Welcome to Bewl Valley Sailing ClubBewl Valley SailingClub prides itself on being a very friendly club extending awarmwelcometomembers, theirguestsandvisitingsailors fromtheSouthEastandfurtherafield.Throughouttheyearwehaveanactivesailingprogrammewithclubracingmostweekends,openmeetingsthroughtheyearandcruisingonover700acresofwateronthebordersofKentandSussex.Withaveryactivetrainingschoolandvariedsocialprogrammetoo,thereisneveradullmoment,theclubisconstantlybuzzing.
Althoughtheclubwasfounded in1967activesailingwasnotpossibleuntil1977.Todayover30yearslaterwehavesome1200membersofallages,sailingawiderangeofboatsfromoutandoutracers,tothosethatprefertojustpotter.BewlValleySailingClub is adinghyandwindsurfer sailingclub.Ouraim is topromote sailingfordinghyandboardsailorsandprovidehighqualitytraininganddevelopmentformembersfrombeginnerstothehighestlevelsofsailing.Someofoursailorsgoontocompetenationallyandinternationally.
Beinganaturalreservoirthereiswonderfulsceneryandawiderangeofwildlife–allthisinadditiontosuperbsailingonthelargestareaofinlandwaterinSouthEastEngland.
Withallthelatestfacilities,ourclubhouseistheperfectplacetomeetfellowsailorsandtakeinthestunningviewsofthereservoir.

The ClubhouseTheclubhouseisadelightfulandcomfortablepurpose-builtfacilitywheremembersliketospendtimewhentheyarenotoutenjoyingthemselvesoutonthewater.
Upstairs there is a bar and galley serving hot food on Saturdays and Sundaysthroughout theyearandonWednesdayevenings fromMay toSeptember. Themenu isextensiveandvariedandoffershotandcold food ranging from snackfavouritesallthewaythroughtodeliciousmealsfromthespecialsboard.
Theseatingareahaspanoramicviewsoverthereservoirwhileoutsidethereisplentyofspaceforpicnics.
TherearemaleandfemalechangingroomscompletewithhotshowersandotherfacilitiesincludeWi-Fi.
Outside,theboatparkscanaccommodateupto1,200craftandthereisplentyofroomfornewmembers’boats.
Carparkingisnotaproblem,either.Thereisampleparkingspaceandcarscanbeusedtotowboatstoandfromthewater’sedge.
Launchingisfromconcreteslipwaysor,ifpreferred,thebeacharea.ThereisapontoonforkeelboatclassessuchasFlyingFifteensandforthesafetyboats.

Fleets at BewlFlying FifteensTheFlyingFifteensarethelargestfleetintheclub.Theyarea20-foot-longplaningkeelboatrunningthreesailsincludingaspinnaker,carrytwopeopleandarefastandfun.
WiththeageofboatsrangingfromClassicsthroughSilverfleetsrightuptobrandnewthereisalwayscompetitivesailingtobehad,whateveryourabilityasaracer.Free friendlyadvice isonhand from thehelmsandcrews; sometimesyoudon’tevenhavetoask!
A friendly and welcoming bunch, the group spends regular evenings togetherenjoyingasociabledrink.Thereisanannualbarbequeandcrewsraceandseveralof theboats joinwith theMidweekers forWednesdayeveningcruising.Somealsomakeanannualweek-longpilgrimagetotheFalmouthregatta.
Lasers, Radials & 4.7sTheLaserfleetisanotheroftheclub’sstrongfleetsandisblessedwithsomeveryquicksailors,whichleadstoaveryhighstandardofracingamongthe30ormoreboatsthatparticipate.
The group competes on a Sunday and typically have four races (committee boatstarts)duringthesummerandthreeinthewinter.RegulartrainingisofferedduringthesummerandthereisapopularUKLAyouthprogrammeinthewinter.

Solo ClassTheSolodinghyhas longbeenestablishedasanadoptedclassatBewlValley.Theboatisasinglehanderoftraditional‘onedesign’,originatingfromthe1950sanddesignedbyJackHolt.Thehullishardchine,inwoodorcompositefibreandwithalowaspectratiosailplan,relativelystableandyetexcitingtosail.Theclassat Bewl complements the more modern and demanding single-handed Laserbybeingforthe‘maturesailor’whowantskeencompetitionwithoutthegreaterphysicaldemandsofaLaser.
Theclasshas37registeredboatsofwhich31raceintheclubseries,typically6to15onthestartlineonaSundaymorningandafternoon.TheSolofleethasafullracingprogrammethroughouttheyear.TheSouthernChampionshipisheldeachspringatBewlandanAutumnOpenmeetinginOctober.
EnterpriseWithitsdistinctivepalebluesails,theEnterprisedinghyisimmediatelyrecognisable.Essentially, it isa two-personboatbut itcanalsobeeasily sailedsinglehandedbymore competent sailors. Some of the world’s greatest sailors started out sailing inanEnterpriseandyet theboat’s simplicitymakes it ideal forbeginnersand families.Perhaps,because theEnterprise is notadevelopmentclass,boats tend tobeverycloselymatchedforperformanceandracingthroughoutthefleetiscloseandtactical.Evenbetternewsisthatathickwalletwillhavelittleimpactonyourracingprowess.
The Enterprise is oneof theclassesat Bewl that have their own start in eachof theSundayseriesrunthroughouttheyear.Therearetrophiesforallthewinnersincludinga‘FirstTimers’trophyforthehighest-placednewhelm.

