News 16From Beth Torah Sisterhood and Scheck Family Religious School
2 BETH TORAH TIMES
As the high holidays approach there is a sense of slowing down, the need for reflection and introspection and self-evaluation of our lives. The Jewish month of Elul invites us to listen to the shofar and to recite penitential prayers (selichot) daily. One poignant prayer from the selichot set is the “Shema Kolenu,” we ask Hashem to listen to us, to hear, to pay attention to us and to not forget us and cast away as we grow older. In other words we ask Hashem not to abandon us. When the shofar blower gets ready to sound that beautiful ancient instrument, the blessing he recites says “for the mitzvah to hear the sound of the shofar”. The blessing focuses on hearing rather than blowing. The Shema Israel declares and demand of us to hear.
On Parashat Devarim 1:16, Moses says “SHAMO’A BEIN ACHEICHEM…” ASKS MOSES. “LISTEN OUT YOUR FELLOW MEN”. With three words Moshe was touching down on the deepest message on earth, communication. The only way we can live with one another in this world. The verb “Lishmo’a” means to pay attention, to evaluate and to take in consideration what others are saying and their feelings. There is no coincidence that we have two ears and one mouth. Listen twice the times you speak! Moses uses the form of the word SHAMO’A — Rashi explains that this is lashon hove, present time and ongoing: I am listening, paying attention, without interruption, and I am deeply understanding and feeling like you.
SHEMA KOLENUHear our voices...
Rabbi Dov Ber Pinzon suggests that there are 10 Levels of hearing:1. Passive Ignoring (person is not interested)2. Active Ignoring (conscious choice) 3. Pretending (you are not going to remember a word they say, you’re listening but not recording)4. Recording (take notes and notes but after you need it it goes away, what you hearing is not important to you, but can remember based on good memory)5. Projecting (you listen, but you have an agenda with ideas and pre conceptions, so you project that movie, you are not really listening to what the other is saying, but it is more focused on you…)6. Manipulating (projecting with manipulation…until you hear what you want to hear)7. Hearing (in tune and really listening what they have to say, first spiritual level of hearing)8. Sympathizing (feel for the other person) 9. Empowering (until now there is a separation and no relationship between you and the other: when you listen to somebody, the mere fact of listening to them empower them, when you truly identify with them, you give them strength to overcome the challenges)10. Yechidut (not only empower, but you are so fully involved with the other person’s problem that they assume it as their own, like your own problem)
Their problem is now your problem. The Talmud says that when you are able to fulfill Yechidut, to reach a point when you can assume the other person’s problem as yours, and you pray like it is your own problem Hashem gives you the answer! So now you can also give them something they don’t have, the solution. This is a true relationships, true friendship. In which level are you? Wherever you are, consider the challenge to go to the next level this coming year.
We ask and want Hashem to “Sh’ma Kolenu, Hear our voices,” and to answer our prayers (to find a solution to our petitions). Maybe He wants us to exercise that same spiritual skill here on earth and when the entire world reach to a level of Yechidut, peace and harmony will reign forever.

