The Great divorceBy C.S. Lewis • Adapted and Performed by Anthony Lawton

C.S. Lewis’ own favorite among his works, The Great Divorce tells the satirical and comic story of hapless professor Clive and the motley band of malcontents who join him on a very curious bus ride. Journeying between Heaven and Hell, Clive crosses a wildly inventive landscape filled with dazzling language and surprising insight.

The devil and billy MarkhamBy Shel Silverstein • Performed by Anthony Lawton

Written entirely in rhyming couplets and punctuated with blues and country music, this raucous and raunchy play follows songwriter, good ol’ boy, and ne’er-do-well Billy and his betting misadventures with the Devil. This play includes themes of sacrifice and redemption and is unapologetically and joyously profane. PARENTAL GUIDANCE ADVISED FOR AUDIENCE MEMBERS UNDER 17.

HeresyWritten and Performed by Anthony Lawton

A probing, comic, autobiographical solo play in which Lawton wrestles with the value of religion. Where is the line between faith and superstition? Why are so many Christians so un-Christian? What is the difference between faith that heals and faith that destroys? This play contains profanity, frank discussions of sex, and ideas that some may consider to be blasphemous. CHILDREN UNDER 17 NOT ADMITTED.

Artists: in Conversation (AiC)Join us for post-show discussions with Anthony Lawton, moderated by Lantern Associate Artistic Director Kathryn MacMillan.

Running TimeAll plays will be performed in the Lantern’s mainstage theater and are approximately 90 minutes with no intermission.

FESTivAL SCHEduLE

Page 5: Between Heaven and Hell: The Anthony Lawton Festival (December 3 - 19, 2010)

FROM ANTHONY LAWTONIn 1999, I declared my mission statement: “Spiritual Theatre for a

Secular Audience.” As an orthodox Catholic, I wanted to present the ideas of Christianity. Not to Christians – I didn’t want to preach to the choir – but to people who had long ago dismissed the idea of religion. It seemed to me that Christianity and the secular world had more in common than most people thought, and that much of the best of Christianity was very good philosophy and psychology. I still think that’s true.

I am less of an orthodox Christian today than I was in 1999, so I more truly straddle the worlds of extreme Christianity and secularism. I don’t want so much to sell unbelievers on the truth of Christianity as to sell the idea of Truth to both believers and unbelievers. I think – as I believe Jesus did – that orthodoxy is wrong about a few things. And I think that pure secularism misses out on a lot of the unique, profound insight of spiritual tradition and philosophy. There is a gulf separating Christian and secular America, and it seems no one is trying to bridge that gulf. Mostly, each side is either studiously ignoring the other, or shouting, pointing, and cursing at the other.

I invite you to regard this theater as a playground (I guess that’s a pun). Here are some ideas and stories. Play with them. Let them amuse you. Have fun. If the ideas stick with you, good. If they broaden or deepen your thought, good. If they don’t, but you had a good time anyway, good, too.

THE DEVIL AND BILLY MARKHAMI first performed this play in grad school in 1992. It was my first solo show. At first, I did the show because I was bored, and I thought the play was good fun. As I rehearsed it, though, I began to think of it as my first Christian play (though Shel Silverstein might roll over in his grave to hear me say so). Granted, the play is one long, dirty joke. But I think there’s a lot more to it than that.

THE GREAT DIVORCEI first performed this play at Wheaton College in 1998 at a celebration of Lewis’ 100th birthday, and later that year at the Philadelphia Fringe Festival. It was around this time that I announced my mission statement. Lewis is great at writing for skeptics because he himself was an atheist until his early thirties. The New York Times Book Review said of him: “Lewis is the ideal persuader for the half-convinced, for the good man who would like to be a Christian, but finds his intellect getting in the way.”

HERESYIn my mid- to late 30s, my life was falling apart, and I was forced to ask myself: “If I am a Christian, why am I such a bad person? Why is this not working?” I hadn’t expected God to heap good fortune on me, but I had at least expected my character to improve over time. I wrote Heresy in 2009 as an investigation into those questions. This play is the story of my spiritual life. Please regard it as one case study.

Page 6: Between Heaven and Hell: The Anthony Lawton Festival (December 3 - 19, 2010)

This festival is dedicated, with love . . .To the memory of C.S. Lewis: You loved greatly; To the memory of Spalding Gray: I wish I could have been your friend; To Karen Armstrong: Blessed are the pure of heart, for they will see God;To Mom and Dad: You taught me the most important things I know.

deepest thanks, also, to . . .Sara Felder, Lenny Haas, Genevieve Perrier, Matt Pfeiffer, Sarah Sanford, Michele Volansky, Charles McMahon and Lantern Theater Company, The Philadelphia Fringe Festival, and Murph.

FOOD FOR THOUGHTEarth, I think, will not be found by anyone to be in the end a very distinct place. I think Earth, if chosen instead of Heaven, will turn out to have been, all along, only a region in Hell: and Earth, if put second to Heaven, to have been from the beginning a part of Heaven itself.

– C.S. Lewis, Preface from The Great Divorce

“. . . if I have all faith so as to move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.”

– 1 Corinthians 13:1-3
