Do you everwonder if your life isinteresting enough? There are thosewho are thrill seekers who live lifeto the fullest and cannever seem toget enough, then there are thosewho like the more simple andsubdued lifestyle. The goodnews is,whether you are adventurous orlaid back, life really is interesting. Mylife is always taking twists and turnsand I am never bored.Six years agowe published the first issue ofBeyond 50, and with each passingyear the articles and people wefeature aremore fascinating as timemarches on.

At the age of 80 do you imagineyourself river rafting or zip liningwith a group of women? I think ifyou asked Kit or Margaret, the twoladies on our cover, they wouldnever havedreamedof it. But theseladies now enjoy life each and every day, and let me tell you, they are FUN! Theymet by chance, thanks to Kerri, who ownsthe Friendly Bus. She takes groups of seniors out foradventure and they love it and the seniors love her. The halfdozen women who went up to Oyama Zipline had a blastand are ready todo it again. Part of thewonderful experiencewas how great the staff up there was. They had nothing butgreat things to share with me. So now when you turn 80,maybe youwill be ready to join the“friendly bus”experience.

Something else that makes life interesting for those whoare 50+ and single is dating. I have enjoyed Darcy’sperspective and can relate to what it’s like. Relationships arechallenging at any age, but when you are more seasoned, ittakes an entirely different twist. Trying to find thepiece of thepuzzle that fits can be an interesting journey. If I had a dollarfor every unique dating experience I have had, Icould buy the“perfect man.”

As you read each of the articles you will benefitfrom facts and tidbits that are relevant to you and thiscommunity. Health, volunteering, travel and evenmusic. All of our interests vary and that is a good, andeven better is when we take the time to share ourinterests with others and vice versa. The best way tolearn about life is experience it, open up your mindand your heart and see what grabs you.

Beyond 50 is hosting its 2nd Annual Staying Alive Trade-show, on Saturday Nov. 10, at the Coast Capri Hotel, from 10-4pm. We invite each and every one of you to come down sayhello in person and see all the interesting exhibitors, whowillbe there to make your life a little better. It’s Beyond 50’s wayof helping our readers enjoy a day out, while learning somenew things that can improve your health.

On a final note I want to say thanks to Devon and Dallas,my two young men, who make life “very” interesting ona daily basis. Devon is now 18 and the next chapter in hisbook will be exciting. It’s his time to carve out his future andthenmake it happen. Dallas is also heading into anewphase;he is off to high school and is excited about what that will belike. Both my boys love life and I know, no matter what theychoose to do career wise, it will be interesting.

So far, we’ve covered how to meetpeople in public places and in groups, and the difference between using anagency like Magnetix, as opposed toonline dating sites.

There are days I wish this task waseasier.Whatever happened to good old-fashioned bumping into someone? Inour fast-paced world, it’s hard to get toknow your neighbour, let alone find asingle one. The boy/girl next doorstories we’ve all heard about are nowrelegated to a bygone era. It’s rare thesedays to meet a couple who met whileliving in the same neighbourhood.

Not long ago, I didmeet a single man, around my age, in my neighbourhood. He was from the prairies, as am I, so Ithought I’d invite him out for lunch.Afterall, we were both from the same part of

the world; we must have something incommon, right?

Hell no! And I do mean“hell.”Fire andbrimstone were prettymuch the topic ofthe day and I bit my tongue throughmost of the lunch. Finally, I could take nomore of his one-sided pontificating andcalled him on some of the downrightracist and bigoted statements. Hisresponse: “You’re cute when you getmad.” It was then I called for a doublemartini and the bill. Ok, so the boy nextdoor didn’t work out.Next!

Now I know some of you are thinking,at least it didn’t cost anything to find outhe wasn’t a good match.Yes, that is true. But seriously, I would have paid to getthat time back, as it truly was wasted. Iwas relieved when I was able to lock myfront door behind me. Fortunately, he

moved away... bullet dodged! In the last couple months, I’ve met a

few nice fellows through friends. Theyweren’t quite the boys next door, butthey did live within 15km of me. I hadsomething in common with all three ofthem. I went out on dates with two ofthem and the third never called to askme out. These scenarios usual involveawkward situations when your friendasks you what you thought - or worse, you yourself are interested and you haveto go sniffing around your friend to findout if the guy said anything about you tothem. It’s mildly embarrassing, but a gal’sgot to know!