A Message from Our Director of Development
A very special spiritual and memorable Shabbat was held at Beth Torah on Friday evening, August 25th. Over 400 congregants and community leaders gathered to participate in dedicating this beautiful Torah in honor of Temy and Mario “Don Francisco” Kreutzberger.
The Kabbalat Shabbat Services began with Cantor Gaston Bogolmolni, Cantorial Soloist Evelyn Goldfinger and a Shabbat ensemble providing the music. During Lecha Dodi the doors of the Scheck Family Sanctuary opened with Rabbi Mario Rojzman leading the Torah and the Honorees down the center aisle. Don Francisco carried the Torah with Temy at his side under a chupah held by their son, Francisco; Andres Oppenheimer; Consul General of Israel, Lior Haiat; and Alan Imar, HaNegev USY Regional President. The Shomrim following the Torah were Beth Torah Co-Presidents, Steven Scheck and Mike Segal and Co-Executive Vice Presidents, Rich Berger and Jill Koch.
When they reached the Bimah, the Beth Torah leadership accepted the Torah from the Kreutzbergers and placed it in the Aron Kodesh…from generation to generation.
The ceremony also included the Installation of Officers and Board Members of Beth Torah Benny Rok Campus; Beth Torah Sisterhood, Men’s Club and USY who led a prayer of leadership. Following services a Shabbat Dinner was held in the Deakter Ballroom with over 250 guests. The evening was planned and coordinated by Ana Karina and Jonathan Politano, Chairs, who led the program at dinner and introduced the Kreutzbergers to lead the motzi, the Consulate for Greetings and Don Francisco for an entertaining address. Special thanks to Marla Cohen for her staff support to the committee.
On the prior Monday evening, Rabbi Rojzman set up a program with the Kreutzbergers to have a ceremony to complete the writing of the Torah. Rabbi Bialo from Sofer On Site, sat on the bima with Temy and Mario and proceeded to complete the writing of the Torah. The letters of the Hebrew word, (ANAK),
Torah Dedication In Honor of Temy and Mario “Don Francisco” Kreutzberger
meaning “giant”, was filled in by the honorees with the assistance of Rabbi Bialo. Rabbi Rojzman explained the process and the history, the information about the Torah covers, a second one created for the High Holy Days in white. The Torah covers are in the colors of the flag of Chile. It was truly an inspirational evening.
Additional Sifrei Torah are available for dedication. Please see me to create this honor for your family.
Annual Trip with Rabbi Rojzman This year 46 members will join with Rabbi Mario and Gisela Rojzman on a four day Mission to Rome which will be highlighted by a service and picture with Pope Francis The group will meet in Rome on Monday, October 16th and conclude their activities on Friday, October 20th.

... When people are
looking for a synagogue
to join, Beth Torah
should be at the top of
their list. When people
are in need of help,
Beth Torah should be
at the top of the list of
places that they feel
comfortable to go...
As we enjoy our High Holy Days at Beth Torah, it’s natural to look back at all of the things we have accomplished and look forward to all of the things we will accomplish in the coming year. It has truly been an amazing year. We have upgraded many items, some you may have noticed, and others you would never notice. But all of them were undertaken to make your experience as a member of our congregation better and more fulfilling. In my mind, making our Scheck Family Religious School free to our members was the biggest statement we could have ever made as an institution. We declared that our synagogue stood firmly that Jewish Education is not something that should be limited to people who can afford it, but something that they are entitled to as a member. Think about that for a moment. Jewish education is something that Jews are entitled to. But there have been others!
We initiated the “Shemot” program, which is a specially designed bag that holds prayer books that need to be buried. They are placed on top of the coffin of loved ones to honor them by burying holy books with them. A special effort has been placed on upgrading our computer infrastructure and online presence. We began digitizing our Torah Times and went almost exclusively to online payments. Shortly, you will be receiving an email that will allow you to log into your own account to pay your bills as well as update your information. It will be the first step in eliminating paper statements for people that would like that option. There have been security enhancements in many places, even if you may not notice them.
More are on the way. We have also reincorporated the Suzy Fischer Early Childhood into our synagogue in a seamless fashion and it has allowed for greater cooperation for programming and membership!
I always spend time on my flight back from my summer Israel trip looking forward to the upcoming year. What is the goal to set? What will the theme be? I discussed my thoughts with both lay leaders and staff and the “goal” as we talked about it would be for us as a synagogue to “elevate” . We want the community to always think of Beth Torah Benny Rok campus first. When organizations want to find a place to host an event, we should be on the top of their list. When people are looking for a synagogue to join, we should be at the top of their list. When people are in need of help, Beth Torah should be at the top of the list of places that they feel comfortable to go. When we have events, the community should see them and say “wow!” You may have noticed that the documents you receive, such as flyers and invitation, has taken on a new look and feel! That’s by design and we are thrilled that some of you have noticed the change in the package you received for High Holy Days.
We have always been a synagogue that does great things and we will continue do even greater things in the future. That’s my commitment to you on behalf of myself and the entire staff here at Beth Torah.
Shanah Tova!Wayne Keil