RS400TheRS400isalightweightsailingdinghywithamainsail,ajibandanasymmetricspinnakerthatissailedbytwopeople.Bewlhasalwayshadamatureselectionofclassicadoptedfleets,butrecognisedthatitnotreachedouttosomeofthemoremodernclassessuchastheRS400whichhavebecomepopular.Asaprogressiveorganisationtheclubdoeslooktomovewiththetimesandrecentlydecidedtogivethisclassadoptedfleetstatus.
Fast & Slow HandicapThereisaFastandSlowHandicapfleetatBewlwithdinghieswithaPN(Portsmouthnumber)of1091andabovebeingclassifiedasSlowHandicap.Thefleetsgenerallyconsistofaselectionofmodernboatswhichsuitawidevarietyofabilitiesbutwithjustafewofanyonetype.
Handicapsailinghasformanyyearattractedmassesofattentionforbeingcomplicatedto understand, biased in favour of some boats and not others and, for the purist,is something thatdoes notmake senseatall. Butmanypeople still love to race inhandicapfleetsandfindthisaveryattractiveandequallycompetitiveformofracing.

Windsurfing FleetThewindsurfingfleetatBewlhasbeenpartofthesailingclubformanyyearsanditsmemberscoverthewholeagespectrum,allwithdifferentabilitiesandinterestswithinthesport.
Youngwindsurfers are particularly welcome andwill be given all the help andsupport theyrequire.There isaT15groupcalledtheBewlBlasterswhocompeteagainstotherclubsandalsoholdOpeneventswithotherorganisations.
MembersmainlymeetonaSaturday,butareabletowindsurfonallclubdaysandduringtheweekifyousigninattheclubhousewithyourcompetenthelmorLevel2RYAWindsurfingcertificate.
Fleetmembers enjoy each other’s company off thewater too and they enjoy aget-togetheroratriptothelocalafteragoodday’ssailing.Introduceyourselftothegrouponthebeachandyouwillbeguaranteedawarmwelcome.

Officer of the DayTrainingisofferedwhenamemberhassufficientexperiencetoberecommendedforthisduty.
BeachmasterTheBeachmasterworksunderthedirectionoftheOfficeroftheDay(OOD).Yourmain function is tocoordinateactivityon thebeachand slipwaysandpreventcongestionroundtheclubhouse.
Youwillcheckthatdinghieshaveacurrentcraftstickerdisplayedonthetransomandthatwindsurfersaredisplayinganumberontheirsailbeforetheygooutonthewater.
Assistingsingle-handedsailorswiththeirtrolleysastheygoafloatandreturnmakestheBeachmasterapopularperson.Thisisausefulwaytomeetandbuildarapportwithothermembers.
Finally,youshouldbringsailinggear(wetsuitordrysuitwhenrequired)justincaseoneoftheSupportBoatcrewsisunabletoturnup,sothatyoucanbeswitchedtothisdutyinanemergency.

Assistant Race OfficerWhether you are a racer or not, you can do this duty as part of the RaceManagement team. Under the direction of the Race Officer, Assistant RaceOfficersassistby raisingand lowering flagsandcheckingboatsand timingsasboatsprogressroundthecourse.
Youmayberequiredtoworkintheraceboxorfromthecommitteeboatwhichwillbemooredoutonthewater,soyouwillneedtobringsuitableclothingandyourbuoyancyaid.Freeracemanagementcoursesareheldfromtimetotimeandtheclubwillwelcomeyouifyouwishtoparticipate.
Support Boat CrewTwosupportboats,eachmannedbyahelmandacrew,areprovidedtorenderassistance to dinghy and board sailors in trouble during club sailing sessions.Assistanceismostcommonlyprovidedifadinghycapsizesanditscrewarehavingdifficultyrightingtheboat,inwhichcasethesupportboatcrewwillhelpfromwithinthe supportboat.On rareoccasions the supportboatcrewwill have toenter thewater inordertoassist.Thesupportboatsalsocheckthatdinghiesandwindsurfingboardsstayinthedefinedareasofsailing.
Support boat personnelmustwear suitablebuoyancyat all timeswhenout on thewater.AwetsuitordrysuitmustbewornbetweenNovember1andApril30andplentyofwarmclothingatothertimes.
Support Boat HelmIfyouhaveanRYAPowerBoatLevel2certificate,ideallywithSafetyBoatEndorsement,youcouldbeconsideredforthisduty.

