Deputy's Corner• Complaining about frequent stom-ach aches or headaches

• Experiencing sudden or frequent panic attacks

(adapted from https://www.anxietybc.com/parenting/parent-child, 8/8/17)

Parents can help their children overcome their anxiety by taking the time to listen and talk to their child about what they are feeling. It’s important for parents to reassure their child that anxiety is very normal, and in some cases a good thing. Anxiety can help motivate us to work hard to achieve a personal goal, such as studying to pass a test. It can also keep us alert to any dangers we might be fac-ing, such as needing to watch carefully when crossing a busy road.

While sometimes anxiety can feel fright-ening, anxiety is not dangerous. It can trigger our ‘fight-flight-freeze’ responses which can be really important for us to have when we might actually be in dan-ger. The adrenaline rush we feel just be-fore a big sporting event actually helps us to perform and that same feeling can propel us to practice harder to prepare for a big game, test or performance.

Anxiety is impossible to eliminate from our lives, but there are skills to help us manage it. A wonderful website for par-ents of children and teenagers is Anxiety BC (please see the link to https://www.anxietybc.com/parenting/talking-your-

Last week we had a very successful and entertaining visit from the American based NED Show, with the three letters of NED meaning, Never give up, Encour-age others and Do your best! A fabulous example of this positive message was actioned during the presentation when Jamie Huy (5P) was chosen as the winner for the NED question time and not only did Jamie provide a thoughtful answer to the presenter about what he thought about the NED message, but Jamie also demonstrated his extraordinary yo-yo skills on stage to an audience of over 550 people! Congratulations Jamie on demonstrating the message of never giving up, encouraging others and doing your best.

Anxiety in Children

There are times throughout the year that a child might become anxious. Some-times a child might tend to be naturally a more anxious person.

Anxious children or teenagers can pres-ent any number of the following symp-toms;

• Crying, clinging and/or tantrums when leaving parent or caregiver

• Excessive shyness, tends to avoid social situations

• Worrying constantly

• Avoiding situations or places due to fear

child-about-anxiety ). Anxiety only be-comes a problem when it becomes ex-cessive and it prevents a young person from joining in on fun activities (such as camps, social functions etc.) and they start wanting to avoid things such as school. Very often, the best thing we can do for a child experiencing anxiety is to stay calm ourselves and simply listen to their fears, supporting them in overcom-ing fear by teaching them about what they are feeling and what they can do to make positive choices. If you feel you need further support, you can speak to your child’s teacher or even make an ap-pointment to speak to our School Coun-sellor by ringing the Front Office.

I do wish you a fabulous week with your families!

God bless you,

Deb Clifford

2017 YEAR 6/7 TOUCH FOOTBALL CARNIVALS

Girls Team List: Abbie Thomas, Annika Sipos, Brianna Horn, Ebony Barry-Nelson, Gisele Cocks, Malaya Hach, Mikayla Librandi, Monet Stirling-McCreight, Natalia Czudek, Sabrina Trimboli & Tyra Hauschild

COACH: Mr Sheeky MANAGER: Mrs Boxall

SACSA CARNIVAL – Monday 5th June – 5th place

Captain: Annika Sipos Vice Captain: Gisele Cocks

The year 6/7 girls team represented Bethany on and off the field respectfully and competitively. From our 8 games the girls fought hard to win 4 and held Tyndale to a nil all draw. All girls feeling extremely proud of their defence in that game. We

narrowly missed playing for 3rd and 4th by one point. Mikayla Librandi and Abbie Thomas scored consistently throughout the day while Gisele Cocks and Annika Sipos used their voices well to direct team mates. Finishing 5th was a wonderful achievement.

STATE PRIMARY SCHOOLS CARNIVAL – Thursday 15th June – 2nd place

Captain: Mikayla Librandi Vice Captain: Natalia Czudek

The girls were fortunate to make the grand final in this tournament. Finishing with 2 wins and 2 losses in the pool the girls faced the task of winning each of their finals games to keep progressing. Thanks to improved communication, teamwork and persis-tence the girls won both the quarter and semi-finals to book their spot in the grand final. Unfortunately the opposition was too strong, however coming from 5th to playing in the grand final was an amazing achievement that all the girls can be proud of.

Mr Scott Sheeky

Boys Team List: Anirudh Iyer, Beau Thomas, Bradley Perrina, Broady Roberts, Declan Whelan, Julian Rodriguez, Nicholas Depares, Noah Villanueva, Pheavarath Hean & Thomas Curley

COACH: Mr Hannaford MANAGER: Mrs Boxall

SACSA CARNIVAL – Monday 5th June – 4TH Place

Captain: Beau Thomas Vice Captain: Broady Roberts

An excellent tournament by the boys. They showed the ability to play the game and provided flare whilst doing it. Our highlight of the day was Bradley scoring his first ever touchdown. Well done boys on winning 5 out of 9 matches.

STATE PRIMARY SCHOOLS CARNIVAL – Thursday 15th June – Equal 3rd Place

Captain: Broady Roberts Vice Captain: Beau Thomas

Well done to the boys for an outstanding tournament. Bethany played against St Johns Grammar, West Park Primary School, St Peters Woodlands, Sacred Heart College through the minor rounds and then Cedar College in the Semi-Finals losing 2 – 1. Across the day the team continued to develop into a solid defensive team, which was shown when we played St Peters Woodlands, the team we played the previous year in the Grand Final. We were able to hold the game to a nil all draw. Well done to Broady and Beau on leading the teams well during the tournaments.