And yes, I did go out on a datethrough Magnetix Dating Agency. Hewas funny, upbeat, family-oriented,smart, attractive, and more. Unfortun-ately, there was no real chemistry there, and that is one thing no one can control. However, I was also able togiveMagnetixfeedback on what I liked about him, andI let them know they were getting closerto what I wanted. The way I look at it, I’veprovided Magnetix with a bit moreammo for when they go hunting for me.

A friend of mine told me she’d heard Iwas using a dating agency and wascurious about how it was going. Sheasked me about cost and I told her thatfor me, it was cheaper to have someoneelse look for me, as my time is valuable. She wanted to know howmany dates I’dbeen on. I told her it wasn’t the numberof dates, but the quality of the dates thatcounted. I haven’t found my match yet,but I know he is out there and I trustMagnetix can find him for me.

Kit and Margaret are not your average 80-something-year-old women. Most would assume they have enjoyed their livesand are now settled into simple and uneventful golden years. That statement is so far from the truth - these two women arethe definition of “thrill seekers.” They live their lives to thefullest and are always looking for the next great adventure.

Kit, Margaret and eight other senior ladies have hooked upwith me. My name is Kerri and I am the owner/operator of theFriendly Bus. I have always had a soft spot for seniors, so Idecided to start a business where I take themon little day trips.

Recently, my group of gals started talking about bucketlists and things they wanted to do. Some of the ladies havevery adventurous lists. I figured if they wanted to try it, then Iwould grant them the opportunity. River raftingwas one of thetrips on last summer’s schedule, andmy friends said I was crazyto do that. I ended up with ten seniors ready to go down theAdams River. It was so exciting to see their faces as we reachedthe first rapid - you could tell someof themwere scared, butweall survived.

I actually think it sparked something in these ladies, andthey realized their need to live life and enjoy adventure evenmore. It wasn’t the craziest river you could go down, but

enough to get your adrenaline going, and the scenery wasamazing. Everyone was laughing, smiling, and proud ofthemselves after our rafting adventure, and ready formore.Thetopic on the bus ride home was what could we do next? Andthe general consensus was zip lining here we come!

The next thing I knew, I was driving these brave women upto Oyama Zipline. I was not sure who was more nervous, themor me? When we got to the first course, we were all reallyfreaked out on how high it was. The ladies nominated theirfearless leader (me) to go first. I walked over to the edge, andthought to myself,“I can’t do this.” I looked back and saw four

ladies in their 70s and 80s waiting for meto jump. So away I went. The adrenalinemade everyone a little shaky, but thesmile on everyone’s faces, was some-

thing I will never forget. They were soproud of themselves for jumping off thetower and especially of Margaret forconquering her fear of heights. By theend of the course, the ladies went offbackwards with no hands, laughing asthey flew down the course, and Kit even

went upside down part of the way. This was the first seniors’group to ride

the Oyama Zipline. The staff was absol-utelywonderful and Iwould recommendanyone to go and experience all theyhave to offer.

These women believe in living life’sadventures to the fullest. Margaret saysshe’s not going to learn to knit or sew ifshe doesn’t have to. Jan is off to Egypt inthe fall to ride a camel, while Kit’s alwaysup for the next adventure. Anna sayswe’re going skydiving next.

I am lucky. I draw such energy andinspiration from these women and knownow that as we age it doesn’t have to beabout knitting, baking and watching lifepass you by, but about experiencing allthat you can each and every day.

TheGoldmarket:The last five years has seen a 150 per centincrease in the value of gold. A piece of 14K gold weighing thesame as a penny would be worth nearly $50 at current prices. This boom has lead tomany new buyers entering the industry. How can you protect yourself and realize the best return whenselling your unwanted gold?

Get several quotes: Firstly, not all gold buyers are payingthe same. It’s best to get several offers and never let yourself bepressured to sell immediately. We advise avoiding hotel or“goldparty”buyersdueto thehighpressure tactics sometimesused. If youmust go,make sure to have several comparison quotes in advance.

Reputable buyers will pay for both the gold AND thediamonds - be cautious of anyone who offers to remove thediamonds so they can buy just the gold. Loose gemstonesare extremely difficult to resell and you may destroy thefinished value of a piece by taking it apart.

