Page 2 Bethel Herald
When I was a child, Carly Simon’s song Anticipation was popular. The song became so familiar that a ketchup maker even borrowed it for their television commercials. Do you know the song? The refrain reminds us that anticipation keeps us “wai-a-a-a-ting.”
One of my childhood Christmases, I wasn’t about to do any waiting, especially where presents were concerned. Each day the stack of presents under the tree grew a little larger. Each day I checked to see how many gifts had my name on them. I took them. I shook them. I wondered. I guessed. I peeked. Oops. I shouldn’t have done that last one. I really, really shouldn’t have done that last one. The anticipation was more than a kid’s level of patience could take. A tiny tear in an inconspicuous place on these beautifully wrapped presents was easily fixed with some fresh tape. No one would know, right? I knew. God knew. And my little brain and heart knew that God knew.
I came clean. I fessed up. Somehow my mother had already figured it out. It suffices to say that my Christmas lacked the joy that accompanies anticipation. Despair deflated my Christmas spirit. Appreciation was but an apparition. As my tired and weary little soul sat through Midnight Mass on the eve of the official family present opening event, I promised God that I would never peek at presents again. In the singing of the carols and my silent prayers, I was reminded of the true gift of Christmas, Jesus.
The Advent season invites us to slow down. During Advent, we wait in hope with a sense of joyful anticipation. Yes, the waiting may prove challenging. But this gift is worth the wait. Knowing God is with us in all waiting brings great comfort and joy.
May your faithful waiting be filled with hope, peace and joy. Blessed Advent to you.
In Christ,
Pastor Marilyn

2019 Offerings
In order for your offerings to be counted for the year 2019 they must be submitted no later than Sunday, December 29th. Any offerings turned in after that date will be counted for 2020. Thank you.
Offering Envelopes
Offering envelopes for 2020 will be available to pick up during December. If you worship with us regularly and would like to receive offering envelopes, please contact the church office.
At the front of your box of envelopes is a special envelope
marked “Initial Offering”. This offering of $2 helps offset the envelope printing costs. If you are able to make this initial offering, it would be greatly appreciated. Those who participate in Simply Giving, you still need an envelope number of recording your giving. Please pick up your box for special Lent, Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas giving.
Please note that your offering envelope number may have changed so throw out any unused 2019 offering envelopes when the new year begins in order to make certain your offering is credited to you. Thank you.
Bethel’s Budget
Bethel’s proposed budget for 2020 is available for review! You may pick up a copy of the budget packet at the church. The congregational meeting for voting on the budget will be held on Sunday,
December 8th between the 8:30 and 10:30 services. Please bring your copy of the budget packet with you to the meeting as a limited number of packets will be available then.
At this meeting the Council will bringing forward their recommendation regarding the 2020 worship services for discussion and vote.
All confirmed members of the congregation are strongly encouraged to attend and take part in this discussion and decision as we look ahead to the new year of ministry here at Bethel!
Annual Reports are Due!
All Bethel committee and organization chair-persons are asked to turn in their annual reports to the church office by December 20th so that the 2019 Annual Report can be printed and made available to the congregation prior to the congregation’s annual meeting scheduled for Sunday, February 9th. Thank you in advance for getting your reports to us by that date!
Gifts and Graces
As we ask ourselves, “Where God is leading Bethel”, each of us needs to also ask “How is God reaching out through me that I can be a blessing with my gifts and graces?” Gifts & Graces surveys (formerly Time & Talent) were handed out at worship in November. If you did not receive one, please stop and pick one up in the office. Please return your survey as soon as possible. They may be placed in the collection plate or dropped off in the office.

Special Music Opportunities
Whether it’s adding an instrumental or vocal descant to a hymn or being part of a larger group, special music is a valuable addition to our upcoming festive Christmas worship services. If you play a brass, woodwind or string instrument, please consider sharing your talents with us. Vocal opportunities exist for solos, duets, or small ensembles as well as singing with the Bethel Choir. If you would like more information, please contact Diane Meinel, Music Director.

Beer and Theology News
Bethel’s monthly Beer and Theology Bible Study group has made a donation to ELCA GOOD GIFTS with the purchase of a
Family farm and a Sunday school start-up kit. The Family farm contains a cow, goats, a dozen chicks, two pigs, tools, seeds and training to break the cycle of hunger and poverty. The
Sunday school kit is a gift to nurture little ones faith with lessons, supplies and teaching aids to make the gospel accessible.
The Beer and Theology Bible Study group meets the 3rd Monday of each month in a local food and beverage restaurant to discuss relatable subjects like, God’s will, Jesus feeding the crowd, water symbols, Proverbs, and Love. A free will offering is collected each month to share our gifts and work towards the groups giving goal each year. This year we made our goal for a Family farm and added the Sunday school kit.
Please join us for what is always a lively and inspiring discussion.
