Sorry You Missed It! On Sunday, April 3, some hearty BT souls braved cold and wind to view a display of Israeli art (Visions of Place: Complete Geographies in Contemporary Israeli Art) at Towson University. Our docent, Dr. Susan Isaacs, delved into the technical, artistic, ethnic, and even political backgrounds of the paintings, videos, and installations. It was most edifying. Sisterhood hopes to plan more free or inexpensive cultural trips to lift us to a higher plane. Join our next venture.

Multi-Sisterhood Luncheon: This annual get-together was a great success. The food, from our BT catering staff, was well received, and terrific buys were found at the Boutique. The best surprise was Karen Goldberg, young and vibrant, who sang popular Israeli songs and

tickled us with her guitar-accompanied original interpretations of growing up in Pikesville. Thanks to Donna Belsky and her committee for a great job!

Proposed Slate of Sisterhood Officers Corrections: The May Newsletter accidently omitted the name of Marcia K. Miller, VP/Publicity. Also, the correct spelling of the Proposed President’s name is Marlene Friedenberg.

Sisterhood General Meeting: A blockbuster theatrical presentation is planned for May 17 at 7:30 pm in the Tuvin Hall. “History Alive: Golda Meir,” a one-character play, offers insights into the life of one of our most beloved and admired Jewish women. Free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

Federation’s 100th Centennial Celebration Annual Convention: Our Beth Tfiloh Sisterhood Builder of Unity Awardee is Sylvia Sklar. Congratulate her on Thursday, May 19, at Baltimore Hebrew Congregation. Send your reservation and $40.00 check to Arlene Mazor, c/o Reservations, 7 Halston Court, Baltimore, MD 21209.

Shabbat Afternoon ClassesMay 7: Guest Speaker,

Rabbi Ian Pear: “The Accidental Zionist: Why Israel Matters and How to Speak About it to People for Whom it Doesn’t”

May 14: Rabbi Chai Posner and Mr. Haggai Lavie: “Israel’s Heroes–Then and Now”

May 21: Guest Speaker, Rabbi Stephen Belsky: “Not All Those Who Wander Are Lost, And Vice Versa: Tracking Ten Tribes”

May 28: Rabbi Chai Posner: “Jerusalem: Undivided and United Capital of Israel”

BT Seder Exchange & Share Shabbat

We extend special thanks to the members of our congregation who generously opened their homes to individuals in our community who would otherwise not have had a seder to attend. Special thanks to Carol and Harry Sommer, Sonia and Arnold Maltinsky, and Rosann and Keith Ehrlich for answering the call to help and providing a meaningful Pesach Seder to their guests.

Throughout the year, we ask our members to please consider being a part of our Share Shabbat program. Contact Holly Venick, [email protected], if you would like to be a part of this ongoing program to meet and share a special meal with other Beth Tfiloh members. This program is brought to you by the Synagogue Life Committee and Share Shabbat chairs Bess Gilden and Sonia Maltinsky.

School News3's Enjoy Hebrew Story Time with 11th Graders

Story time is always special for our PreSchool students…but never quite as special as when it's shared with the big High School students!

Morah Katz’s 11th grade Hebrew class paired up with Morah Brenda’s 3’s to read The Lion that Loved Strawberries ("HaAryeh She'Ahav Tut"), a Hebrew book that the younger students have been reading throughout the year in class. This one-on-one attention allowed for more in-depth learning and discussion for the PreSchool students, as Morah Brenda explains: “Each child had individual attention with the ‘big’ kids who read from our own copies of the book,” after which each pair colored their copy and then discussed their most and least favorite foods. “Connecting the grades together through our mutual love of Hebrew proved to be a success on both ends. We were a little disappointed when our time together came to an end!”

For the High School students, this was more than just a fun change of scenery—this was learning in action. “I wanted the High School students to practice the Hebrew they are learning,” explains Morah Katz. “This joint program gave them a chance to bring their Hebrew to life and use it in a practical way, combined with a beautiful connection between the High School and PreSchool students! It was a great way for all the students to spend time together while connecting through the Hebrew language.”

Eleventh graders, you are welcome back for story time anytime!

Spring Sports UpdateBy Coach Marc Burkom ‘98

We’re entering the home stretch of the BT Spring Sports season, and an exciting season it’s been. There are still a lot of games, meets, and matches to go, but here is a recap of how the Warriors have done so far.

The Boys Varsity Lacrosse team is off to a fantastic start for a third straight year. After two consecutive MIAA “C” Conference championship game appearances, the Warriors entered this season as one of the favorites and are not disappointing. So far, BT has won all three of its league games by a combined score of 47-11! A wide variety of offensive and defensive talents make BT one of the teams to beat.