7Fall Edition 2017 l Tishrei-Cheshvan 5778
Dear Families,
Hurricane Irma has passed through South Florida. We are thankful that everyone is safe and did not sustain significant damage and we are fortunate to be able to go back to normal life very quickly. We experienced so many different feelings prior, during and after the hurricane that it is hard to recall every thought. From getting ready to assure our own and our beloved ones safety, to getting gas or basic supplies, while observing the fury of mother nature, its power, and the uncertainty of what damage it may bring. Our thoughts continue to be with all of our friends and neighbors that have been affected along its path not only in Florida but in Texas and Puerto Rico too. We are grateful for the outpouring of concern from so many in the community. And we are blessed to have each other. This is what community is about, to have each other in the good and bad times, to be able to hug our family and friends at a time of joy or sorrow.
In the next few weeks, it is time to start one’s judgment once again. Not us alone, but all of the members of our faith, and our community. Here at Beth Torah we can proudly define ourselves as a true community that embraces inclusiveness, diversity, caring about each other and thinking of each other’s spiritual and material needs. For that reason we offer many options to experience the community in different ways. Your Beth Torah family is
your second home to nurture Jewish lives, lives of young children, teens and adults and seniors. Everything we do is supported by 5000 years of tradition that has sustained us. Everything we put together is out of a desire to celebrate Jewish heritage for ourselves, our children, and hopefully for those that come after us.
In the last year we have grown significantly. We welcomed new families and new students into our educational programs; we have developed new opportunities to fully experience the synagogue from the ritual to cultural and social ways. Now, High Holy Days are here and we have a lot of reasons to celebrate together. In an era of the “I”, an era of “Individualism” that seems to rule us, it is only the US, (in capital letters), the sum of the many I’s and individuals that makes us stronger to sustain and maintain our community. Let’s strengthen the roots of our community for the continuity of the Jewish people; let’s continue to nurture those young and old who come to experience the magic of synagogue in their own language under the umbrella of our Beth Torah family.
L’Shanah tovah tikateivu v’teichateimu! May you and yours be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet new year!We hope to see you in shul to share an amazing High Holy Days experience.

My Dear Sisters
It’s been quite an exciting Summer. Our Board has been very active in making plans for our coming year, keeping some of our standard events as well as adding new ones which we know you will enjoy.
This Summer, our Women’s League for Conservatve Judaism had their convention in Crystal City, Virginia. Judy Berger, Adrienne Plotkin and I attended. Judy also attended the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs convention which started a few days earlier with Rich Berger and Ed Margolis. Adrienne and I started out by attending the Men’s Clubs Havdalah service and Cantorial concert with over 650 men and women participating. So much Ruach in the hall could only get us more excited about our own convention.
Women’s League is celebrating our 100th year, which was the theme throughout the convention. Sunday night was the installation of the new International Board with Margie Miller being our new President. Spoiler alert....Margie will be joining us at Sisterhood Shabbat.
There were many interesting real-life sessions including Presidents, first time delegates, crafts, Jewish cooking (wasabi hashtags ?) and lots more. As a first time delegate, Adrienne learned so much and is very excited to bring some new ideas to the table.
There was a fun night of coming dressed in your favorite decade. Funny how so many of us came as hippies ( see our pictures on the right).
The highlight for the three of us (I think) was at our Torah Fund Luncheon. We were honored to have Rabbi Bradley Shavit Artson, Dean of the Ziegler Rabbinical School in Los Angeles, Rabbi Arnold Rosen of JTS in New York, Rabbi David Golinkin of the Solomon Schecter school in Israel and Rabbi Ariel Stofenmacher of the Seminario Rabinico in Buenos Aires speak about Torah Fund. Imagine sitting in a room of 460 people and having Rabbi Stofenmacher say, “and we produce great rabbis like Rabbi Mario Rojzman”. The three of us sitting in different places all looked up and were so proud. The others spoke and when Rabbi Eisen spoke he told of a woman who dedicated her almost 100 years to Women’s League and Torah Fund and her name was Roni Mintz. Four speakers and two mention our Beth Torah! We are all so proud to call this our home.

