18 December 2017 - Christmas gifts for local children in need

PC Ashley Green from Bexleyheath Police Station made his ‘presents’ felt last week (15 December) when he delivered more than 600 gifts donated as part of the annual Met Police Christmas Tree appeal.

The gifts, donated by local people, are for children aged from one-week to 17-years-old and benefit those in need across all the borough.

The presents were picked up and delivered to the Civic Offices with help from the local Amazon depot who also donated a pile of huge pile of gifts for the campaign

Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Cllr Philip Read said; “This is a great campaign and it is always a delight to welcome our Police partners in with their sacks full of presents at this time of year! The generosity of local people and businesses will help to make what could be a difficult Christmas that bit brighter. I’d also like to than Amazon for their time and their very generous donations to this really worthwhile cause.”

PC Green said, “It is humbling to see the generosity from the residents and businesses around the borough coming together for this cause and an honour to be a part of it.”

The presents will be distributed by staff in the Children’s Social Care Team over the next few days.

15 December 2017 - Bus route 96 to run to Darent Valley Hospital From Saturday 16 December the 96 bus route will be re-routed to serve Darent Valley Hospital and will use part of the Fastrack Bus Rapid Transit system between Dartford and Bluewater. The changes come as a result of a concerted campaign by London Borough of Bexley to improve transport links to and from the borough to essential health services. As well as improving reliability, this change improves access to Darent Valley Hospital, particularly for people in the Welling and Bexleyheath areas who will no longer need to change buses in Dartford. The Leader of Bexley Council, Cllr Teresa O’Neill OBE said, “I am delighted that Bexley residents will now be able to access a faster, more direct bus route to Darent Valley Hospital and that TfL have listened and responded to our calls for this change. It is an important step forward in our plans to improve transport connections and services in the borough.” The 96 bus route currently runs between Woolwich and Bluewater shopping centre via Plumstead, Welling, Bexleyheath, Crayford and Dartford. Between Dartford, East Hill and Bluewater, buses will now run via Park Road, Princes Road, the Fastrack system, Darent Valley Hospital (serving the bus stops near the hospital entrance) and then back on to the Fastrack system. There is no change to the frequency or to the other bus stops served. Apart from serving the hospital, route 96 will continue to run non-stop between Dartford town centre and Bluewater. It will no longer take an alternative route during periods of heavy traffic. A map of the revised route can be found at tfl.gov.uk/PermBusChanges 18 December 2017 - Hall Place Gardens high horticultural standards confirmed in mystery shop Hall Place House and Gardens’ Green Flag status was confirmed with a top rating, following a mystery shopper visit earlier this month (2 December). The mystery shopper - a Judge from the international Green Flag Award Scheme - spent time on site observing its horticultural qualities, health and safety and cleanliness standards, welcoming appeal, presentation and accessibility. In her comments, the Judge said that Hall Place offered ‘a great array of examples of different horticultural techniques’ and went on to say she ‘loved the model gardens’ and that ‘one can glean a great deal of information from the site and replicate ideas at home.’ The Judge concluded the site meets the award scheme’s high standards, maintaining its status as one of the very best parks in the UK. Cllr Peter Craske, Cabinet Member for Community Safety, Environment and Leisure, said: “Since the grounds came back under Council control in April the Garden’s team have worked tirelessly to bring the gardens back up to a very high standard. The judge’s comments reflect their dedication and hard work, and I’d like to thank them for all they do to keep this beautiful site maintained and cultivated.” The Green Flag Award is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible environmental standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent visitor facilities.

19 December 2017 - Just one year to go for the Elizabeth line

The final countdown to the start of new Elizabeth line services at Abbey Wood has begun. In just one year’s time, residents in Bexley borough will see new links from Abbey Wood station, with a train every five minutes on the new line.

Elizabeth line services are opening in stages. Initially Elizabeth line trains will run between Abbey Wood and Paddington via Canary Wharf, the City and the West End. The full route will then open in December 2019, with direct trains from Abbey Wood to Paddington, Heathrow or Reading.

The striking new station building at Abbey Wood opened to Southeastern passengers at the end of October this year and is one of the first of the ten new Elizabeth line stations to open. Some have called it the ‘jewel in the crown’ of the surface stations on the line. London Borough of Bexley, partnering with Royal Borough of Greenwich, TfL and Crossrail, is working now to provide a better quality public realm – a proper setting for that ‘jewel’. Included in the design is a new ‘cycle hub’ – hundreds of bike parking spaces – to encourage cycling to the new station. TfL have plans for a new Bexleyheath to Abbey Wood bus route and more buses on existing routes, ready when the Elizabeth line services start.

Bexley Council is also working with Royal Borough of Greenwich and Peabody on improvements along Harrow Manorway, upgrading the area between the flyover at Abbey Wood station and Eastern Way. Improvements include the creation of a boulevard street layout with new trees and plants, as well as better open spaces and seating. New bus lanes will improve public transport journey times.

The Leader of Bexley Council, Cllr Teresa O’Neill OBE said, “The opening of the new station at Abbey Wood in October was a great step forward towards achieving the vision for Abbey Wood and South Thamesmead. The arrival of the new Elizabeth line in just twelve months’ time is really good news for all of Bexley’s residents and businesses, especially the people who will benefit from the long term regeneration of this area.”

