Hailing from Minnesota, as do a few of us at Bethlehem, he earned degrees from the University of Minnesota (BS in Liberal Arts), from Northwestern Lutheran Seminary/Luther Seminary (Masters of Divinity), and the Graduate Theological Foundation (Doctor of Ministry in Applied Ministries). Pastor Keith is a husband, father, and grandfather. Daughter Karen and son-in-law Chuck of Brighton, Colorado have three children including one set of twins. Son Dan and his wife Ann of Papillon, Nebraska are also raising three children including a set of twins. Keith is married to Pam Faro, a professional storyteller who has performed across the United States and around the world from Rome to Wales to Australia. Her two sons and three grandchildren live in the Bay Area. As a Lutheran Minister, he has served at Resurrection Lutheran in Pierre, S.D., Redeemer/Black River in Thief River Falls, MN., King of Glory in Arvada, LCA Foundation in Fremont, CA, St. Matthew in Aurora, Cross of Christ in Broomfield, and Rejoice in Erie. Since retiring in 2008, he served as interim or bridge pastor at Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit in Centennial, Lord of the Mountains in Estes Park, Christ the Servant in Louisville, Trinity in Laramie, Ascension in Cheyenne, Atonement in Lakewood, St. John’s in Thornton, and now here. “Being a Lutheran to me,” he says, “is the freedom to know that I am living in God’s grace and love.” When not fulfilling his newly assumed duties at Bethlehem, Pastor Keith might be burrowed into a good book. Upcoming titles on his list include The Arms of Krupp by William Manchester, Bethsaida by Rami Arav and Richard Freund, and Jerusalem by Martin Gilbert. Archaeology fascinates him. He had the chance to work for three weeks on the excavation of the biblical city of Bethsaida as a part of his DMin Program. Prior to that experience, he had always been somewhat interested in biblical archaeology, but having the thrill of taking part in a dig motivated him to learn more about this exciting field. On their honeymoon, Pam and Keith took a cruise “following in the footsteps of Paul” from Athens and throughout the Aegean and Thracian seas. They visited Ephesus and the reconstruction there; someday he’d like to return to see the status of the reconstruction these many years later. Happy to follow in their footsteps and to serve Bethlehem, Pastor Keith names both pastors Glenn Isernhagen and Mark Peterson as longtime friends. A delightful surprise to Keith is the tremendous community ministry going on here, something he describes as “amazingly wonderful”. Keith anticipates helping our congregation through the process of transitioning from one dynamic pastor to another. We welcome Pastor Keith Prekker and pray for God’s blessing and guidance during his time with us.

Monthly Ministry Highlight: Get to Know Pastor Keith This month let’s get to know our interim pastor, Keith Prekker who has lived in Colorado, more or less, since 1982. Transition Update

The BLC Council is hard at work with the next steps of our transition process. Currently, the job at hand is putting together a transition team. The transition team is a small group of five or six people that organizes and facilitates the process of transitioning from one pastor to another. The purpose of the transition team is to mobilize discovery and generate the capacity to thrive anew. The two major goals are 1) to discover a new and deepened sense of identity and purpose for the congregation and 2) to establish a healthy relationship with the interim pastor who will walk with the congregation toward the renewed sense of purpose The major tasks that this team accomplishes are updating documentation of the congregation’s history, assembling comprehensive demographic data about the congregation and community in which it is located, and gathering the perceived needs and desires of the congregation pertaining to a new pastoral leader.

The tools utilized by the transition team vary, but often include: surveys, cottage meetings, demographic research, and others. The transition team makes a final report to the congregation which is the basis for completing a Ministry Site Profile (MSP) with the church council and the call committee. The MSP is the document supplied to pastoral candidates to acquaint them with the congregation. Once the transition team is in place, it will be announced to the congregation. To learn more about the complete transition process, visit the Rocky Mountain Synod website (https://www.rmselca.org/sites/rmselca.org/files/documents/rmstransitions8.17.15.pdf)

ELCA Pastor Profiles

As Bethlehem begins the process of self–reflection to gain a renewed sense of purpose and direction in this time of transition, each edition of the Star will feature a brief profile about a unique pastor within the ELCA. No two pastors are the same—they all have different backgrounds, gifts, and abilities that distinguish their work. As we look ahead toward our new pastor, it’s helpful to also look around at the great diversity of pastors serving within the ELCA.

A few years ago, ELCA pastor Cora Aguilar and her husband decided to buy a house in Maricopa, Arizona, and retire. But, Cora soon discovered, God had other plans.

Cora was named as the mission developer for an ELCA new start congregation in her new community. Maricopa Lutheran Chapel hopes to be a recognized ELCA congregation soon.

I knew it was a divine call,” says Cora. “I knew I was called here to Arizona because of this church.”

Page 3: Bethlehem Star Monthly Ministry Highlight: Get to … August...Bethlehem Star August 2018 Worship Services 8:00 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. Learning Hour 9:10–10:00 a.m. Lutheran Seminary/Luth

ELCA members in Maricopa had previously driven long distances—sometimes over 100 miles round trip—to attend church on Sundays. Out of their desire to worship closer to home, and under Cora’s guidance, Maricopa Lutheran Chapel was born.

Ruben Duran directs the ELCA churchwide program for new congregations. He says, “Cora has a deep passion for people and an expertise in mission. … Nothing will detract her from doing her best and giving her all to help grow [Maricopa].”

Sue Fletcher, who has been with the congregation since the beginning, says Cora plays a big role in making people feel welcome. “Cora doesn’t miss a beat. She knows everyone who’s there and if you’re new she always welcomes you before the service. It’s a warm and loving congregation.”