News from the Scheck Family Religious School
Welcome!!Shalom Dear Families:
Welcome back to the 5778 school year. The truth is that our beginning got a bit delayed due to hurricane Irma. Unfortunately, we couldn’t open the school as planned but thankfully everybody is safe! Our first day of school has been rescheduled until after Rosh Hashanah on Wednesday September 27; however, we have great news to share:
Exciting news!First of all we want to welcome all of you, especially our new families and students that joined our school. With great pride we share that we have grown significantly this summer. We welcome twenty (20) new students in Kindergarten and more than fifteen (15) new students in grades 1-6. To all of you: Officially, Bruchim Habayim (Welcome) to our Beth Torah Family and to the Scheck Family Religious School.
New this year!We also want to announce that this year we are initiating a new program in conjunction with the Suzy Fischer Early Childhood Academy. The initiative is a Hebrew immersion program offered as an after school club (Heb-Club) to Jr.K students (only) of the ECA. The program is free of charge for this year to those families and it operates on a first come first serve basis. We are already full and our first semester class is closed.
Our StaffWe are very proud of our staff: Top (From left to right) Vero Zalcberg, (Administrative Assistant) Morah Sima (4th grade) Morah Sarit (5th grade), Morah Gaby (Religious School Director), Morah Revi (Kindergarten), Morah Ofira (5th & 6th grades), Morah Lilach (1st grade) Morah Anat (6th grade).Bottom (from left to right) Morah Leah (3rd grade), Morah Corinne (2nd grade), Morah
Eugenia (Movement specialist), Morah Miriam (Music specialist)Morot, to you too Welcome back!!
Focus of our supplementary Jewish Education ProgramThe major focus of our program is the development of our students’ abilities in Hebrew language, building their understanding of Jewish Life cycle events, holidays, culture, and traditions, while connecting them with Israel and with Jewish heritage.
Religious School is also about enjoying being Jewish and building Jewish friendships. The balance between the formal classroom instruction and the informal educational family programs allow us to break away from traditional methods of learning and transform the community of learners into a learning community while creating everlasting memories and friendships.
We look forward to sharing another successful year of Jewish learning experiences. As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
L’Shanah tovah tikateivu v’teichateimu! May you and yours be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet new year!
Sincerely,Gaby RascovskyMembership and Religious School Director

New Doors for Scheck Family Sanctuary and Deakter Ballrooom
Eric Berger, Operations Vice President in partnership with Eric Kaufman, Events by Executive Caterers, embarked on a project to change the doors at the entrance of the Scheck Family Sanctuary and Deakter Ballroom. A goal of $72,000 is needed to cover all costs and $66,800 has been raised to date. The caterer is contributing $36,000 and Beth Torah has raised $30,800 thus far from donations to numerous campus renovation projects and direct donation for the doors. The doors are planned to be
installed right after the holidays in October.

Once again, Marcia Frantz, Chair of the Annual Book of Remembrance, has completed the Yizkor Book for the High Holy Days. Increased ads and increased memories have helped to reach our $40,000 goal. Your support and participation is appreciated.
Shortly after the Holidays the new Lev Shalem Siddur will be inaugurated at Beth Torah Benny Rok Campus. Through the generosity of Linda & Eugene Finkin, the first 325 Siddurim are ordered.
