WKAR News Special: Back To SchoolSat. Aug. 25, 11am & Sun. Aug. 26, 4pm on 90.5 FMWKAR Education Reporter Kevin Lavery talks with parents, educators, and administrators about efforts to improve elementary education in Michigan. Lavery also examines this year's implementation of a new law requiring all Michigan third-graders who score below par on the English Language Arts portion of the M-STEP standardized test to repeat that grade. According to the 2018 Kids Count Data Book, nearly 56 percent of third graders in Michigan are not proficient in English Language Arts. In this special, WKAR will travel across the state to examine the problems and highlight communities with the solutions.

Connect 4 Kids Mon. Aug. 20, 9:30am–2pm | The Lansing Center Connect 4 Kids is an event for children (K–12) to go back to school feeling great! The event caters to children in the Ingham County area by providing a one-stop location to receive immunizations, optical and physical screenings, haircuts, a clothing voucher, and a variety of other services and resources to get the new school year started off correctly. WKAR Wins 2018 Regional Emmy® Awards WKAR staff were recently honored with three regional Emmy® Awards! Former Executive Producer Tim Zeko received an Emmy in the category Children/Youth/Teens–News Feature for Curious About Careers. Under Talent–Program Host/Moderator, Dr. Rob Stephenson received an Emmy as the host of the WKAR original series Curious Crew. Motion Graphics Artist/Editor Dan Wogan also received an Emmy in the category Graphic Arts–Graphics for his work on Curious Crew.

Melanie McGuire Named New Director of Development and Major Gifts WKAR is thrilled that McGuire has chosen to share her own passion and expertise as the new WKAR Director of Development and Major Gifts. In this position, McGuire will oversee all fundraising efforts at the PBS- and NPR-affiliated public broadcasting station serving Michigan's capital region.

Judy Kehler Joins WKAR as the New Director of Corporate Partnerships at WKAR As Director of Corporate Partnerships, Kehler will oversee development and cultivation of all corporate entities at WKAR Public Media at MSU. WKAR is very excited about the possibilities Kehler will not only offer WKAR but also the local community.

Emily Fox is the New Voice for Morning Edition at WKAR Fox joins WKAR as the Capital Region host and local producer for NPR's Morning Edition on 90.5 FM. The Michigan native is sure to please listeners as their trusted source for local morning news and information.
