    Order of Worship

Welcome and Announcements +All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism.* Please stand as you are able

    Prelude

    Gathering

As we continue through the time after Epiphany, stories of the call to discipleship show us the implications of our baptismal calling to show Christ to the world. Jesus begins proclaiming the good news and calling people to repentance right after John the Baptist is arrested for preaching in a similar way. Knowing that John was later executed, we see at the very outset the cost of discipleship. Still, the two sets of brothers leave everything they have known and worked for all their lives to follow Jesus and fish for people.

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESSBlessed be the holy Trinity, one God,who was in the beginning, who makes a dwelling among us,who covers us with justice and mercy.Amen.

Your prophet, John, called people to repent, to turn toward God,To turn toward justice and mercy, To turn toward goodness and love.We are called to turn toward justice, mercy, goodness, and the love of God.

    Silence is kept for reflection.

God of goodness and lovingkindness, we have sinned against you and our neighbors. We have turned away from your invitation to new life. We have turned away from the lowly and downtrodden. In your abundant mercy, forgive us our sins, those we know and those known only to you, for the sake of the one who came to live among us, Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.

Hear the good news of peace and salvation!God forgives us all our sins, not through our own work, but through + Jesus Christ, made known to all people. With all who come to the manger, rejoice in this amazing gift of grace. Amen.

    Prayer of the Day

Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ, most merciful redeemer, for the countless blessings and benefits you give. May we know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day praising you, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

    Amen.

Psalm Psalm 62:5-12God alone is my rock and my salvation. (Ps. 62:6)

5For God alone I wait in silence; truly, my hope is in God.

6God alone is my rock and my salvation, my stronghold, so that I shall never be shaken.

7In God is my deliverance and my honor; God is my strong rock and my refuge.

8Put your trust in God always, O people, pour out your hearts before the one who is our refuge.

9Those of high degree are but a fleeting breath; those of low estate cannot be trusted. Placed on the scales together they weigh even less than a breath.

10Put no trust in extortion; in robbery take no empty pride; though wealth increase, set not your heart upon it.

11God has spoken once, twice have I heard it, that power belongs to God.

12Steadfast love belongs to you, O Lord, for you repay all according to their deeds.

Gospel Mark 1:14-20Before Jesus calls his first disciples, he proclaims a message that becomes known as “the gospel” or good news from God. God is ready to rule our lives. Those who realize this will respond with repentance and faith.

14Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, 15and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.”

16As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea—for they were fishermen. 17And Jesus said to them, “Follow me and I will make you fish for people.” 18And immediately they left their nets and followed him. 19As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. 20Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him.

  • MealPeace and Offering

We remember the peace proclaimed by angels and made known in Jesus. We strive for peace on earth and we prayerfully consider our own offerings to God and neighbor as we gather bread and wine (or something else to eat and drink) for the holy meal we are about to share.

    Prayers of Intercession

Guided by Christ made known to the nations, let us offer our prayers for the church, the world, and all people in need.

    A brief silence.

For the church throughout the world, for pastors and teachers, for deacons and deaconesses, and for musicians and servers, that all proclaim the good news of God’s reconciling love, let us pray.Have mercy, O God.

For skies and seas, for birds and fish, for favorable weather and clean water, and for the well-being of creation, that God raise up advocates and scientists to guide our care for all the earth, let us pray.Have mercy, O God.

For those who provide leadership in our cities and around the world, for nonprofit and nongovernmental organizations, for planning commissions and homeless advocates, that God inspire all people in the just use of wealth, let us pray.Have mercy, O God.

For those who are sick, distressed, or grieving; for the outcast and all who await relief (especially), that in the midst of suffering, God’s peace and mercy surround them, let us pray.Have mercy, O God.

For our congregation and community, for families big and small, and for the organizations that meet here during the week, that God’s steadfast love serve as a model for all relationships, let us pray.Have mercy, O God.

Here other intercessions may be offered.

In thanksgiving for our ancestors in the faith whose lives serve as an example of gospel living, that they point us to salvation through Christ, let us pray.Have mercy, O God.

