Re: Not Just Kiddie Fare Anymore

I came across your comparison between childrensmovies and amily lms over the last thirty yearsand I have to say, I was both impressed and enter-tained by a lot o the reviews. While its certainlytrue that a lot o childrens lms contain more thana handul o jokes aimed more towards the grown-ups in the audience, I dont believe that the lmsthemselves have sufered or the gain in more adulthumour. Te kids still enjoy the silly jokes whileMom and Dad share a grin over their heads at thesubtle innuendo (or example, when Puss In Bootsis busted or having catnip). Great article, I hopeto see more like it in uture!

    feature story

raditionally in the lm world, the Christmasseason is a time or Oscar bait and amily un lms. However, this season there seemed to be a new genreor style trying to get a oothold on the lucrativeseason.

Tat genre or style is 3D. Oscar Winning directorsSteven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese released criti-cally acclaimed pictures that eatured eye-poppingeects.

Te Adventures o intin was a box-ofce smashraking in more than $360 million and Hugo is anominee or Best Picture. Leading to the question:Is 3D overtaking 2D as the new preerred method o

lmmaking among the industrys elite much as talk-ies did silent lm over 80 years ago?

From a longevity standpoint, theres a lot moresense that it is here to stay. With digital camerasthere are more tools making it simple to shoot, saysJohn Helliker, an instructor with the Screen Re-search and raining Centre (SIR). Having peoplelike Scorcese and Speilberg involved in doing 3Dis not just about a big name director. What youregetting is a director who has a real grasp on the useo lm language and the dierent methods to tell astory through lm.

Ninety years ago when Harry K. Fairall rst exhib-

ited his remarkable new dual strip projection, it couldnever have been imagined where that technologywould lead.

Fairalls invention was then tweaked and altereduntil the invention o the Polaroid lters. Polaroidsallowed the 3D technology to evolve into what werecognize today.

Te lenses o the now inamous goggles are eachpolarized dierently allowing the each eye to view di-erent projections on the same screen.

3D is basically seeing two images at once. Whenyou wear the glasses one eye is seeing one image and

the other is seeing the other image. Tey then blendtogether to orm a 3D image, said Alex Broughton, aCanadian lmmaker, and 2011 Best Drama, Best Cin-ematography, and Best Screenplay winner or AnnuitCoeptis at the York Region Film Festival.

Te early 1950s are considered the Golden Ageo 3D. Between 1952 and 1955 we saw the release oseveral groundbreaking 3D lms such as Bwana Devil,House o Wax, and Inerno. Te improved technologybrought the audience back into the theatres and gavethem a glimpse into the uture. Tis technology would

last another 30 years until IMAX lms improvquality o the 3D technology.

In 2009 director James Cameron would releAvatar and completely change the possibilitiesand the way we see lm. In Avatar the 3D eealmost constant throughout the lm. Te eecattempt to bring the viewer closer to the lm rthan surprise them.

I you look at 3D now and the way its usedthe Avatar situation, its a more muted use o 3Helliker. Earlier on, especially in the 1950s it about something coming out o the screen to syou.

3D in the present: Try not to over

Since Avatars release, it has gone on to becohighest grossing lm o all-time and inspired lo 3D imitators and experimenters alike. Te sood o 3D lms has led some people to questwhen the technology is appropriate.

You want to make sure that i your doing sothing in 3D you have tested the t ype or materihave or 3D, said Helliker. I you have an actiproject or release to theatres then you would plook at 3D more seriously than something tha

3d moviesA fad or the future?

    By Brice Roy

Films like The Adventures of Tintin and Hugo have seen 3D movies thrown furthernto the spotlight. 3D has been popular before, is it finally here to stay?

James Camerons Avatar was a huge blockbuster success but you have to beful not over-do the effects when it comes to making 3D movies.

raight 2 or 3 person drama.Te size o a 3D production also changes how arector would lm certain scenes in their lm. I Im

oing to shoot in 3D I realize that I may have to sac-ce or change how I want to shoot the lm based one size o the production, said Broughton. It comes

own to story. Tere has still been no real drama thatas come out in 3D. Teres no need. You still believeure in the lms world without the ash.Even television companies have jumped on the

andwagon and adapted their technology to allow 3Dewing at home. However, enjoying 3D at home depends on the

ewer. Lots o times when people tune in a home t otelevision show or a movie that s when they might ben their laptop or checking their phone. Obviously, insituation where your wearing the glasses and watch-g the dierent screens it makes it more difcult and

ncomortable, says Helliker. As ar as the televisionewing experience goes I still get immersed in the 3Dpect at home.

The future of 3D: Another ameout orontinued success?

Tanks to digital lming technologies the 3D lm-

ing process has gotten much easier. Tis has led to thebelie among industry experts that the current ood o3D titles is unlikely to subside anytime soon.

