The grouse

This is a very rare bird, you are very lucky to have seen one. It has more than one colour on it, just like this one.

The badger

The badger is black and has two white stripes. They are nocturnal animals which means they sleep in the day and hunt at night.

The Thistle

The thistle is a purple plant with spikes all over it. The thistle is a very common, it is also Scotland’s national symbol.

The Buzzard

The buzzard is a big bird of prey, they eat rabbits and other small mammals.

The Red Deer

Red Deer live in herds. In the winter they come down to the lowlands to eat the grass.

The Crow

The Crow is the colour black. There are two types of crow and they are the carrion crow and the hooded crow.

The Pine Marten

The pine marten looks like a very large stoat. In the summer months, pine martens are excellent climbers and they eat lots of rats and mice.

Whin bushes

Whin bushes are green, spiky plants and they have small yellow flowers in summer.

The Weasel

Weasels are brown and white in Spring, Summer and Autumn but in the winter they are completely white.

The Atlantic Salmon

• Atlantic Salmon live in our rivers. They are very special fish that can live in the sea and travel up the rivers to spawn. People pay a lot of money to fish for them. They are very tasty to eat. They are expensive to buy in the shops.
