1. The purpose of the project

The project Azubi-Europa is a project which is funded by the European Union and the ferderal state of Saxony-Anhalt to show German trainees the structure of business and industry in other EU member states, to look at these countries and learn new skills.

The project is organized by the ISW GmbH. The ISW coaches visit the vocational schools in Saxony-Anhalt and promote the project Azubi-Europa.

A large part of the charges are paid by the EU and normally the other smaller part by the training company.

For the trainee it is a special experience to learn more about companies and structures in other countries.

One positive effect is that the trainee can improve and extend his English.

The aim of my travel is to look at the energy industry of Germany and Croatia.

Before I travelled to Croatia I informed myself about the situation in Germany. In Croatia I got knowledge about the situation in this country.

I would like to show you more details of the energy industry of both countries.

Especially the photovoltaic industry is a part of my presentation.Exemplary I present one company of this business of each country and explain the differences between them.

At first I will address the production methods, the energy extraction and also with the electrical cost of both countries.This information I will show you in charts.

I looked for manufacturers and distributors of photovoltaic modules at europages.com and had a look at their homepages.

I collected some information about the companies which I will explain to you later.

In 2012 the energy extraction in Germany is composed as follows:

A purpose of Germany is to break with the nuclear energy before 2022.One of the most attractive alternatives are the renewable energies. These shall close the gap to 60%.

In 2012 the energy extraction in Croatia is composed as follows:

Croatia could reduce its share of nuclear energy. This country offers opportunities for renewable energy. With 2500 hours of sunshine every year photovoltaic installations is very lucrative. The optimal location approves wind farms too.

The development of energy prices in both countries since 2009 to 2013. The prices are in ct/ kWh.

Percent increase in five years:

Germany: + 28 %

Croatia: + 17%

5. Photovoltaic

5.1 What is photovoltaic?

Photovoltaic is the direct conversion of sunlight into electrical energywith solar cells or modules.

Since 1958 it is used in the aerospace industry.

Now it is mainly used for the electrical generation on earth with roof constructions, as an exterior wall of a house or a open area construction.

The word photovoltaic is composed of the Greek word for "light" and the unit of the electrical voltage.

Till the end of 2013 more than 134 GWp power were installed worldwide.

5.2 Evolution of photovoltaic

The global photovoltaic installation market grew to at least 36.9 GW in 2013, compared to around 29 GW in the last two years.

Asia ranks in first place in 2013 with more than 59 % of the global photovoltaic installation market.

Now Germany, Italy and Greece have enough photovoltaiccapacity to produce respectively 6.2%, 7.8% and 5.8% of their annual electricity demand of photovoltaic energy.

5.3 Roof and open area constructions

The classic application is the construction on the roof of a building.

It is the most common form on the world. The constructions are usually small.

The biggest form is the application in open areas.

The constructions can be unlimited large.

The photovoltaic industry is flexible, which is shown by the next pictures.

How about photovoltaic constructions as an exterior wall for your new home or on the top of your new caravan? It is no problem.

The possibilities are endless.

You only need an idea.

At this slide you see three manufacturers of solar cells or modules from Germany. A lot of them distribute their products themselves.

But big projects in other countries are organized by external distributors.

It is discernible that more German companies export their products to other countries.

They continually develop and improve the procedure.

They promise a warranty of 10 years on materials and 80% of power after 25 years. The modules pass a quality control testing in every phase of the manufacturing process.

Solaris is a company which has a large product range.

They produce mono- and polycrystalline modules.

They promise an average lifetime of 30 years and 80% of power after 25 years. Each cell and product pass a quality control testing in every phase of the manufacturing process.

5.7 A construction in Croatia from Calyxo

On the picture you see the construction on the roof of CEMEX in Split from Calyxo and Solar Magna.

In cooperation with Solar Magna the factory of CEMEX in Croatia build a solar energy system on their roofs whose modules are manufactured by Calyxo. CEMEX is a leading manufacturer of cement in Croatia.

At this point I would like to tell you my opinion about energy evolution.

The photovoltaic industry went through an economically difficult time. There are still enough companies which show that in bad times you should continue without losing sight of your aim.

Renewable energy is our future. They will replace the fossil fuels or the nuclear power. The solution possibilities are very expansive and not exhausted for a long time yet.

I trust in the power of sun.
