spinners, aerodynamic features taken from the Bf 109F. Upgrading efforts were noted in the armament as well, where the MG FF were replaced by MG 151’s. Significant changes came with the Bf 110G, powered by new DB 605 engines. The rear firing MG 82Z double gun appeared on the G-2, and with the G-4 came the replacement of four forward firing machine guns with two 30 mm MK 108 cannon. The G-4 also saw larger rudders mounted. The Bf 110 went through not only technical changes throughout its career, but also through a development of its operational use. It entered the war as a heavy escort and attack fighter. By the time of the Battle of Britain, it became apparent that the aircraft, in the role of escort fighter, had been pushing the envelope of its capabilities. On the contrary, as a defensive weapon against British bombers, the Bf 110 made an extremely good showing of itself, and remained a deadly foe through to the end of the war. The placement of RAF bombing operations within nighttime hours from 1941 brought the Bf 110 into the realm of nightfighting on the Western Front. On the Eastern Front, they excelled as fast fighter bombers. Their earlier role as a day attack fighter was still fulfilled not only on the Eastern Front (where they were employed throughout the war successfully even as the originally envisioned escort fighter), but also on the Western Front into the depths of the summer of 1944, where the role was abandoned primarily, and finally, due to the effectiveness of American fighter escorts. As a nightfighter in the G-4 version, thanks to a heavy forward firing armament and radar, they soldiered on literally until the very end of the war. As such, it was the nightfighter role that would prove to be the most significant for the Bf 110 during the course of the Second World War. Verze C, stejnì jako pøedchozí B, mìla výzbroj tvoøenou dvìma kanóny MG FF, montovanými do trupu pod podlahou prostoru posádky, ètyømi kulomety MG 17 lafetovanými v nose letounu, a jedním vzad støílejícím kulometem MG 15, obsluhovaným radistou/støelcem. Posádka byla dvouèlenná. Do záøí 1939 dostala Luftwaffe 169 strojù Bf 110C. Již první bojové zkušenosti z Norska a Francie ukázaly na malý operaèní dolet, nevyhovující pro doprovodné stíhaèky. Prvním øešením tohoto problému byla známá velká podtrupová pøídavná nádrž zvaná Dackelbauch. Stroje verze C-3, adaptované k nesení této nádrže, byly pøeznaèeny na D-0. Prodloužené trupy zùstaly i na nìkterých sériích následující verze Bf 110E, která byla vybavena pumovými závìsníky pod trupem a pod køídlem. Vìtšina Bf 110E byla pohánìna motory DB 601N. Následující verze Bf 110F dostala nové motory DB 601F v novì tvarovaných kapotách, s novými, mohutnìjšími vrtulovými kužely – aerodynamika stroje byla zjemnìna ve stylu Bf 109F. Modernizací prošla i výzbroj, staré kanóny MG FF byly nahrazeny modernìjšími MG 151. Významnou zmìnu pøinesly stroje øady Bf 110G, pohánìné novými výkonnými motory DB 605. Od verze G-2 byl instalován vzad støílející dvojkulomet MG 82Z, u verze G-4 pak byly ètyøi kulomety v pøídi nahrazeny dvìma 30 mm kanóny MK 108. U G-4 byly také zvìtšeny smìrovky. Bf 110 prošel bìhem své váleèné služby nejen øadou technických zmìn, k významným zmìnám došlo také v jeho operaèním nasazení. Do války typ vstupoval jako tìžký doprovodný a pøepadový stíhaè. Již v dobì Bitvy o Anglii bylo zøetelné, že role doprovodné stíhaèky je na hranicích možností stroje. Naopak v obranných bojích proti britským bombardérùm se Bf 110 velmi osvìdèily a jako pøepadový tìžký stíhaè byl Bf 110 smrtelnì nebezpeèným protivníkem až do konce války. Vzhledem k pøesunu bombardovacích operací RAF do noèních hodin pak od roku 1941 Bf 110 pøecházely na západì do role noèních stíhaèek. Na východní frontì se zase významnì prosadily jako rychlé stíhací bombardéry. Svojí pùvodní úlohu tìžké denní pøepadové stíhaèky pøesto plnily dál jak na východì (zde po celou válku úspìšnì bojovaly i ve své pùvodní roli doprovodných stíhaèek), tak na západì až hluboko do léta roku 1944, kdy jí pro tìžké ztráty, zpùsobované pøedevším americkými doprovodnými stíhaèkami, definitivnì opustily. Jako noèní stíhaèky ve verzi G-4, díky silné hlavòové výzbroji a instalovanému radaru, ovšem efektivnì bojovaly až do samotného konce války. Noèní stíhání se tak nakonec stalo jednou z nejdùležitìjších èinností Bf 110 ve 2. svìtové válce. 1:48 SCALE PLASTIC KIT This mount was flown by Heinz Nacke who achieved 14 victories in WW2. All his victories are dated from May 12 to August 30, 1940. Nacke was awarded the Knight's Cross on November 2, 1940. His combat career started in the Spanish Civil War and he participated in the Balkans campaign as a 6./ZG 76 member. Later, he commanded II./ZG 76 (redesignated III./ NJG 3 later on), Erprobungskommando 25 that tested heavy weapons for the destruction of four-engined bombers. He returned to the Mediterranean area as the CO of II./ZG 1 based in Montecorvino, Italy. He had to withdraw from the frontline unit thanks to an injury suffered in a crash landing. The wreck of this 8./ZG 26 aircraft was found by the Allies on one of the North African airfields. Note the red individual letter on the fuselage and the red spinner tips - the markingof the 8th Staffel´s aircraft. The camouflage scheme consists of desert colours - RLM 79 Sandgelb and RLM 78 Hellblau. The white stripe on the tail identifies the aircraft flown in the Mediterranean Theatre of Operations (MTO).

