The First Industrial Revolution of the late 1700’s and early 1800’s brought a number of English speaking people into the village and its neighbour Gowerton, (Ffosfalen) to work in the coal mines / steel and railway industry. In 1872 the village was still predominantly Welsh speaking, there being two Welsh places of worship, Sardis a Welsh Independent and Zion a Welsh Baptist. To meet the needs of the English speaking population there evolved a need for an English Baptist Church. With the closure of Zion for repairs and an extension to the building, temporary accommodation was found for them in the British School Room. The Reverend WILLIAM DAVIES, Minister of Zion, being anxious about the lack of opportunity for English Baptists being provided with English services offered the British School Room to them for the Sunday evening service, the morning service being taken in the British School Room in Ffosfalen (Gowerton). There was however a need for their own English Baptist Church. The Church, still worshiping in the British School Rooms flourished and gained respect for in 1875, Lady HOWARD STEPNEY gave permission for the English Baptist Church to be built on the present site. Reverend FRANCIS MITCHELL HOOD served as Minister from 1875 – 1878 when on the 22nd October 1878 Reverend WILLIAM JOHN was inducted and ordained as the first Minister of Bethany; Reverend JAMES OWEN of Swansea was invited to officiate. Candidate for baptism were baptized at Zion Welsh Baptist Church from 1875 to the building of the new Bethany in 1908 by the kindness and grace of the Minister, officers and members of that church.

In 1900 there was need for larger accommodation but it was not until a meeting held on the 28th November 1905 that it was unanimously agreed to proceed with the business of demolishing the existing and building a new Church. Plans were drawn up by Messrs WILLIAMS and HENTON, Architects and with minor amendments were agreed on the 4th May 1907. The initial estimates proving too high a cost, local builder Mr GEORGE JONES had his tender accepted in the sum of £600.00, recovery of walling stones and slates from the existing building to be deducted from this sum. Lady HOWARD STEPNEY allowed stones from her estate to be used for the building, Church members being responsible for quarrying and cartage. The building was to be 44 foot long by 25 foot wide with a Vestry 10 foot long by the width of the building. On the 4th July 1908, the new Bethany was officially opened by J. JAY WILLIAMS Esq., London, Reverend JAMES OWEN, Swansea, who had preached the Dedication Sermon at the opening of the first Bethany in 1875 was again called upon, and he preached a powerful sermon to a Church filled to capacity. 1937 saw the extension to the vestry; the addition of a front and rear porch, the replacement of gas lighting by electric and central heating instead of gas heaters. Messrs. MORGAN Bros, Gowerton carried out the building contract for £232.10.0 and Mr TREVOR LEWIS, Gowerton, installed the electric lighting for £17. In 2001, damage was caused to some of the gravestones by persons unknown, an article appeared in the South Wales Evening Post.

A pamphlet entitled “A history of Bethany English Baptist Church, Waunarlwydd 1875 – 1975” was published in 1976, listing the Ministers, officers and members of the Church, alongside many notable events and occasions in the life of the Church.