Sell with safety: Secondly, treat gold like cash. You’d nevermail cash so you shouldn’t mail gold. You’ll often find that themail “insurance”being offered is limited to $100,which may befar less than its worth. Once your jewelry is in themail you’re atrisk - you haven’t been paid and you don’t have your gold.

The companies you deal with should operate a storefront, be

licensed and have regularoperating hours. They should pay you in cash, immediately, atthe time of sale. This avoids the bad cheque problem, whichplagued clients of a Kelowna hotel buyer. These steps helpprotect you by putting the transaction firmly in your control:you can get competing quotes, attend when it’s convenient, and get paid in safety.

How it works: Bring your items to the buyer. Standard proce-dure is to sort the gold into karat ranges (gold has differentpurity marked by Karat ratings). The buyer may run tests todetermine if the gold and/or any diamonds are real. After weigh-ing,a tentative offerwould be extended to purchase. If the offeris accepted, the legitimate buyers will need a piece of photo IDto comply with municipal bylaws. A purchase document is

written, payment is made and you canleave possibly hundreds or thousands ofdollars richer.

This past June, Laurel D’Andreaand I discussed the possibility ofrunning a column on WelcometoKelowna.com that would act as aplatform for certain city groupsaffiliated with the battle againstcancer.

After a little brainstorming, werealizedwhat the community reallyneeds is an online place for allpeople who have been affected bythedisease. We developed CreatingCourage with the thought that itwould be used as a platform for sharing and discussionamong those who are battling or have battled cancer. Butthat’s not all. We also wanted to open the platform to thosewho have stood by as a loved one fought, whether the out-come was good or bad.

Creating Courage is about creating a community forEVERYONE who has had their heart touched by cancer.Whether it’s a woman buying her first wig, or a daughter whohelped feed her father in the hospital. Be it a young man with

skin cancer, or a gentleman whowas the source of laughter for afriend with prostate cancer, thereis room for every story and everyanecdote.

By giving people a voice and aplace to share their laughter andtheir heartache, we hope tostrengthen and build our lovedones, neighbours, and strangers. We believe in ourselves, and we

believe in you. Share, support, and encourage oneanother and we can build a better community for all.

Creating Courage can be found every week on WelcometoKelowna.com under the Columns header.

People often ask me,“Should I have this done?” If I think theprocedure is reasonable, the risks aremodest, and the patient isrealistic about theprocess, I ask them,“Howbaddoes itmake youfeel, and howmuch better would you feel if it were changed?”

The body and the mind work together, and our hope is thathelping the body will help the mind. For example, someof ourcoolsculpting patients go back to the gym with their newbodies and for the first time are able to work out withoutshame.Their workouts burn calories, and instead of continuingto spiral down into depression and inaction, they begin to loseweight and feel better. After a laser peel or botox/fillerinjections, a more youthful appearance can generate newconfidence and improve spirits. Some people are able tomakeall kinds of lifestyle changes, such as getting married ordivorced, finding a new boyfriend,or taking amajor career risk. After a hair transplant, men may feel better on their jobs andfeel more attractive to the opposite sex. The combination ofimproved appearance, new confidence, and the reactions ofother people can contribute to positive changes in a patient’s life.

But there’s another side to the story. For example, if after fatremoval treatments you continue lifelong bad eating habits anddo not perform any significant exercise, you will gain weight. On the emotional side, a new body image has the potential to

force you to face difficult issues, such as changes in sexualrelationships or less-than-supportive responses from friendsand family. People may treat you differently after the surgery, and there is the occasional family member or friend who willresent you for looking and feeling better. A physician’s hope isthat the improvementswill contribute to abetter emotional lifefor the patient.

I also try to point out tomy patients that I cannotmake theirlives better by performing a specific treatment. Getting Botoxinjections or having some fat removed will not make yourfailing marriage better, nor will it get you that perfect job youalwayswanted. However, these kinds of treatments can give usthe energy and self-confidence to reach out and achieve thosegoals we once thought were impossible.