For more information on the public realm improvements at Abbey Wood station and the works on Harrow Manorway go to www.yourabbeywood.co.uk or email [email protected] More detailed information on the Crossrail project and the work to deliver the Elizabeth line can be found at www.crossrail.co.uk

19 December 2017 - Transforming Erith

Residents will start to see evidence of works commencing at Erith Station and the Carnegie building. Site signage is being posted in preparation for the start of improvements works which begin in early January 2018. .

These improvement works will include redesigning the public space to create better pedestrian, cycling and vehicle access and upgrading the station entrance with better signage and planting making the area more attractive. Public seating, lighting and cycle stands will also be added.

Scaffolding has been erected on the Carnegie building and works to start cleaning the building will begin this week.

Cllr Linda Bailey, Bexley’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Growth said: “Erith is one of the main locations we expect to benefit from our ambitious growth strategy for the borough, with an ongoing programme of regeneration aimed at developing the area into a thriving riverside community. We have big aspirations for the town and we are starting to see them become a reality”.

The improvements in Erith are being funded by London Borough of Bexley and partners, including the Mayor of London. The aim is to create an active town centre that can make the most of Erith’s unique setting by the River Thames.

20 December 2017 - Central Library, Bexleyheath temporary closure

Central Library, Bexleyheath will close from 5.30pm on 3 January 2018 until 1 February for essential improvement works and the installation of a new Changing Places toilet, the first of its kind in the borough.

Changing Places provide people with profound and multiple learning disabilities, as well people with other physical disabilities, with a safe place with extra equipment and space to allow them to use toilets comfortably. The new Changing Places room will have external access from Royal Oak Road.

Other works in the library will include minor refurbishment to improve facilities, provide bigger meeting rooms and refresh the look and feel of the library.

The closure will also provide the opportunity to address some current drainage issues.

Cabinet Member for Community Safety, Environment and Leisure, Cllr Peter Craske said; “Central Library is our flagship library and, although we know it will be missed during these works, I’m sure users would agree that it is for a very good reason. Having a new Changing Places space in our main town centre is a great idea and will benefit visitors not only to the library but to our town centre. It would be remiss of us not to take the time during the closure to give the building a bit of a freshen up! Luckily it will be open and looking good in time for our first ever book festival in February.”

The library will re-open at 9:30am on Thursday 1 February 2018. Welling Library will be open on Sunday from 10am to 1pm during the closure.

While the library is closed all items borrowed from Central Library can be returned to any Council Library in Bexley, renewed by telephone on 020 8303 7777 or online at www.bexley.gov.uk/libraries

The nearest Council Library to Central is Welling Library, Townley Road, Bexleyheath, DA6 7HJ. Opening hours for this and all Bexley Libraries can be found on our Bexley Libraries website https://arena.yourlondonlibrary.net/web/bexley/home

BookBuzz, Bexley’s first book festival will take place across the borough from 10 - 24 February.

21 December 2017 - Christmas time at Blackfen Library Blackfen Community Library’s Christmas event at the end of November saw over 700 people visit the library in one day! While there they were able to see the Christmas choir, meet some Christmas characters and enjoy a visit from Father Christmas and his elves who gave presents to 250 children, before the Mayor of Bexley, Cllr Peter Reader turned on the Blackfen Christmas Lights.

Children and adults are also invited to come along to the Library on Christmas Eve from 4pm-5pm to sing carols and enjoy festive treats while taking part in an interactive telling of the Christmas Story. Cabinet Member for Community Safety, Environment and Leisure, Cllr Peter Craske said; “Blackfen is a fantastic example of a community library really reaching out to local people in a number of different ways and welcoming them in. They run lots of different clubs and activities for all ages, as well as having a great café. Since opening in April 2016 the Library, run so ably by the New Generation Church, has gone from strength to strength.”

Over 70 people were welcomed in to enjoy a fish and chip dinner, bingo, a quiz, live music from a local band, a singalong and even a magician. Everyone who attended was invited to Blackfen Library’s monthly Freedom Group and coffee mornings. The library is open 10am-5pm Tuesday to Friday and 9am-5pm on Saturdays, having increased opening hours by one third since becoming a community-run library. 22 December 2017 - Top Team from Thames estuary Growth Commission visit Bexley

Bexley welcomed a team from the Thames Estuary 2050 Growth Commission this week (19 December), led by its recently appointed Chairman, Sir John Armitt CBE and Vice-Chairman, Professor Sadie Morgan. Arriving at the new Abbey Wood Station, the group were taken on a tour of significant locations in the north of the borough, including the Thamesmead Housing Zone and the proposed site of Bexley’s proposed Place and Making Institute. They then moved on to Belvedere and Erith. At the Civic Offices, Bexleyheath, Council representatives gave the team an update on Bexley’s plans for growth and the work of the C2E Alliance, of which Bexley is a member and that is pressing for the Elizabeth Line to be extended to Ebbsfleet.

The visit took place on the day that the Commission announced its priorities, which include equipping people with the right skills and providing high quality housing.

Sir John was recently appointed as the Commission’s new Chair and visited Bexley with his team to outline the Commission’s areas of focus for the coming months. These include assessing the case for proposed investments, including further river crossings and extending the Elizabeth Line to Ebbsfleet. Council Leader Cllr Teresa O’Neill OBE said: “We were delighted to welcome Sir John, Professor Morgan and their colleagues to the borough and for the opportunity to share our thinking about the economic potential of the Thames Estuary. We share the Commission’s vision of equipping people with the right skills and providing high quality housing and its support for the infrastructure we need to make this happen will be key to our plans”.

The Commission’s final report, which will lay out its recommendations to government, will be published in spring 2018.