The Girls Varsity Lacrosse team has had a thrilling season with seemingly every game coming down to the last few possessions. Currently the team is in 1st place in the IAAM “C” Conference with a 7-4 record. Most recently the team won an exciting Senior Day game against Oldfields, 17-15, to celebrate the seniors in style and avenge an earlier defeat. The team has a nice mix of seniors and younger players making great contributions all over the field. The Warriors have high hopes for a playoff run in the coming weeks!

The Boys Varsity Baseball team currently has a 3-6 record. Strong wins against Concordia Prep, Key School, and Chapelgate have been offset by some tough losses. The Warriors still have a chance to make the MIAA “C” Conference playoffs and do some postseason damage.

The Girls Varsity Softball team has struggled against some strong opposition this year but did manage a 17-3 win over Oldfields! The team continues to work hard and strive for more victories.

The Boys Varsity Tennis team is in the playoff hunt with a 2-2 record, right in the middle of the pack in the MIAA “B” Conference, thanks to wins over Glenelg Country School and the John Carroll School. The Boys JV Tennis team is still searching for its first win of the season, but in recent weeks have gotten very close with several individual wins and some very close losses.

The BT Varsity Golf team is off to one of its best starts ever with a 2-1 record. Victories over MIAA “C” Conference opponents Mt. Carmel and Chapelgate have the team in 2nd place! The future is bright as well with multiple freshmen making significant contributions to the team.

The Warriors’ Varsity Track and Field team is having a very strong year. A number of runners have already qualified for the MIAA/IAAM league championship meet, and so far both meets have seen numerous Warriors record personal bests. BT runners have won a number of events, and the Warriors plan to continue excelling at the season’s remaining meets.

Please join us in cheering on all our teams as they continue to strive for postseason success! For a complete schedule of games, visit our website at www.bethtfiloh.com/athletics. Go Warriors!

The BT Girls Varsity Lacrosse team is considered one of the top teams in the MIAA C Conference.

LION KING, JR: BT Middle School's produc-tion of Disney's “The Lion King, Jr.” ruled the Mintzes Theater stage for three sold-out per-formances. Mesmerizing musical numbers, glorious costumes and makeup, astounding set and props -- this was another Broadway level production right here at BT!

The following is the translation of an article about our school’s Israel education and advocacy program, which was published in Yediot America, a popular Hebrew magazine.

How many times have you heard about anti-Israel propaganda on college campuses? How many times have you spoken about it, or read about this rising phenomenon? Probably many times. It seems that lately we’ve gotten to know the three letters – BDS – and the organization that is taking control of the discourse on college and university campuses. As that side steps up its activities, the pro-Israel side is trying to come up with answers. One of the more interesting initiatives comes from a high school.

Beth Tfiloh School in Baltimore is considered one of the largest and most prominent in America, with close to 1,000 Jewish students.

Ella Shaked, an Israeli who is a Hebrew teacher at the high school, describes a diverse and surprising

Preparing Our Students for Israel Advocacy on Campus

community. “Baltimore has a large and active Jewish community. The school has been in operation for over 70 years, and is open to all the different denominations. Everyone is accepted with love and a sense of home.”

Last year Shaked was joined by Haggai Lavie, a shaliach from Israel, who arrived, as he describes it, to portray Israel in a positive light and connect the students to the Jewish state. “I came here for three years as head of the Hebrew language department, and I very quickly understood and felt that the connection to Israel is already solid and strong. I heard alumni returning and sharing their (anti-Israel) experiences on campus. We started understanding our students’ need for more tools to face these trends,” he said.

Although the students learn about Israel in their Jewish History classes, they needed additional material and a new angle on things, in order to prepare them well. “Many of them don’t understand the story behind Israel’s

creation,” Shaked said. “We realized that they don’t have enough workshops, so we started preparing workshops and special lectures, both on their grade levels and in Hebrew classes. Later, we went through simulations that were based on all kinds of charges and claims that we know are made on campuses, and we let the students cope with them.”

The school felt it was important to prepare its students for interacting not only with BDS advocates, but more importantly, for undecided peers who may be overhearing their discussions. “We read interviews and research

THE IDAN RAICHELPROJECT

“An incredible human being who bridges cultures and promotes tolerance.” —Alicia Keyes

“Unique voices singing in dierent languages and from dierent musical traditions.” —Associated Press

Hungton Post listed Idan Raichel as one of 50 People Shaping the Culture ofthe Middle East.

Honored as the “Musical group of the Decade” and “Best Song of the Decade” in Israel in 2010.

including fundraisers and clothing drives, and writing for the High School literary magazine and yearbook. Not to mention her National Honor Society induction, or her appointment as Track and Field team captain. The list goes on.

“I couldn’t imagine a better high school experience anywhere. This year, our grade has gone through a lot of challenges, but everyone came together. It’s such a family.” Shayna also observes that the sense of community extends beyond the

student body. “I imagine that in other schools you don’t get to be as close with your teachers. I’ve been to Shabbat dinners at so many of my teachers’ houses—that just can’t be a thing at other schools!” For Shayna, Jewish holiday celebrations are particularly symbolic of what makes BT unique, as the spirited dancing and singing repeatedly reminds her: “At other schools, the only thing they celebrate is sports games. We get sports games and holidays!”