After breast surgery many women do not want to facefurther surgery. Today about 50% to 60% of women of all agesprefer to wear an external prosthesis. This is a breast formmedically designed in many shapes, sizes, contours andtextures and approximates the natural drape and weight thenatural breast. It is worn inside a proper fitting Bra which is

essential to the patients overall comfort and confidence.Fair Pharmacare in BC assists women with finances

after a mastectomy. Both the prosthesis and 2 bras areeligible on the first fitting. Prosthesis are usually fitted within6-8 weeks after surgery. The 2 bras are eligible only once andmust be chosen within 6 months of surgery – the prosthesiswill continue to be eligible every 2 years as desired. Many ladies also have Extended Health Care which will

provide additional funds to the Pharmacare coverage. It is the care & compassion of trained Mastectomy Fitters

who make the fitting process a positive one during a difficulttime. Women are so pleased when they realize howcomfortable they are, and how natural the prosthesisLooks and feels. Wepromise you… itwill pass theHUGTEST!

As soonas I entered the“sick room,”thelittle cat that had caught my attentionjumped into my arms from the floor. She started purring and snuggling, andI knew instantly that she was cominghomewithme. Myhusband and I fell inlove with this new addition to ourfamily.Wenamedher Lucy, because shewas a true comedian and made uslaugh with her playful antics and funnyfacial expressions. She recovered quicklyfrom her virus and started to thriveimmediately in her new environment.

A few days after we brought herhome, Lucy jumped up on the sofa tosnuggle, crawling onto my chest, andtucking her head under my bathrobe. Then, suddenly, andwithoutwarning, shepoppedherheadup, looked straight intomy eyes, jumped on my right breast, and started licking and pawing madly. health matters

A month after tragically losing our first pet, my husbandand I found ourselves searching through the local SPCAshelter. Wewere late bloomerswhen it came topet ownership, but from the time we first became “surrogate parents,” therewas no looking back. Although we were deeply grieving theloss of our beautiful cat, Stewie, we decided to take a leap offaith and open our hearts and home once again.

I’ve often heard that we don’t choose our pets, they choose us.This seemed to be the case for me, as I kept seeing this little

striped tabby each time I wandered through the shelter. This cat would watch me through the glass partition

and jump on the ledge walking alongside me,chatting through thewindow.A fewdays later

a staff member allowed me to go in to see

health mattersweeks later with leukemia. And so myjourney began.

I have since learned of many storiesin which both cats and dogs have beenable to detect cancer because of theirkeen sense of smell. It is said that theywill often lick and dig in an attempt toremove the tumor from the unsuspect-ing patient. Just for the record,Lucy hasnever exhibited behaviour like that again. Some cats are lickers but Lucy is not. Infact, she prefers to “bite the hand thatfeeds her” rather than lick it, especiallywhen shewants to get her point across. She is feisty, independent, and affection-ate on her terms only. She is also headover heals in lovewithmy husband, butthat’s another story.

My breast cancer would have beendetected three weeks later, as I wasscheduled to have my routine annualmammogram. Lucy just sped up that

process with her own version of a “catscan!”

I amstill herebecauseof the expertiseof all the medical professionals whohave cared for me, as well as, state-of-the-art procedures and treatments thathave been made available to me as Ibattle cancer. I have a strong and stead-fast support group of family andfriends, who constantly remindmeof allthe interesting things that life brings. And I am living proof that our pets oftenprovide us with much needed comfort,

diversion, and affection. And some-times they even help save our lives.

So, in my household,we turn a blindeye when Lucy occasionally uses anupholstered chair as a scratch post, andwe take delight in spoiling her rotten. She makes life interesting every dayand I am thankful that she “chose” us. Ihave no doubt that she was meant tocome into our lives when she did andshe is our miracle cat. I am NOT a certi-fied“crazy cat lady,”but is it any wonderthat I love Lucy?

health matters

Have you ever heard a comment that makes you think,“now THAT’S interesting!” I was out golfing last week, andthrough the usual chitchat while walking to find my ball (no,I am NOT a scratch golfer!), one of my fellow players madesuch a comment. He asked me what I did for a living. I toldhim I’m a chiropractor. His response was,“Awesome,my backis sore! Can I just lay down here and you can crack me?” Ithought,“Interesting comment...”

When I was younger, my dad used to see a chiropractor. From what I remember, he would go in with a sore lowerback, and after an adjustment or two, the pain was reducedconsiderably. Chiropractic works fabulously for low back pain.

