October 12, 2008, was a very special day in the life of myministry. It was then that under the protection of AlmightyGod, given under his hand and Denominational Seal atthe Episcopal Room, that the Right Reverend McKinleyYoung, Presiding Prelate of the Eleventh Episcopal District, assigned me to pastor one of the great churches of AfricanMethodism, Bethel AME Church – Tallahassee. I am gladto be here and am extremely grateful to Bishop McKinleyYoung for his Godly judgment.

I am exceedingly grateful to the Lord to present, throughthis document, my Second Annual Report of stewardshipas the Senior Minister of Bethel – Tallahassee. I am oftenasked, “How is the work?” My natural response is “Thework is all divine.” This report of Bethel’s stewardshipreflects the wonders of His work. God has shown His loveto us by showering us with His abundance and I rejoice inHis goodness. The past twelve months have been a realblessing to this Body of Christ as well as those with whomwe have shared our blessings. This report is a briefsynopsis of the actions and achievements of the faithful, dedicated, and committed membership.

Our Church family has grown consistently. Over the past twoyears, 250 individuals have come to join our congregationin worship, praise and kingdom building. Praise the Lord,110 of them came during this Conference Year.

We would not be able to answer the Call without thecommitment to stewardship found among the Bethelmembers, who, at a growing rate, are becoming tithers. They have caught the vision. Thus; presently, thirty percentof our 1600 members are tithers. To God be the Glory.

Bethel is blessed to have various ministry experiences thathelp to provide biblical perspective on worldly concerns, increase our knowledge and understanding of church polityand history, and enhance our understanding of Scripture. However, the staple for our ministry is our worship servicesas they allow us to express different emotions which providejoy, thanksgiving, love, faith and confidence. Certainly, weare not ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ! Our worshipexperiences give us an opportunity to experience God in anew way. The spirit of God compels us, week after week,to assemble and receive inspiration from the singing, praying, preaching and praise that emanate from Bethel. It is through this medium that we expect a divine-humanconnection. To borrow an expression from Dr. H. BeecherHicks, “…we expect an encounter, a hymn of hope, ananthem of praise, a soul set free, a healing touch, ananointing of oil, a sanctified shout, a wayfarer come home,or a rhema word from a prophet.” We come to Bethelbecause we expect God to do something with us and forus. I believe, no, I know that God has blessed us with Hisglory this conference year.

I would like to express my gratitude to Bishop McKinleyYoung for the opportunity to pastor one of the finestchurches in African Methodism. I am appreciative of hiswise council, his words of encouragement, and theconfidence he has in my leadership. Likewise, I amgrateful to our Supervisor of Missions, Mrs. Dorothy J.Young, for her words of inspiration, exemplary leadership, guidance, and steadfast support during this time oftransition for our family. Words are inadequate to expressmy deepest appreciation to Presiding Elder and Mrs.Ralph L. Wilson, whose words of wisdom haveencouraged us all to strive for excellence. You have madea difference in my life. I am especially thankful to mypartner in life and ministry, Deana, for her prayers andsupport; and for being the backbone of our family, and toJulius III (J. Harrison), Colin and Dylan, who continue toprovide inspiration to us every day.

I am thankful to the ministerial and church staffs, officers, leaders, and the members of Bethel who are committedto ministry. I am also grateful to Dr. Barbara Cotton, Dr.Rosalie Hill, and Ms. Leola Moore for the exemplary workand long hours that they committed to the development ofthis Annual Report, and for the contributions made by Mr.Al Jones and Ms. Rita Taylor. Without them, this projectwould not have become a reality. On behalf of my familyand our community of believers, we say thank you fromthe bottom of our hearts. And thank you, Bethelites, forrecognizing that God has truly called us to Make theDifference; and for allowing our church to become a placewhere it is easy to find God and hard to forget Him. Welook forward to God’s continuing guidance and blessingsas we enter the 2010-2011 Conference Year!

“He said to his disciples, ‘eharvest is great, but the workers arefew. So pray to the Lord who is incharge of the harvest; ask Him to

send more workers into the fields.”Matthew 9:37-38 NLT

At Bethel, we are sensitive to the needs of our members

as well as persons from other walks of life. Thus, we are

a mission driven church. This commitment to missions

is reflected in our response to God’s call to worship,

to witness, to serve and to help others – drawing

them to Christ and building each other up in faith. We

are thankful to God for enabling us to respond to the

Sixteenth Episcopal District (Haiti) and the Twentieth

Episcopal District (Malawi, Africa) during their time of

need; for the privilege of financially supporting

institutions of higher learning; and for the

opportunity to support our brothers and sisters who

requested assistance through our ministry office.

From the abundance supplied by God, Bethel was

blessed to contribute the following to mission and

outreach causes:

Overseas $14,312.19

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comesupon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling peopleabout me everywhere – in Jerusalem, throughout Judea,in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1: 8 NLT

At Bethel, the mandate is clear – Evangelism must be the basic position of the local church and every Christian believer.

To prepare Bethel for more powerful and effective evangelism in the surroundingcommunities, a three-day seminar, “Go Make Disciples,” was held on September 21-23, 2009. Instruction and training were provided in three areas: Defending the Faith,Street Ministry, and Organizing the Local Church for Evangelism. The seminar wasled by the Reverend Dr. James C. Wade, Executive Director for the Department of Church Growth and Development of the African Methodist Episcopal Church.

Dr. Wade instructed the seminar participants on Effective LayMinistry, Knowing and Defending the Faith, and Structuringthe Street Ministry. He led an evangelism excursion to thecampus of Florida A&M University during which participantsengaged students in prayer and personal witness, andextended an invitation to the unsaved to accept Christ astheir personal savior. One hundred and sixty-seven studentswere ministered to during the two-hour visit on campus, oneof whom rededicated his life to Christ.

Go Make Disciples!

• The local church must develop a deliberate plan of action toidentify and train members to become effective witnesses of our Lord.

• Prayer Evangelism must be the order of the day.

• We do not worship for ourselves; we worship to empower us to go after and rescue the unsaved.

• The success of a street ministry excursion is not the number of new converts, but the number of persons with whom the message of salvation is shared.