Youth RacingBewlValleySailingClubiscommittedtointroducingawholenewgenerationofsailorsintothesportandoffersahostofopportunitiesforyoungsterstodiscoverapastimethatcaneasilybecomeanall-consumingpassion.
WiththesuccessofGreatBritainatrecentOlympicGamesandthenbeinggiventheopportunitytohosttheGamesin2012,theprofileofsailinghasgrownincrediblyandwillcontinuetodoso.
ChildreninspiredbywhattheyhaveseenonthetelevisionandhopingtoemulatetheirheroesandbecomethenextBenAinslieshouldheaddowntoBewlValley.
Therearefrequenttrainingcoursesheldthroughouttheyearenablingyoungpeopletolearnhowtosailinafriendlyandsafeenvironment.
Oncethesailingbughasbitten,wehaveastructuredprogrammeaimedatgettingchildrentogainconfidenceonthewaterandinhandlingaboattobecomeproficientsailors.
Thisisbalancedwiththeunderstandingthatthereisnobetterwaytogainexperiencethanbygettingoutandracingateveryopportunityoncethebasicknowledgehasbeeningrained.
Club training boats are available to members to use as part of our youth trainingprogrammeatverycompetitiverates,thoughwedoencourageyoungsailorstobuyoneofouradoptedyouthboats(Topper,OptimistorRSFeva)sowecanfurtherdevelopourYouthRacingprogrammeacrossthesecraft.TheRSFevaisadouble-handedboatwith a jib, a mainsail and an asymmetric spinnaker, while the Optimist and Topperdinghiesarebothsingle-handedcraftwithonesail.

NovemberseesthestartofSaturdayYouthRaceTraining,whichisrunalongsidetheJuniorSaturdayClub.Theformerisaprogrammeparticularlyaimedatthoseyoungsterswhoarealreadyracingorareofsuchastandardthattheycanandwanttomoveintotheracingfleet.
Thecoursecoversboththetheoryofracingsuchaslearningaboutrules,coursesandwhatdifferentflagsmeanaswellasexpertiseonthewater:howtostartandfinishproficientlyandtheoptimumwaystonegotiatearacingcourse.
It runs through until the followingApril with a short break forChristmas,with themuch-anticipatedfinalebeingourYouthOpeninMay.
Sunday is traditionally race day and everyweekwe are able to offer a supportboattoouryoungsailorssothattheyfeelcomfortableaboutjoininginwithourmaindinghyfleetsinthemoreformalSundayracing.
Thestarts,flagsandgettingroundthemarksareallimportantaspectsofracinganditalwayshelpsifyouhavesomeonetoadviseandencouragewhereneeded.
Therearenoformstofillin,justsignyournameonthesigning-onsheetandbereadytoraceataround10onaSundaymorning. Ifyouareunsurewhattodo,thenmakeyourselfknowntoeitherDavidCraneorMarkArcherandtheywillguideyoutherestoftheway.

Open CompetitionsBewlrunsaprogrammeofmorethanadozenopeneventsthroughouttheyearwhichwelcomecompetitorsfromalloverthesouth.
As their name suggests, these competitions canbe enteredby all-comers, notjustourownmembers,andtheiraimistointroducenewcomerstothewonderfulstretchofwaterhereatLamberhurst.Atthesametime,itisgoodfortheBewlValleysailorstogainexperienceracingagainstunfamiliarfacesonceinawhile.
There really is racing from January right through to December, with the opencalendarkickingoffwiththeaptly-namedFrostbiteSeries.
We were proud to host the Royal Yachting Association’s South East ZoneChampionships inSeptember2011whichsawverycompetitiveracing inboththeOptimistandRSFevaclasses.
WindsurfersarenotoverlookedeitherwiththeLondonWindsurfingAssociationhostingbothasummeropeneventandoneoftheirwinterIcebreakerSeriesatBewl.

Social Activities Bewl Valley is a very family-orientated club and members like to spend timetogethersociallywhentheyarenotoutsailing.
Theclubhasalivelyprogrammeofsocialevents,withoneofthehighlightsbeingFamilyWeek,whichtakesplaceeachyear inthe lastweekofJulyand involvesaround250clubmembers,manyofwhocampoutunderthestarsinafieldclosetotheclubhouse.
There is a full programme of water and land-based activities which are fullysupervisedandeveningentertainmentisprovidedintheclubhouse.
ClubCampingWeekendsarealso verypopularand severalareheldduring thewarmersummermonths.
The Midweekers, who meet every Wednesday, are a very sociable group whoorganiseaprogrammeofwalks.

Mariners of BewlMariners of Bewl – orMOB for short – is agroupwhichoffers integrated sailingopportunities for people with disabilities and the able bodied. Established in1988,itbecamearegisteredcharityfiveyearslaterandcurrentlyhasanannualmembershiprunningatapproximately50.
MOB is affiliated to PHAB, the national charity that promotes and encouragespeople of all abilities to come together on equal terms through the mutualenjoymentofsailing.
The group sails on Saturdaymornings from April through to October, organisingeventsthroughouttheyearandstaginganannualMOBRegattaatBewl,whichisgenerallyheldinearlySeptember.
The fleet of dinghies available to sale is both modern and diverse and includesChallengertrimarans,aDrascombeluggerandaLaserStratoskeelboat.