Vrak tohoto letounu, který patøil do 8. Staffel Zerstörergeschwader 26, byl vyfotografován na jednom z letiš� v severní Africe. Kromì èerveného individuálního písmena na boku trupu a spodku køídla má také èervené špièky vrtulových kuželù, oznaèení strojù 8. Staffel. Kamuflážní nátìr je tvoøen typickou pouštní kombinací barev RLM 79 Sandgelb a RLM 78 Hellblau. Bílý pruh na zádi oznaèuje letoun nasazený ve Støedomoøí, nìkdy byl doplnìn i bílými konci køídla.

This aircraft belonged to Nachtjagd Division or Nachtjagd Division 1, as evidenced from the unit´s badge on the nose. The all-black camouflage indicates the aircraft was ready for night operations. The white stripe on the tail remains on the aircraft from the time of its inspection flight probably to the Mediterranean area.

Tento letoun patøil do Nachtjagd Division nebo Nachtjagd Division 1, což symbolizuje znak jednotky na pøídi letounu. Celoèerná kamufláž stroje jej pøedurèuje k noèním operacím. Bílý pruh na zádi zøejmì upomíná na pobyt letounu na støedomoøském bojišti, kdy byl použit jako dopravní prostøedek pro dùstojníky provádìjící inspekci.

Theodor Rossiwall gained 17 victories during WW2. He entered combat in the Spanish Civil War and managed to destroy two enemy aircraft. On August 6, 1941 he was awarded the Knight's Cross. At that time, he held the rank of Captain and led 5./ZG 26. Rossiwall´s Bf 110 wears the yellow marking typical for the Balkans campaign. Subsequently,he served with nightfighter units NJG 101, NJG 4 and became the CO of the entire ZG 76 in August, 1943. As can be seen, the Ace of Spades was not exclusively the unit badgeof JG 52. The Clog is the unit crest of II. Gruppe of ZG 26.

Theodor Rossiwall dosáhl za 2. svìtové války celkem 17 sestøelù. Bojové ostruhy získal ve španìlské obèanské válce, kde se mu podaøilo sestøelit dva letouny. Dne 6. srpna 1941 se stal držitelem Rytíøského køíže. V té dobì již mìl hodnost kapitána a velel 5. Staffel ZG 26. Rossiwallùv letoun nese žluté doplòky typické pro tažení na Balkánì. Pozdìji sloužil u noèních stíhacích jednotek NJG 101 a NJG 4 a v srpnu 1943 se ujal velení celé ZG 76. Na tomto stroji je vidìt, že pikové eso nepoužívala jako svùj znak pouze JG 53,ale také 5./ZG 26. Døevák je znakem II. Gruppe ZG 26.

This airplane sports the original German camouflage scheme of RLM 70 and RLM 71 on the upper surfaces. The lower surfaces were painted black. The former German marking was overpainted using the Verde Oliva Scuro 2 colour. Note the interesting mixture of Italian and German national insignia. This airplane was flown by Capt. Arami Ammannato who downed a British Lancaster four-engined bomber on July 16/17, 1943.

Základem kamufláže tohoto letounu, užívaného italským letectvem, je pùvodní nìmecké zbarvení. Je tvoøeno lomenými poli barev RLM 70 a RLM 71 na horních plochách. Spodní plochy byly natøeny na èerno. Místa, kde se na trupu objevovalo pùvodní nìmecké oznaèení, byla pøetøena jiným odstínem, zøejmì barvou Verde Oliva Scuro 2. Zajímavá je kombinace nìmeckých a italských výsostných znakù. Jedním z pilotù tohoto stroje byl také cap. Arami Ammannato, vítìz nad britským Lancasterem z noci 16./17. èervence 1943.

This mount was flown by Heinz Nacke who achieved 14 victories in WW2. All his victories are dated from May 12 to August 30, 1940. Nacke was awarded the Knight's Cross on November 2, 1940. His combat career started in the Spanish Civil War and he participated in the Balkans campaign as a 6./ZG 76 member. Later, he commanded II./ZG 76 (redesignated III./ NJG 3 later on), Erprobungskommando 25 that tested heavy weapons for the destruction of four-engined bombers. He returned to the Mediterranean area as the CO of II./ZG 1 based in Montecorvino, Italy. He had to withdraw from the frontline unit thanks to an injury suffered in a crash landing. Oberst Heinz Nacke passed away in 1984.

Na tomto stroji létal Heinz Nacke, stíhací eso se 14 vítìzstvími. Nacke dosáhl všechna svá vítìzství na západní frontì od 12. kvìtna do 30. srpna 1940, jako pøíslušník 6. Staffel ZG 76. Dne 2. listopadu byl vyznamenán Rytíøským køížem. Kariéru váleèného letce zaèal ve španìlské obèanské válce. Jako pøíslušník 6./ZG 76 se zúèastnil také taženína Balkánì. Pozdìji velel II./ZG 76 (pozdìji pøeznaèené na III./ NJG 3), Erprobungskommandu 25, které testovalo tìžké zbranì k nièení bombardérù a do Støedomoøí se vrátilv roce 1943 jako velitel II./ZG 1 se základnou v italském Montecorvino. Zde utrpìl pøi pøeletu jednoho stroje tìžká zranìní, jež mu dále neumožnila velet prvoliniové jednotce. Oberst Heinz Nacke zemøel v roce 1984.