As graduation quickly approaches, Shayna knows what she will miss most: “Being at BT was such a safe place—I can come to school and feel comfortable to be myself, to speak my mind in any way shape or form, because our grade is so close. No matter what is going on anywhere else, we can come to school and forget about it because BT is such a happy place to be.”

Shayna’s entire BT experience would not have been possible without the generous support of the BT Scholarship Fund. And to all those who have given her this incredible life-long gift, Shayna says thank you.

“BT shaped me. If they hadn’t been able to help me, I don’t know what kind of person I’d be; I wouldn’t be as smart, or as Jewishly knowledgeable. During your childhood and throughout teen years, you’re planting the roots for the rest of your life, for what you’ll be in the future. The donors who have supported the BT Scholarship Fund didn’t just give me a good education, they gave me a good future. They didn’t just change my childhood experience, they changed my life. Without them, I don’t know what I’d be like.”

Each of us has the opportunity to change lives like Shayna’s, to give nearly 50 percent of our student body a good future through a Beth Tfiloh education. You can do that by supporting SPOTLIGHT 2016, BT’s annual scholarship event.

To buy your tickets or become a Spotlight 2016 sponsor, visit bethtfiloh.com/spotlight, or contact Itael Toibman, Development Assistant, at [email protected] or 410-413-2233.

Who’s Who at BTA Jewish Legend Connects the Past and Future

BT member Israel Gruzin is a true Jewish legend. Born in Lithuania, he and his family were relocated to the Kovno Ghetto and then deported to Dachau, where he spent four years. Mr. Gruzin was liberated in 1945 while he and his father were on a death march near Bavaria.. In 1947 Mr. Gruzin heard David BenGurion speak at the Foehrenwald Displaced Persons camp and was inspired to create a drawing imagining the future State of Israel (see photo). Mr. Gruzin’s complete oral history is available at the U.S. Holocaust Museum and can be accessed online at www.ushmm.org.

Mr. Gruzin has left an indelible mark on the BT family through his magnificent cabinetry that can be seen on our Bima and throughout the synagogue edifice.

Advocating for Israel Continued from page 7

papers on the topic, and understood that out of 100 students – 30 will be pro-Israel, 20 will be anti-Israel and all the rest, usually the majority, are the ones we can interact with and try to influence,” Lavie explains.

The school started by teaching diverse subject matter about Israel. Students learned about the country’s history, how it became a state, they learned about the West Bank and the rights to the land. “In correlation with this knowledge, the students learned how to answer questions and claims that we identified as the main ones made against Israel on campus,” says Lavie.

With the knowledge they passed on to the students, they also had the challenge of accepting the part of defending Israel on campus. Surprisingly, this became easier the more complex the picture of Israel was drawn.

“The students grow up with the value of loving Israel, but if they don’t get the real picture, at the end of the day we’ll create disappointment and resentment towards Israel. Students today must get the complex picture. We didn’t want to tell them Israel does everything right

and perfect. This is the only way they can really defend Israel,” says Lavie. “If we don’t expose the things the way they are, we’ll cause the opposite reaction. It’s like the process we all go through with our parents – first they seem perfect to us, then we learn otherwise, but at the end we remain with a strong, honest and realistic relationship with them.”

During this special program, Lavie and the Hebrew department connected the students with Israelis who represent different aspects and different groups within Israeli society. “We brought a delegation from Boyar High School in Jerusalem, they met different soldiers, and they met different speakers representing different views. For example, we had a Palestinian speaker who presented the Palestinian narrative, and it seemed very important for their understanding of the situation. They said at the end that the more complex picture created a deeper connection to Israel, and a better understanding of how to represent it. ”

Towards the end of the seniors’ classes, the school created a special kit, made up of written materials from Stand With Us, and many online materials, resources and links on a flash drive as part of each kit given to each student.

“We hope,” Lavie concluded, “that this kit will be with them every time they need an answer. They can always contact us, of course. The goal is not to lead them to ‘war’, but to appeal to an audience that is undecided on the issue, to enable each of them to represent Israel, should they choose to, and make it more understandable.”

“Students today must get the complex picture. We didn’t want to tell them Israel does everything right and perfect. This is the only way they can really defend Israel.”

- Haggai Lavie

The studies about Israel took the precedent of not focusing only on the Arab-Israeli conflict. “The process was built from deepening their knowledge about the conflict, but also emphasizing other issues, like Israel’s water innovations, the cultural diversity, the high-tech, and other strengths Israel has – the college students we’re preparing them to interact with aren’t interested in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and their connection with Israel must be made from a different angle. They need to encounter more positive and less complicated aspects of Israel.”
