“This Month Celebrating 132 Years of Service to

God and Community”

2017 Theme: “Growing Disciples for Christ” BBC: Building Hope, Building Relationships, and Changing Lives”

Our vision: To be a beacon of hope to individuals, families, the community, and the world

Foundational Scripture: “Make disciples of all nations, bap-tizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit; teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you. And lo I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20

Emphasis for July: “The Church”

Praise God from whom all blessings flow! This month our church will celebrate 132

years of service to God and the community. Jesus said, “Upon this rock I will build my

church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” The church is more than just a

building or institution. The church is the people of God, a called-out assembly of New

Testament believers belonging to the Lord says one writer. He continues that the

church is the living entity that God is using to bring about His purposes on earth. To be

the church is an awesome responsibility. We are called to be the salt and light of the

earth. We are challenged to be witnesses for Christ, and we are challenged to go into all

the world and make disciples of all nations. The church has been in existence for over

two thousand years and this month we celebrate, thank, and praise God that Bethel con-

tinues to stand. Join with us as we celebrate on Sunday, July 16th at our 10:00 a.m. wor-

ship service and the fellowship hour after the service. We’re all in this together. To God

be the glory!

On last Sunday, June 25th, we celebrated “Graduate Recognition Sunday”. It was a

wonderful day of worship and celebration. Congratulations to all our graduates and their

parents for a job well done. We thank our Scholarship and Education Committee un-

der the co-leadership of Sis. Gilda Strudwick and Sis. Tasha Pine. We express our spe-

cial thanks to Sis. Dianna Brice and Bro. Jesse Marbury for returning to give special

words of wisdom and advice to our graduates and young people. Rev. Tim Fraley

served as our guest preacher for the morning and shared a powerful message, “No Ex-

cuses”. We were inspired and filled with joy and hope for the future as our children and

young people led us in an energetic an uplifting worship experience.

We are preparing for our summer break during the months of July and August as we

slow the pace of ministry and activities. This is a time for rest, relaxation, and restora-

tion. Enjoy time with family and friends. I encourage our members to strengthen exist-

ing relationships and build new relationships. The church is dependent upon relation-

ships. Our walk with Christ is made evident through relationship with God through Je-

“Wedding Bells”

“Wedding Bells” were

ringing loud and clear on Sat-

urday, June 17, 2017, when

Victoria Renee Johnson &

Samuel Gerald Taylor, Jr. tied

the knot and became husband

and wife.

Dr. Edward O. Williamson

officiated over the double- ring

ceremony. Deacon Dewitt Roy

Smith, acting as a father-figure,

gave the stunning bride away

to her handsome groom. Nup-

tial music was provided by Dr.

Frozine Reece-Smith.

An elegant reception followed

the wedding at The Thomas H. Slater Center. The afternoon

was filled with music, food, fun, and everything that makes a

wedding a blissful occasion!

The Wedding Party participants were: Marilyn Johnson, Millee

Roper, Andrea Johnson, Eli Whitted, Herbert Strobert, Derrick

Davis, Noe DeFranc, Tayevaughn Williams, Sophonnie De-

Franc, and Kyla Harding. Mrs. Janet Allen was stand-in Moth-

er for the bride. The bride honored her deceased mother, Mrs.

Dorothy Ann Taylor, with a moment of silence during the cere-

mony. The groom’s mother, Mrs. Mary L. Burwell and Mrs.

Janet Allen lit the candles to represent the two families to be

joined in holy matrimony.

Ms. Latisha Robinson served as the wedding Coordinator.

The Hospitality Ministry

THESE WOMEN ARE NOT BEHIND BARS BUT ARE IN PRISON!!

Kairos Outside NYC is the local chapter of Kairos Prison Ministry International, Inc. Kairos Outside NYC, chartered

in 2009, is designed for women who are affected by incarceration. Someone in their life is or was in prison. In many

ways the families are “doing time” right along with the incarcerated. This ministry is also for women previously incar-

cerated. Mass Incarceration, is described as the new Jim Crow - from 1970 to 2005 the number of inmates increased 700%. The U.S. has

the highest incarceration rate in the world.