Merciful God, hear the prayers of your people, spoken or silent, for the sake of the one who dwells among us, your Son, Jesus Christ our Savior.

Offering PrayerGracious God, you came to us as one unknown, bringing joy and salvation to the earth. Nourish us at your banquet table, that with all who welcome your birth we may proclaim your peace, revealed in Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.

CommunionThe Lord be with you. And also with you.Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. You are indeed holy, O God, the fountain of all holiness;you bring light from darkness, life from death, speech from silence. We worship you for our lives and for the world you give us.We thank you for the new world to comeand for the love that will rule all in all.We praise you for the grace shown to the people of your promise:the rescue from Egypt, the gift of the promised land, the memory of the ancestors, the homecoming from exile, and the prophets’ words that will not be in vain.In all this we bless you for your only-begotten Son,who fulfilled and will fulfill all your promises.

In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying:This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.Do this for the remembrance of me. For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s life and death and resurrection until he comes. Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

    .

  • 6

Therefore, O God, with this bread and cup we remember the incarnation of your Son: his human birth and the covenant he made with us.We remember the sacrifice of his life: his eating with outcasts and sinners, and his acceptance of death. But chiefly we remember his rising from the tomb, his ascension to the seat of power, and his sending of the holy and life-giving Spirit. We cry out for the resurrection of our lives, when Christ will come again in beauty and power to share with us the great and promised feast. Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

Send now, we pray, your Holy Spirit, that we and all who share in this bread and cupmay be united in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, may enter the fullness of the kingdom of heaven, and may receive our inheritance with all your saints in light. Amen. Come, Holy Spirit. Lord, remember us in your kingdom and teach us to live as we pray, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us;and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

We join with disciples across time and space in this holy meal--wherever we are, with whomever sits at our table, giving thanks that God comes to us again and again.

Pastor Katie, Deaconess Ann, and BLC leaders will never ask for money or gift cards via emails or texts. Scam Alert: A congregation member reported receiving a phone call from someone claiming to be from Amazon (the online shopping company). The caller claimed there were suspicious charges on the person's account and a for asked for access to their computer. Luckily, our member was quick to think it may be a scam and instead of giving information asked for a number to call back. Our member found and called an actual Amazon help line and learned this was indeed a scam. This is a good reminder for us all to be aware

COVID-19 Update: From Red to Orange On Monday, January 4, Boulder County moved to the Orange status of Colorado’s COVID19 Dial. This level change does not affect our current practices at BLC. Note: the quarantine recommendations from the CDC have been updated here.

    ● Worship: We continue online worship services. Because of rapidly increasing rates, we ask that anyone leading from the sanctuary wear a mask, except when preaching. We have acquired some mask-aids to help those who wear masks during worship. We hope this helps those listening at home, too. We continue to look for ways to make worship meaningful and safe.

    ● Meetings and Groups: No indoor or outdoor in-person meetings. We will continue scheduling Zoom gatherings. If you’d like a gathering scheduled, please contact [email protected].

    ● Office: We will not be meeting in offices. One person may work in an office at a time. Colorado (and we) recommend remote work as much as possible.

    ● Building: The building remains closed unless an appointment is made through staff or approval is given through council. All people entering the building must sign in and record their temperature at the front door. Further instructions are listed by the check-in log on the podium by the front door.

    ● Travel: If you travel to a state with a seven-day rolling average of 5% COVID19 positivity rate or higher for the time you were there, or if you have been exposed to someone who is Covid19 positive, please quarantine and refrain from in-person visits to the church for ten days (this time-frame has changed per current CDC recommendations) following your return. If you are scheduled to lead in worship, please contact Brenda ([email protected]) and we will find a substitute for you.

Bethlehem Lutheran Church will continue to heed the health recommendations of relevant organizations—which include the ELCA, Rocky Mountain Synod (RMS), the CDC, Boulder County Health, and the State of Colorado. Please continue to follow our weekly email, announcements, website, and Facebook posts for notifications of any changes and updates to our current situation.