I know this from my own personal experience, havingbeen in two car accidents within a week of each other. Myback hurt so much I couldn’t sit in class any longer. I finallywent to see a chiropractor, andwithin a few visits could sitcomfortably again. Soonafter, life returned tonormal.Iwas soimpressed with the results, I started looking into chiropracticas a career.

As I looked into chiropractic career, I found it interestingthat chiropractic can help with a lot more than just low backpain (but that’s beyond the scope of this article). On its mostbasic level, chiropractic helps with the alignment andmotionof the joints... any joints! At the spine, though, this helpsremove pressure and irritation of the nerves.

Because of the variety of things chiropractic can helpwith,17 years in practice is still interesting! Many of the patients Isee in a day aren’t suffering from low back pain. They cometo see me on a“wellness”basis. Some find they sleep better. Some notice they have less digestive issues. Others have

stronger immune systems, so they get sick less frequently. And others just have less aches and pains from dailyactivities. How? By keeping the nerve system free and clearfrom interference.

Also, after 17 years, life is still interesting because ofpeople’s comments when they find out I’m a chiropractor.“I’m glad I don’t need you.” “I have a sore back. Can youworkon me right here?” Makes me wonder if life would be evenmore interesting as proctologist...

People who are edentulous aremissing important parts oftheir bodies - 32 to be exact. They are physically impaired, according to theWorldHealthOrganization.Losing your teethoften has devastating consequences.

People without teeth avoid eating a lot of healthy foods;particularly fruit, vegetables and other dietary fibres. They areforced to eatmore processed foods that are of less nutritionalvalue. This is particularly harmful for those vulnerable tomalnutrition.

Without teeth their faces sag, lips cave in and their nosesbecome closer to their chins, making them appear older.Theyhesitate to smile and are often perceived to be unfriendly, grumpy or mad. Many will not eat in public, leading to socialisolation, loneliness and depression. They are often ashamedand embarrassed by their condition and this lowers theirconfidence, self-esteem,andmakes their life less enjoyable.

If you are missing your teeth you are not alone.A recentsurvey by Health Canada found one in five adults from age60-79 were missing all of their teeth; the technical term is“edentulism.”

Surprisingly, the number of people wearing dentures is onthe rise. Advances in dentistry have helped reduce thepercentage of people requiring dentures from50% in 1990 toonly 20% in 2009. However, the number of people “beyond5O”has almost doubled since 1990 and represents one of thefastest growing groups in Canadian society.

In “A Portrait of Seniors in Canada,” released by StatisticsCanada,Canadians aged65 to 74 increased from1.5million to2.2 million between 1981 and 2005, and the number isanticipated to be 4.8 million by 2031,and 9.8 million by 2036.

Teeth are most often lost or extracted due to the effect oftwo dental diseases - Periodontal Disease and Dental Caries. These diseases are slow to progress and are cumulative innature, so that a disproportional number of elderly areaffected.

For those unfortunate enough to lose all of their teeth, there is some good news. Dental implants can help solvemany of the problems of dentures. Dental implants have beenused to replace teeth and secure dentures for over 40 years. Itis quite surprising that somanypeoplehavenever evenheard

of dental implants and needlessly struggling with problemdentures.

Traditionally, false teeth were held in only by suction andsupported only by the soft tissues of your mouth. They movewhenyoubite on themandcan fall outwhenyou smile, laughor sneeze.Dental implants are like root replacements. They areplaced in your jawbone and the denture is attached to them.Because the dental implants function like the natural roots, the dentures feel very much like your natural teeth did.

Now,a unique, cost-efficient dental implant procedure canbe one of the fastest ways to replace your dentures. A fixeddenture consists of a dental implant bridge that is supportedby four or more dental implants. It can often be done in asingleday,so that younever have togowithout teeth.Patientswho have received this treatment say they feel a renewedsense of confidence, enjoy an improved quality of life, andhave regained the ability to eat and taste the foods they love.

As with most things, you don’t really miss something untilit’s gone. Fortunately, there are great options available toreplace the teeth that you have lost.

DR. DUNCAN CHAMBERS is a Board CertifiedDental Specialist in replacingmissing teeth. He hasover 20 years experience in creating comfortabledentures, stabilizing dentures with implants andmaking fixed dentures.

