Giving Warms the Heart
Rabbi Jeffrey Lipschultz
Hello to all as we reach February the coldest month of the year. I
have been in the Quad Cities for almost four years and I believe I
finally have experienced what a true mid west winter feels like.
With our coldest days hopefully starting to dissipate I have thoughts
on the warmth of giving in the cold months of winter.
We have entered the month of Adar and leaving the month of Shvat as we prepare to
embrace the warmth of Adar and prepare for Purim in March we need to think of what
one of the important mitzvot of Purim, the giving of gifts to the poor. The Mitzvah is
Matanot the Avanim or gifts to all who ask is an essential Mitzvah that is acknowledged
by a prayer to open our heat and to give even when not asked. The prayers signal for
us to search within our heart and give of ourselves not only to those in needs, but to our
fellow human being. As we approach this month this is not a time for us to look at the
world and say, “You are on your own”, “pull yourself out of your problems by your own
will”, or “don’t lean on me, work it out for yourself." Our mind during this time is to say
that we are stronger when we are together, we lean on each other, and we are
responsible for each other. That is why the prayer for Tsadakah is an essential element
of our faith. We stand together because with one voice we stand with God and offer
our supplication.
As we prepare to warm up during February the act of Tsadakah is a big part of the
unique month of Adar when we are given the opportunity to change and embrace God
with love of others through the act of giving. The acts of asking for forgiveness are to
put our bodies into action and this is why giving is so important. We see that when we
embrace the love of God we see that the greatest gift that can be given is often the gift
of forgiveness. Now is the time to give the Tsadakah of forgiveness to those around us
and try to start our lives with a new heart.
My children just saw the new Mary Poppins movie which reintroduced them to the
classic movie and its songs. This fine musical was produced by Disney over fifty years
ago. I remember as a child watching the movie with my parents and humming the
songs that have become a mainstay in our American vocabulary, but I never listened to
the words until this year when my children starting watching the movie over and over
again and singing the songs and teaching them to their brother Asher only two years
old.
One song that sticks in my mind at this time of year is the song “Feed the Birds”. The
lyrics are an essential element of the act of Tsadakah. “Although you can't see it, you
know they are smiling each time someone shows that he cares. Though her words are
simple and few, listen, listen, she's calling to you, ‘Feed the birds, tuppence a bag,
tuppence, tuppence, tuppence a bag.’"
The theme of the song is that it only takes a little bit of charity to make things better.
We refer to charity as tsadakah. It is the simple idea that God asks us to give tuppence
in our daily life (literally just a few coins, but figuratively just small acts of kindness), but
few of us listen and often pass on the chance to give not necessarily money but also
time and energy to make our world a little better. The song is sad and sweet, talking
about an old woman feeding the birds, but really asking only that our hearts be open to
the act of giving tuppence, just a small amount of tsadakah. The song also is a word to
adults to listen to our children and love them give them time to just laugh with us and
play. As I see my son Ari grow and start school this year I think how little tuppence of
time we still have left before we start to beg him for some of his time for us.
The new movie embraces the concept of tuppence recognizing that an open heart can
change so many things even if not realized immediately. The main characters have
grown from the original yet that concept of tuppence remains the core concept of their
relationship to what is good in the world. The Month of Adar we are to embrace the
heart of tsadakah and prepare to see the joy of Purim in its true light. Now is the time to
give and open our heart to that tuppence of charity, whether it’s the charity of for-
giveness or the charity of an open heart to others, God asks for tuppence from all. I look
forward to a warmer month as we embrace the month of Adar and prepare next month
in March for Purim.
