Communication is the dynamic process of sending and receiving
messages in order to share meaning and understanding and to make a
connection
Communication:the lubricant of relationships
Spoken and written words you send or receive when communicating
Involves the choice of words, order of words, structure of sentences and the appropriateness
Words do not have the same meanings for everyone and the interpretation can differ according to age, gender, culture etc.
Spoken word
Include vocal cues – volume, pitch, rate, quality
Silences and pauses convey an important part of the message
Being expressive and showing a wide range of emotions add more meaning to the words, enhance the message and add interest to the audience
The ‘voice’
Facial expressions – movement of eyes, eye-brows, mouth and forehead, eye contact, emotional expressions
Body language – appearance, posture and gait, gestures, touch
Spatial use – intimate, personal, social, public
Non-verbals