Each year Kairos Outside NYC offers two Weekend Retreats, for women. These women referred to as “Guest’s” have an opportunity to

get to know other females who share similar struggles and concerns. The goal of this ministry is to address the Guest’s spiritual needs by

providing a loving, safe, and supportive environment. Guest’s are in some way transformed by participating in this Retreat Weekend.

The next Retreat will take place November 10-12, 2017.

Members of Bethel Baptist Church: Joanne Edwards, Sharon Gilham, Yvonne Harris, Janice Robinson, Dr. Frozine Reece-Smith and

Stephanie Ward are members of this Ministry. It cost approximately $15,000 to carry out this Retreat. ALL expenses are covered by do-

nations and Guest’s do not pay a fee. If you would like to volunteer, make a donation, or be a Guest on the next Retreat, please speak to

Pastor Williamson or Sharon Gilham…… [email protected]. Donations can be made to: Kairos Outside NYC, P.O. Box One,

Larchmont, N.Y. 10538 Website: www.kairosoutsidenyc.org /[email protected].

On Sunday, June 11, 2017, the Hospitality Ministry was

recognized for their dedication & service to Bethel Bap-

tist Church. They serve with enthusiasm and creative

ways of making all who enter the doors of Bethel feel

welcome. Sis. Pat Manns, president

Jesse Marbury

Bro. Jesse Marbury’s path to teaching as a career was inspiring. Did you know that “Black men ac-

count for just 2 percent of U.S. teachers? The State Higher Education Executive Officers Association

through Project Pipeline Repair seeks to raise that number. The initiative will kick off a summer pro-

gram that facilities mentorship with HBCU professors to get Black high school boys interested in

education as a career.”

How important is it to have Black Men in Classrooms? Jermaine Stubbs, a 5th grade teacher in Atlan-

ta shared a letter he received from one of his students.

To Mr. J

Thank you for being a awesome teacher and for being amazing! This school year

was so fun and I enjoyed it because of you. I wish more teachers was like you. I

will never forget you. I look at you like my dad. I never met my real dad but it okay because you treat me like

I’m your son. You make me so happy. Always feeding me when I am hungry and hug me when I am sad. I will

never forget you Mr. J. I love you and I will never forget about you.

Love Markus

“Missionaries On The Move”

Sunday, June 18, 2017, was another “Missionaries On The

Move” day. We gathered immediately after Sunday School and

boarded our church bus to attend Lott Carey Day at Convent

Avenue Baptist Church in Harlem, N. Y. where the Rev. Dr.

Jesse T. Williams, Jr. serves as the fourth Senior Pastor. Each

year, Convent Avenue’s Father’s Day service is dedicated to the Lott Carey Foreign Mission Convention. We are

always invited to attend by Deacon Tony Taylor of Convent. Deacon Taylor is the Recruitment Team Leader for

Men on Missions of the Lott Carey Convention.

The speaker for this annual event was Dr. David Emmanuel Goatley, Executive Secretary-Treasurer of Lott Car-

ey. Dr. Goatley brought forth a powerful message. The subject was: “What Do The People Say?” with a scrip-

tural reference based in 1Thessalonians 1:1-10. Dr. Goatley’s unique style of delivery causes an audience to be-

come more focused in mission-mindedness, as he unravels the scripture for the sermon. He definitely made us

think about “what we say about our church” as opposed to “what the people say about our church”. The entire

congregation gave a loud unanimous “AMEN” at the conclusion of his sermon!

As usual, Deacon Dewitt Roy Smith was our driver for the day. The following missionaries were in attendance:

Sisters Barbara Andralliski, President, Jan Mazyck, Toni Tweedy, Shirley Johnson, Emory Watson, Joella Shuler,

Joanne Edwards, Stephanie Ward, and Dr. Frozine Reece-Smith. It was a first-time venture for Sisters Jan Ma-

zyck, Toni Tweedy, and Joella Shuler. They stated that they enjoyed themselves immensely. They were highly

impressed and enlightened by Dr. Goatley’s sermon. Sister Shuler’s son is a member of Convent and he and his

wife were there to greet all of us.

We shared our “Missionaries on The Move” trip at our recent meeting on Sunday, June 25.

It is our hope that more members will plan to attend next year. We thank God for the opportunity to share the

Word and serve in Kingdom building on this earth.