Cora says when she’s doing worship her prayer is, “God, fill me with your Spirit, your passion, your energy, and let that come out and touch all of the people you have sent on this day to worship with us.”

That energy flows from everyone in the congregation. Carol Van Batavia says that because most people are transplants from all over the country, “we’re not just set in our ways. We’re flexible. We listen to (each other) and that’s important.”

What’s wonderful about Maricopa Lutheran, Sue Fletcher says, is that it is “one that grew from within. The people wanted a church and we were determined that we wanted to do it and so we did. And we know the Holy Spirit was working here with us the whole time.”

Sunday School Needs You

While September seems a way off, it tends to sneak up quickly...so that means it’s time to begin working on our Fall programming. If you’d like to build relationships with some of our young members, please consider being a Sunday School teacher for the 2018/19 school year. We’re trying some fun, new things this year and the teaching schedule can be flexible to accommodate your schedule. Supporting faith development in our children is a big reward. We’re so thankful to the individuals who give their time to this effort. To learn more, contact Jamie Jurkovich ([email protected]).

Safe Haven Training for Adult Volunteers Working with Kids

On Wednesday, August 22 from 6:00–8:00 p.m., come learn about the ways you can be part of a community of adults who cares about making this church (and your neighborhood) a safe place for all, especially our children. All adult leaders who volunteer in nursery care, Sunday school ministry, confirmation/mentor ministry, senior high ministry, or who help lead overnight retreats for youth are required to attend one safe haven training before volunteering in BLC ministry programs. However, if you have already attended this training you are welcome to come again to learn the newest statistics and best practices for working with minors to keep them (and yourself) safe. Additionally, ANY adult, volunteer or not, is welcome to attend. Grandparents, parents, and babysitters are especially encouraged. This training is free and will be held in the BLC fellowship hall. Please simply RSVP to Deaconess Kristen at [email protected] by August 20.

Property Update

New AED Installed

Bethlehem is now equipped with an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) that is mounted on the wall between the fireside room and the narthex. This location is central to the two main areas of use—allowing quick access when needed. There is an alarm on the case door which sets off an alert to emergency services. Approximately 20 people in Bethlehem and Light of Christ have already taken a class and are trained in how to use the AED. We hope to set up another class this Fall that covers both CPR and the use of the AED. The class cost is approximately $25 and would be up to the individual to pay. Stay tuned for more details on the upcoming class. Contact Greg Schumann ([email protected]) if interested

Bathroom Remodel Update

The bathroom remodel is nearing completion. Fire protection inspections are finished. Framing, HVAC, and sheet rock are complete as well. The color scheme was selected by Dennis Bloemker. Currently, we’re waiting on a slight delay for the wall tiles to arrive. The crew is putting up ceiling tile in the meantime.

Driveway Concern

Repairs have begun on the east section of the driveway that had sunk. So far, our investigation has not turned up any information on what caused the sudden settling. The city of Longmont checked their storm sewer line in that area and found that the city lines are in good condition. The church hired a commercial sewer contractor who was also unable to locate any deficiencies in our storm sewer that runs north and south in that area.

Sanctuary Upgrade Plans

The sanctuary upgrade is in the planning stages. The upgrade will include removal and replacement of the pew backs and seating cushions, removal and replacement of the carpeting, and painting of the ceiling in the sanctuary. Performing these upgrades will require a lot of coordination to complete the work within a two-week period. Highlights and sequence of the work include:

• Volunteers needed to move the hymnals, Bibles, chairs, etc.

• Volunteers needed to release the pews from their anchors.

• Movers to relocate pews to the fellowship hall.

• Carpet is removed.

• Painting begins.

• New carpet is installed.

• Pews are upgraded with new seats and backs.

• Pews are reinstalled.

• Volunteers needed to replace hymnals, etc. and prepare the sanctuary for worship.

A detailed sequence document is being prepared to guide us through the upgrade. Cushions are being prepared by the company that originally built the pews. We are working with them to make sure the backs and seats will fit once they arrive. We are also working with them on the start date. All the contractors need to be sequenced and committed to that two-week period. We will let you know the date of this upgrade as soon as we are able.

Sympathy:

Sympathy for Jenny and Mike Kelley on the death of Mike's uncle Jack Lewis on July 24, 2018 in Memphis, TN.

Thank You:

Thank you so much for all you did to make the funeral and fellowship meal of Mae Burkhart so special, compassionate, and loving. You all are true servants sacrificing for the sake of others and offering your time and talents in the nick of time. You continue to be the living Word that Mae had instilled in her as a child and that she could rest in at the end of her earthly life. May the blessings of our Lord be yours as you continue to walk in the Word serving and loving others. And thank you for being my strength as well.

~Chaplain Ro Fesser Ebenezer Lutheran Care Center

Brush, CO

How can I begin to thank each and every one of you for all your prayers, phone calls, cards, and visits that I have received while being deathly ill. This has been a very interesting, challenging walk of faith—an unbelievable journey that God has taken me on. Never will I know the original cause of my sepsis; I simply must accept and strive forward. My new middle name is "You are not out of the woods yet!" I have a long road of recovery ahead of me, and I'm blessed to be a part of the BLC Community who have my back!

~Bev Coody

I would like to thank our Bethlehem family for all the support they provided during the illness and passing of my father, Ross Tippett, last month. Your calls, emails, texts, cards, and conversations were very much appreciated and I thank God for you all. Bless you as you have blessed our family.