From a longevity standpoint, theres a lot moresense that it is here to stay, says Helliker. Te newerdigital aspect, cameras and projection, has made itsomething that has a much higher potential to stay.

While the new technology has made lming easier, directors are still nding the right way to incorporateit while not embellishing. Both the technology andthe creative process o using it are going through anevolution, but theres a long way to go, says Helliker.Tere is real a learning curve thats happening as thetechnology is being integrated. For the next little whileI think that just making sure its developed properly isthe main concern.

Te astounding new technology has both its advo-cates and detractors. Ultimately, what both groups can

agree on is that while eye-popping special eects arenice, how they are blended or added to a good stor ydetermines the enjoyment o the lm.

I think 3D will now always be here, but I thinkartistically 3D should depend on how it suits the story.Tats the most important thing, says Broughton.Te medium o lm is e ventually going to die downand be completely digital, but not until digital anima-tion creates the same eect as actual lm.

    underworld awakening

Vampire warrioSelene (Kate Bsale) leads theagainst the Vaand Lycan clan

    STAR RATING: 5 / 5

    By AdamTaylor

Te latest installment in the Underworld series,Awakening gives us a glimpse o the world ater hu-manity has become aware o the Vampire and Lycanpopulations. Humanity united against the mon-sters, and struck back. Amazingly enough, eventhough through the various Underworld movies, weve seen the incredible powers and super-advancedtechnology that the Vampires and Lycans have accessto, they seem to have been given a proper beat-downby humanity.

I suppose a movie about an eternal battle betweenvampires and werewolves requires a bit o accep-tance. So that oddity aside, the movie was actuallyquite good story-wise. Selene (Kate Beckinsale) iscaptured while trying to escape with Michael (ScottSpeedman), who has a very brie role in this lm. Aresearch company runs a battery o experiments onSelene and Michael to try and use their abilities ortheir own purposes. Dr. Lane (Stephen Rea) is theman in charge, and leads the eorts to recapture Se-lene ater her escape, 12 years ater her c apture, alongwith a young girl called Eve (India Eisley). Eve hasthe hybrid super-powers o Michael.

Troughout the movie, we learn more about Evesorigins, as well as how the world has changed sincehumanity has discovered the monsters in their midst.

Te story is given at a decent pace, mixed withincredible ght scenes or which the Underworseries has become amous. Te movie was desigor the 3D screen and it shows.

Unortunately, while the action might be bretaking at times, it does hide some o the horribwritten lines that crop up rom time to time. HEve hal-tearully exclaim that Selene has returor her, and hearing Selene respond with I tolI would in an emotionally tense manner, elt aodd. Teres a brie pause ater the line, makingviewer wonder i were supposed to be eeling sthing specic or i they just did some bad editiTere are a ew such comments throughout themovie, which give some awkward pauses. But bthose ew instances, the movie does a very goodo delivering its story. However or those lookia good sense o closure, you wont nd it with tmovie, as it ends on a rather blatant clihanger

Overall, i youre looking or another great ation movie in the Underworld universe, you wodisappointed. Te acting isnt exactly award winning, but then thats not why you go to see an amovie. Underworld: Awakening delivers an actlled adventure that deepens the lore o t he woits in, and leaves us wanting more.

    The Mechanic

    By Chad Brown

en Foster (left) and Jason Statham take ainute to discuss the details.

Attention action movie junkies. Te Me-chanic will x you up.

Te Mechanic opened on Friday to muchexcitement rom action movie ans. Teremake held true to the Charles Bronson

version with some much appreciated tweak-ing.

Te 38-year-old Jason Statham is back atit with his cool demeanor. Te day he stopslooking so clam and collected while doingsome o the most intense stunts is the dayI dont want to see him in movies. He pullsno punches with acts such as jumping o

bridges, smashing up cars and scaling sky-scrapers. He was probably happy about hisdecision to do all his own stunts when itcame to the sex scene with the smoking hotMini Anden.

But dont expect 92 minutes o gun tot-ing shoot em up action. Tis lm also has adecent plot and good character developmentas Stathams character murders a weaponsdealer in ront o his apprentice Ben Foster.

Te end is a dead give away i youve seenthe original but still leaves a lasting impres-sion.

Even though Statham is the main attrac-tion, Foster blasts onto centre stage witha commanding supportive role. He liter-ally killed it in the rst and most excitingght scene where he takes on a seven-oot,300-pound monster o a hit man.

I youre not one or blood and violence, you should go see No Strings Attached orsomething a little easier on the eyes becausethis is chalked ull o explosive heads andbone crunching battles.

Director Simon West took a classic dis-play o Bronson and turned it into a cin-ematic experience. For the realist, you might

want to suspend your disbelie just a littlebit but this movie will make you cringe withits gritty ght scenes and squirm with theblood splatters.
