The MPA Better Newspaper Contest is open to any weekly or daily newspaper which is a regular active member of the Mississippi Press Association and whose 2011 dues are paid by October 1, 2011.

Entries submitted in the contest must have been published in the period between September 1, 2010, and August 31, 2011. Random dates specified in some categories are selected by the association staff and not made known to the contest committee or association members until the rules are distributed.

Unless specifically allowed in individual categories, advertisements or sections may not be entered in more than one category or circulation division. This rule does not apply to single advertisements appearing in entire sections or special editions which are entered.

All entries must be conceived, written, designed, and sold by staff members of the newspaper entering the contest. These employees are those who regularly work for the entering newspaper every week. An individual’s work may not be entered in more than one circulation division, unless there’s a change of employment during the contest period. An exception would be small weeklies that have no separate staff. No materials may be entered which are prepared completely by mat services, agencies or syndicates. Entries must originate from the entering newspaper. Section covers may not be entered as an ad unless sold and paid for by an advertiser.

DeadlineDeadline for receipt of entries is: 5 p.m., TUESDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2011. All entries must arrive in the MPA office by the deadline in order to be judged; no exceptions.

FeesThe entry fee for each individual entry in each category is $5. Please total fees carefully. Make checks payable to MPA. Credit card payments (Visa, MC, AMEX) are also accepted.

Circulation ClassesThe circulation classification in which each newspaper competes is determined by the total average paid circulation figure reported on the Statement of Ownership filed with the U.S. Postal Service in September 2010. The same circulation figure is printed in the 2012 Newspaper Directory. The circulation classes for each category (unless specified as All Weeklies, All Dailies, or All Newspapers) will be as follows:

DAILY DIVISION NON-DAILY DIVISIONA. Above 15,000 A. Above 4,000B. 9,000 to 15,000 B. 2,500 to 4,000C. Below 9,000 C. Below 2,500

Dailies are defined as publishing four or more times per week. Please be sure to mark the correct classification on all forms.

Entry PrepFull-page tearsheets must be furnished for each single-ad entry, with the ad to be judged clearly marked. Full-page tearsheets for ad-series entries must be connected in such a manner that the judges can “flip” the entries for judging. A BNC Entry Label must

be filled out and taped or glued to the upper right-hand corner of each tearsheet or entry. All information requested on the label must be supplied for each entry. Do not staple entry labels.

A publisher’s Statement of Validity MUST accompany the contest entries from each newspaper. A copy of the 2011 Statement of Ownership and Circulation should be provided. Entries will not be entered in the judging until all statements are received. The conditions of the statement are binding. Incomplete entries (entries missing a required element), or entries submitted that were published outside the contest dates will be disqualified.

JudgingContestants agree to accept the contest judges’ decisions as final. Judging will be held with a panel of volunteers from the Alabama Press Association. Judges reserve the right to disqualify entries submitted in an inappropriate category or which otherwise do not follow the stated criteria.

Awards PresentationPlaques will be given to first-place winners. Certificates will be awarded to second, third, and honorable mention winners. Additional plaques or certificates may be ordered after the presentation of the awards at the annual Mid-Winter Conference, Jan. 28, 2012 in Jackson. Only a single honorable mention per category may be awarded at the judges’ discretion.

15-16 Editorial Section or EditionThis category includes any special section or edition devoted to a theme which is not developed around a retail sales promotion (not sales related). Entries may include, but are not limited to, progress editions, sporting event editions, historical editions and editions on business and industry. An entry consists of one section or issue. Limit of four entries per category per newspaper. Entries will be judged on the quality of the advertising -- how well the ads & editorial content tie together and the development of the editorial theme in the ads.

17-18. Advertising Section or EditionThis category includes any special section developed to boost ad sales. It may include, but is not limited to, special sections or editions devoted to fashion, dollar days, bridal, back-to-school, or other subjects which are meant to encourage consumer purchases. An entry consists of one section or issue, and a limit of four entries per category per newspaper. Entries will be judged on the quality of the advertising and the development of the sales theme in the ads.

19. Series of AdsThis category consists of a series of single newsprint (non-slick) advertisements (minimum of 3, maximum of 6) which develop a single theme for a single advertiser. Entries must be paid ads. House ad series may be entered in Categories 21-24. NOTE: Individual ads from this category may also be entered in single-ad categories. The entries will be judged on content, design, and development of a single theme. Each series of ads counts as one entry. Limit of four entries per newspaper.