For the past six yearswe have used this depart-ment to recognize everydaypeoplewhomake adifference.Ourcommunity is overflowingwith peoplewhocontribute somuch, whether it be their time, talentorresources. Angels Among Us was created to showcase thoseindividuals for all that they do.

It’s our way of saying “thank-you” for sharing, “thank-you”for caring, but most of all, “thank you” for wanting to giveback. For now Iwant to thank all of you in advance for whatyou are about to do.

The TELUS Community Ambassadors, along with Beyond50, have partnered for several years on a project that is nearand dear to my heart. Each winter we do what we can tosupport the homeless. It’s called “Care for Our Community.”The concept is simple; we collect gently used clothing fromthe community, friends, family and coworkers and we godown to City Park and hand them out.TheTELUS CommunityAmbassadors also provide funding and volunteers at theKelowna Gospel Mission on that day. We work with theamazing kitchen staff at KGM to prepare and serve lunch.

Here iswhatweneed fromyou. Gothroughyourclosetsandcall us topick upanyof the following items:(men&women)

• Jeans • Coats• Sweatshirts or sweaters • Socks•Warm clothing - long johns, long sleeve t-shirts• Toques & gloves • Used backpacks

Once they’re ready, call us and we will pick them up so wecan give them out to those in need. The other option is tocome down and drop your items off on the day of the event.Thedate for this year’s event is Saturday,November24. Wewillbe setting up at 9amandwill be there until 1pm. We set up atthe entrance to the parking lot. Youwill see our vehicles, tablesand friendly volunteers having fun and doing good things.

Contact info: Laurel 250-878-9194 or via email [email protected]

We always contact the agencies who provide assistance tothose needing help, so they can let their clients know we willbe out in the park on that day and to come down and getwhat they need. If we have anything leftover, we donate theitems to thrift stores that support the non-profit sector.

Lastly, thanks very much for beingmy angels for this issue. If each of us does a little bit the world really is a better place.

If you are looking for a purposefulholiday that provides an opportunity tocontribute positive change in the worldand to interact with local people andtheir culture, consider joining a Habitatfor Humanity Global Village build.

Recently, my wife Pat and our friend,Linda Frandsen, along with nine otherCanadians from PEI to White Rock, B.C.,participated in a two-week build inSanta Fe, Argentina. For Pat and I, it wasour fifth build. Our other builds havebeen primarily in Central America so wecould practice our Spanish, but thereare build opportunities available almostanywhere in the world. One of theunexpected pleasures of a Habitat build

is befriending interesting, like-mindedteam members with whom you canshare the experience.

No construction experience isnecessary; however, you should be ingood health. The most importantattributes are an open mind, a flexibleand team-oriented attitude, and a senseof humour. As Linda said: “I enjoytravelling and have been trying to learnSpanish forever, so last year when I

heard about this Habitat trip toArgentina, I was interested. I liked the

idea of a purposeful holiday andmeeting and working with families in anon-tourist setting. I didn’t want tofundraise, or collect supplies, but didn’tknow if I had any skills to offer, as I hadnever taken ‘House Construction 101!’ Ifound the most important skills were tobe respectful and adaptable.”

2007, Pat had wondered whethershe’d be able to handle it physi-cally, but it hasn’t been a concern,as there are so many differentjobs on a worksite - shoveling, bucket brigades, tying rebar, painting, entertaining the neigh-bourhood kids, mixing cement, etc.The median age of our Argentinateam was 59 and Nestor (one ofthe homeowners) said, “You guysreally worked hard for old people.”Guess it didn’t translate too wellfrom the Spanish...

HFH is for the working poor. Toqualify, families usually need tohave at least one child, be willingto contribute significant sweatequity and be able to afford asmall, 10-12-year no-interest mortgage payment. TheArgentina affiliate offers families creative programs that wehadn’t seen on our previous builds, such as assisted rentaland renovation programs, and they also provide financial andlegal literacy training for the families. In rural areas, HFHAbuilds “seed homes” in stages and these can be expanded bythe owners once they can afford it.

Besides providing simple, decent, affordable housing, HFH

is about building community, goodcitizenship and a safe haven forchildren to live in and attend school.

Upon completion of our build, weshared food, participated in a closingceremony and then said our goodbyesto the families and the local Habitatworkers. We had many experiences toreflect on during our bus ride back toBuenos Aires.

