Proposed Project917 Oakdale Road

The proposed project at 917 Oakdale Road involves a rear two story addition to accommodate a new kitchen, family room, as well as a rear terrace and covered porch. The second level involves the addition of a new master

suite.

Documentation of Existing Conditionsat

917 Oakdale Road

This photo shows the driveway side elevation of the house. The screens are to be replaced with windows. This is the only change on the original elevation of the house seen here. The rear non-historic addition (siding) is to be removed, as well as the deck and stair at the rear.

Above is the front elevation of the home. We plan to restore the front entryway, and replace the screens on the side porch with windows and replace the roofing with clay barrel tiles (as seen in historic photo below) if budget allows.

This photo shows the vantage point from the street toward the right side of the home. Below see this side of the home from the rear yard vantage point. We are planning a side covered porch off of the new family room addition. The proposal is well within the building setback and will be 35’-5” back from the front of the house. As you can see from the photo above it will either not be visible from the right of way or minimally visible.

This photo is from the Oakdale Road book showing the historic facades of the homes along the street. This photo shows the original barrel tile roof as well as the original front entry canopy. We would like to re-introduce these elements to the home if budget allows.

The photo above shows the rear facade of the existing house. The non-historic deck and stairs will be removed and we are planning a 2-story addition on rear of the house.

FROM MY ANALYSIS, THE FRONT ENTRY IS ONLY PARTIALLY HISTORIC OR POTENTIALLY NON-HISTORIC. THE OAKDALE ROAD BOOK SHOWS A PHOTO FROM 1971 IN WHICH THE FRONT ENTRY PIECE IS ONLY SUPPORTED BY THE BRACKETS, AS WELL IT HAS THE CLAY BARREL TILED ROOF. WHEN THE CURRENT OWNERS BOUGHT THE HOME, NON-HISTORIC SQUARE POSTS HAD BEEN PREVIOUSLY PLACED UNDER THE CANOPY TO SUPPORT THE STRUCTURE. IT APPEARS TO ME FROM EXAMINING THE HISTORIC PHOTO, THAT THE CANOPY ITSELF MAY HAVE BEEN REBUILT AND EXTENDED AT THE TIME AS WELL. IN ANY CASE, THE CLAY BARRELS TILES WERE REMOVED AND REPLACED WITH ASPHALT SHINGLES. WHEN THE CURRENT OWNERS ORIGINALLY BOUGHT THE HOME IN 1991, THEY ATTEMPTED TO REMOVE THE SQUARE COLUMNS TO RETURN IT MORE TO THE ORIGINAL, BUT IT QUICKLY BECAME APPARENT THAT THE CANOPY WOULD FAIL AS IT WAS PULLING AWAY FROM THE FRONT OF THE HOUSE. THAT IS WHEN THEY HAD THE ROUND COLUMNS INSTALLED TO SHORE UP THE STRUCTURE. TO PROVIDE A LITTLE ADDITIONAL HISTORY TO THE HOME, IT IS WORTH NOTING THAT THIS HOME WAS ORIGINALLY BUILT BY JOHN N. MALONE IN 1923. JOHN MALONE BOUGHT THE PROPERTY FROM THE DRUID HILLS COMPANY AND SUBSEQUENTLY BUILT THE HOME AS A SPECULATIVE PROJECT TO RESELL. IT WAS PURCHASED THAT YEAR BY WILLIAM P. HEATH, V.P. OF THE COCA COLA COMPANY. AS A SPECULATIVE HOME, THE ORIGINAL STRUCTURE WAS NOT AS METICULOUSLY DESIGNED AND DETAILED AS MANY OF THE CUSTOM HOMES THAT WERE ORIGINALLY BUILT IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD. FOR INSTANCE, THE BUILDER SAVED MONEY BY NOT INSTALLING THE BRICK ON FOUR SIDES. ON THE REAR OF THE HOME, AS YOU CAN SEE ON THE PAGE OF EXISTING PHOTOS, WOOD SIDING WAS INSTALLED. THIS IS A COMMON COST SAVING MEASURE THAT YOU SEE TODAY IN SPECULATIVE HOME BUILDING. THE REASON FOR EXPLAINING THIS IS THAT THE HOME OWNERS TODAY WOULD LIKE THE OPPORTUNITY TO ADDRESS THIS. THEY LOVE THE HOME AND LOVE THE STREET, BUT WOULD CHERISH THE OPPORTUNITY TO IMPROVE WHAT THEY FEEL WAS LACKING FROM THE ORIGINAL SPECULATIVE DESIGN. SINCE LITTLE APPEARS TO BE ORIGINAL ABOUT THE CANOPY THAT CURRENTLY EXISTS, IT SEEMS RIPE FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE THIS IMPROVEMENT.