20. Theme PageEntries in this category must include two pages or less of multiple advertisers devoted to a specific theme, such as a shopping center promotion, new businesses, special event, etc. Entries will be judged on content, design and effectiveness. Limit of four entries per newspaper.

21. ClassifiedsEntries in this section consist of three entire classified pages or sections, from any three consecutive issues. Entries will be judged on content and design and as All Weeklies/Non-Dailies and All Dailies. Limit of one entry per newspaper.

22. Single Classified Display AdEntries in this category consist of a single classified display ad, defined as a display ad which appears in its proper classification on the regular classified page or section. An auto ad entered in categories 6 or 12 cannot be entered in this category. The entries will be judged on content and design and as All Weeklies/Non-Dailies and All Dailies. Limit of four entries per newspaper.

23. Advertising PromotionThis category includes any single advertisement or series of advertisements which utilize a special promotional idea. The promotion may be sponsored by an advertiser or by the newspaper. Creativity, originality and effectiveness will be considered. A letter of explanation may be included with the entry. Entries will be judged as All Dailies and All Weeklies/Non-Dailies. Limit of four entries per newspaper.

PROMOTING WEB SITESEntries in these categories consist of single ads or a series of ads which promote the corresponding operations of your newspaper. A letter of explanation may be included with the entry. Entries will be judged on originality, effectiveness, content, and design. Entries will be judged as All Dailies and All Weeklies/Non-Dailies. Limit of four entries per newspaper per category.

28. Overall Newspaper PromotionEntries in this category should include tearsheets marked to show material such as news and feature stories, editorials, and ads that promote the newspaper industry. Eligible material might include promotions of news services, new equipment, or newspaper personnel. Newspapers may also show their promotion of National Newspaper Week. Documents, background information, or letter may be submitted to better explain the effort. One entry may consist of up to 5 tearsheets.Entries will be judged on effectiveness and ingenuity of promotion of the newspaper industry through editorials, news, features, and advertising during the contest year. Entries will be judged as All Dailies and All Weeklies/Non-Dailies. Limit of one entry per newspaper.

29. Online AdvertisementEntries in this section are open to locally-generated advertisements on member newspaper Websites. Ads may be submitted in hard-copy form either on a separate sheet or a printed page of the newspaper’s Website, or submitted in electronic format as PDFs, JPGs or Flash, in any of the traditional online ad sizes: banner, tile or tower. Entries will be judged as All Dailies and All Weeklies/Non-Dailies. Limit of four entries per newspaper.

30. Niche ProductFor the purpose of this contest, a ‘niche publication’ will be defined as a special, non-magazine publication which has substantial distribution other than the newspaper’s regular circulation. This publication does not necessarily have to be inserted in the newspaper at all. Examples: One newspaper has an ‘auto trader’ type publication that has free distribution in convenience stores, another has a coupon book sold at local retail outlets. Another example may be an annual cookbook. Entries will be judged on content, design, and effectiveness. Limit of four entries per newspaper.

31. Magazine PeriodicalThis category recognizes regularly-issued magazine products. Frequency is quarterly or more frequently. Magazine is not required to be a part of the newspaper’s traditional circulation; products distributed independently of the newspaper’s circulation will be considered. Criteria for judging will include

advertising content, design and effectiveness of theme and purpose. Limit of four entries/titles per newspaper.

32. Single Magazine AdvertisementEntries must be published in a magazine product of the newspaper and not printed on newsprint. Entries will be judged on content, design and effectiveness of message. Newspaper may only submit entries prepared by its in-house designers or other regular staff members. Limit of four entries per newspaper.

33. Silver Dollar IdeaEntries in this category should include ideas that generated revenue and/or created readership interest. A letter of explanation MUST be included. Limit of four entries per newspaper.

34. Advertising ExcellenceNo separate entries are required. A point system based on the General Excellence category of the Editorial Contest will be used. Accrued points will determine the winner in each circulation division.

NEW! Advertisement of the YearFirst place ads from Categories 1-14, Category 19 and Categories 24-27 will be considered for this award. No additional entry or fee is required to qualify. The winning ad will be highlighted in the BNC Winners Tab and the winning staff member will receive a special cash award.
