7/29/2019 BETWEEN LITERATURE AND SCIENCE: THE RISE OF SOCIOLOGY http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/between-literature-and-science-the-rise-of-sociology 1/35 IDEAS IN CONTEXT Edited by Richa rd Rorty, J. B. Schneewind, Qu entin Skinner, and W olf Lepenies The books in this series will discuss the emergence of intellectual traditions and of related new disciplines. The procedures, aims, and vocabularies that were generated will be set in the context of the alternatives available within the contemporary frameworks of ideas and institutions. Through detailed studies of the evolution of such traditions, and their modification by dif- ferent audiences, it is hoped that a new picture will form of the development of ideas in their concrete contexts. By this means, artificial distinctions among the history of philosophy, of the various sciences, of society and politics, and of literature may be seen to dissolve. This series is published with the support of the Exxon Education Foundation. This book is published as part of the joint publishing agreement established in 1977 between the Fondation de la Maison des Sciences de l’Homme and the Press Syndicate o f the Un iversity of Cam bridge. Titles published under this arrangement may appear in any European language or, in the case of volumes of collected essays, in several languages. New books will appear either as individual titles or in one of the series which the Maison des Sciences de l’Homme and the Cambridge University Press have jointly agreed to publish. All books published jointly by the Maison des Sciences de 1’Homme and the Cambridge University Press will be distributed by the Press throughout the world.