The following day, we travelled toan estancia ‘Los Dos Hermanos’ for twodays of relaxation. We went horsebackriding, swimming, rested in hammocks4

and enjoyed each other’s company. The Argentine cuisinewas fabulous and any weight lost during the build wasquickly replaced! Most of our group took extra time to betourists, exploring the spectacular scenery and experiencingthe unique culture (including the tango!). Buenos Aires was amust see with side trips to Mendoza, Cordoba andneighbouring Uruguay.

Each build is unique and has its own lifelong memories. Our team members continue to share pictures and plans forthe future. We are already contemplating our next culturaladventure in 2013 in a country we have yet to visit.

Saint Augustine once said, “TheWorld is a book, and those who do nottravel read only a page.” Those dedi-cated to a lifestyle of continued learn-ing, personal health, and general well-being are definitely not content to stayon the samepage. Not only is travel oneof the few activities that is interestingbefore, during and after the event, it isgood for your health, too. For thosepeople, travel is essential.

At the risk of oversimplification, quality of life as you age is directlyrelated to quality of health.Goodhealthmeans sound mind and useful body.Maintaining good health means exer-cising and stretching mind and body tokeep them fit andworking, plus feedingboth the right materials to make theground fertile for growth. Travel canhelp provide all these things.Travel is good for the brain. It allows

the brain a chance to stretch and growby constantly being challenged by theunfamiliar. The brain is presented withnewperspectives, thereby creating newconnections. ience by trying new foods, listeningto different music, and seeingvaried landscapes. All of thesestretch and enhance the brain.

A lifestyle that incorpor-ates constant learningkeeps life interesting, and is also importantto good health .Traveling beyond thefamiliar and into thegreaterworld providesa source of educationthat cannot be found else-where.Yougain firsthand know-ledge of economy, politics, history, geography and sociology.

Travel allows you to truly live in themoment. When the packing and plan-ning is done and you hit the road todiscovery, leaving the familiar in therearview mirror, you truly are in thezone. There is so much new stimuliforcing you to use your brain in newand unfamiliar ways, that you truly areliving in the here and now - somethingthat is very good for your sense of well-being.

Living in the moment is great forthe body as well. Centering on the

here andnow releases the stressesof daily life and ongoing

concerns, allowing thebody to relax.Reducingstress has been linkedwith improvedbloodpressure, increasedc o n c e n t r a t i o n ,reduction of head-aches, and easing of

digestive disorders. But part of the joy in

travel is in the whole process. You research destinations, you planyour itinerary, you learn how peoplethere work, live and play, and this is allbefore you leave home. Then there isthe experience of the joy of travel anddiscovery itself. And after, you continueto relive the experience by sharing itwith your loved ones through storiesand pictures. It is an investment thatkeeps on giving. That is what makestraveling so interesting.

Travel is also an ambassador to worldpeace. As the great author Mark Twain

once said, “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness.” Everytime you connect with people who liveand work in different countries, cultures,or even neighborhoods, you make aconnection. And when you increaseconnections between people, youincrease understanding. And when youincrease understanding, the worldbecomes a smaller and more peacefulplace. Making the world a better placeis definitely conducive to feeling goodabout yourself, which is of course goodfor your health.

So what are you waiting for? Travel -it’s interesting and good for you!

That is the unofficial motto of theWhite Sails Chorus, part of SweetAdelines International, based here inKelowna. They are a group of approx-imately 25 women, who sing four-partharmony - and love it!

“I have always enjoyed singing,”sayschorus member Margaret Brunsden,“but never had an outlet for it until Ijoined the White Sails. This isn’t juststanding in front of an audience, hold-ing a music book - this is entertainingand engaging the audience; makingthem laugh - ormaybe cry - but provid-ing a whole experience that isn’t easilyforgotten.”Margaret has been singingwith the chorus for nearly 16 years, andhas discovered first-hand how it hasmade her life more interesting.

“There are huge opportunities forpersonal improvement - not just insinging technique and musical know-ledge, but in management skills, self-confidence, and even health.”

Margaret explains that each week, the chorus works through differentexercises to improvebreath control andvocal production, and that the know-ledgeable music team is always thereto offer assistance when necessary.

Fortunately for many of the members, the ability to read music is NOT arequirement, as “learning tracks”(usually in mp3 format) are provided toassist in memorizing each song.

And the other benefits? As with anyorganization, there is a managementteam to ensure the smooth running ofthegroup, and the chorusmembers taketheir turn with record-keeping, fund-raising,and also the social activities thatmake this hobby even more fun.Margaret also notes that it’s hard to beshy when you are singing - and that it’shard to sing with poor posture! Theirregular physical warm-ups are designedto strengthen the body core andimprove posture - and those benefitsare carried into everyday life.

“It’s the performing!” says DebrahThiessen, another chorus member.“That’s what makes my life moreinteresting! We recently put on aStrawberry Tea at the BenvoulinHeritage Church Hall and it was somuch fun! We had a ‘special guest’ (theQueen!) and our audience loved it.Weperform throughout the community asoften as we can, and had a fabuloustime doing ‘Singing Valentines’ back in

February. Some of our ‘victims’ seemed embarrassed at first, but you could tell how special it was for them to know thattheir husband, wife or sweetheart had taken the time to planahead. And as we presented them with a red carnation and acard, one or two of the big tough guys got quite teary-eyed.”

TheWhite Sails Chorus has two musical directors - BettinaGarry and Bev Swan. They both enjoy directing, but neitherwants to give up singing, so they take turns. Bettina says:“Since the chorus was founded in 1972,we have sung underthe direction of six women and two men, in an amazingselection of flamboyant fabrics, colours, ruffles, and sequins. Our numbers on stage have hovered around25,andour ageshave ranged from 12 to 73.We have organized our fair shareof shows and fundraisers. We have sung our fair share oftelegrams, and Christmas carolled our way through the mosthectic time of the year.We have laughed, cried, argued, andmade up. We have welcomed strangers into our midst andwaved goodbye to good friends. And through it all we havenever stopped singing. At 40 years ‘young’this year,we are inour prime - vibrant, lively, and going for it!”

“Rann Berry and the One Hit Wonders” is the ultimatetribute to those wonderful and memorable songs that youforgot you love! The show pays tribute to that magical time

between 1965 to 1975 when bands and song-writers were free to express themselves, both musically and idealistically.

The songs in this show are all con-sidered to be “One Hit Wonders,” which

means they were the single BIG hit for eachband or artist, or the song they are primarily

known for. Due to the popularity of these hitsback then, many of these songs were sub-sequently covered by major artists such as GlennCampbell, Tom Jones, and even Elvis.

Rann Berry grew up with these songs, and wasinfluenced by each and every one chosen for the

show. “This music is what made me want to become amusician,” says Berry. The idea for the show has beenyears in the making. As Berry explains, “I was looking foran original idea for a show that would feature musicfrom the era I grew up in, and I wanted the show tooffer lots of variety.”

After a number of trips to Las Vegas to see shows like“Jersey Boys” and a great tribute program called the“Beatles Show,” an idea began to emerge. Creating a showdedicated to one hit wonders was the answer, and a

musical journey back to the 60s and 70s that features songsthat so many of us love and remember, began to take shape.“For so many of us this music is the soundtrack of our youth,”says Berry.

Over two years have been spent carefully choosing thespecific songs that Berry thought would resonate best withan audience. The next step was to enlist the help of long timefriend and fellow musician Justin Glibbery to act as musicaldirector on the project. Justin’s daunting task included

creating all the customized musicalcharts for the show. “The whole bandagrees that Justin did an amazing jobon the charts,” Berry states.

Rehearsals began in early 2012. “Themusic is faithfully reproduced in itsoriginal form and we’re all having sucha great time working on this. They justdon’t write songs like these anymore”say’s Berry. The show is presented as aVegas-style musical tribute featuringbeautiful dancers and a full eight-piece

show band, that includes a four-piecehorn section.

The One Hit Wonders Show premieredto a full house at the Kelowna CommunityTheatre on August 10. The night endedwith two standing ovations. “It’s a hit,”declares theatre manager Randy Zahara,“ A must see show!”

The One Hit Wonders Encore perform-ance returns Friday, September 21, tothe Kelowna Community Theatre incelebration of the theater ’s 50th

anniversary. Next stop is the Cleland Theatre in

Penticton on Saturday, November 10,and then The Vernon and DistrictPerforming Arts Centre on Saturday,November 24. After these shows, Berryplans to take the show on the road.
