Nearly two months have passed since the tragic shooting at Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life Synagogue, and we remain shocked, horrified and terribly saddened by this event and the increased threats to the safety and security of the Jewish community. Of course, Beth David has joined other synagogues and temples in devoting resources and spending additional funds to ensure the safety of our synagogue. At the same time,

we remain undeterred in our commitment to advancing our core mission of serving as a welcoming Beit Midrash and a Beit Tefillah—a house of study and a house of prayer.

Quietly Serving our Community

Many of the reports about the Tree of Life shooting noted that some of the victims were members of a local Chevra Kadisha, (sacred society) which serves an important and vital function in the Jewish community.

At Beth David we have a Chevra Kadisha, whose members perform the rites of purification (Taharah) in accordance with Jewish law and tradition. This task is carried out by committee members with reverence, honor and dignity.

We also have Shomrim— a group of people who perform the duty of watching over or sitting with the body of a deceased between death and burial. Usually, the shomer or sitter sits with the casket for a two hour shift.

Those who perform the mitzvah of serving as ChevraKadisha, and those who volunteer as sitters quietly perform an important function in our synagogue, and seek norecognition for this mitzvah, which is its own reward. If you are interested in serving on our Chevra Kadisha, please contact Frank Nelson. If you are interested in or willing to occasionally serve as sitter please contact Judy Hyman.

Happy New Year. Again!

More than 40 years ago, Saturday Night Live ran ahumorous skit on its Weekend Update segment in whichthe “reporter” equated Rosh Hashanah with the secular new year, which begins in ten days:

Weekend Update Anchor Jane Curtain then informs reporter Laraine Newman that Rosh Hashanah differs from the New Year celebrated on December 31st!

With that memory, I once again wish you a happy, healthy, and sweet secular new year.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEBy Stanley Hammer

Jane Curtin: And now, a special live remote fromcorrespondent Laraine Newman at Times Square.

Laraine Newman: Jane, I’m standing in the center of Times Square, New York’s traditional celebrationand meeting place. The turnout this year seems to be smaller than expected – the crowds are lighter,

the noisemakers quieter. A lot of feeling of excitement and expectation prevails, as the new yearapproaches. Of course at midnight, the big ball on top of the Allied Chemical Tower will drop, and thenumeral 5737 will herald the new year. And,according to tradition, the Book of Life will then open, and God will decide the fate of the world for the next ten years. After ten days, however..

Looking Forward to a New Year and a Renewed Year!

This spring, look out for a number of exciting and new ways to get together with the other members of our BethDavid family and ourGreensboro Jewishcommunity. Check out new classes in Hebrew reading,

a Purim carnival that will be off the hook, a community Pesach Seder that will be highly interactive with the addition of planned activities for kids AND look out for a fun, tasty and exciting way to celebrate our southern brand oftraditional Judaism (details to follow soon.)

As we look forward to a fun, exciting and inspiring spring together, your staff and lay leadership are also taking stock of our fall, and in particular, our High Holiday experiences. We have spent significant energy and time collecting our own reflections, the opinions of various stakeholders and processing that with the data we received from our survey.

The data we gathered indicates that overwhelming majority of Beth David congregants had a positive or very positive experience these past Yamim Nora’im (High Holidays). At the same time, the feedback also gave us valuableinformation that will help me and the rest of our leadership team make next year more spiritual, more accessible and more inspiring.

Things we learned:

Infusing Tefillot with Meaning The liturgy of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are beautiful and deep and can be very hard to access without a rabbinic education. Your feedback from this past year and myreflections on the experience tell me that I need to take a more active role in shaping the liturgical experience for us all.

This past year I began to move in this direction, by using English readings to make the prayers more accessible. The feedback we received indicated a couple of things. First, the feedback told us that most people found this helpful. And second it told us that some of you wanted moreEnglish and some wanted less. Next year I will continue to seek to use English readings strategically.

Your feedback also tells me that rather than directing things from behind the scenes, you want me to be up front, guiding the experience for you. This year I will be dedicating myselfto thinking about each part of the service, how I hope you will experience them, and fully utilizing the tools at mydisposal to help make that happen. Through personal reflections and teachings from tradition I will guide your experience.

Music and the Davening Experience This past year we made a big change in who leads ourdavening. Our daveners put in a lot of work and it wasevident in how smoothly services ran. All in all, for a first year after such a large change, I am happy with how things went. At the same time, there are ways in which I plan to work to improve the musical experience for us all.

One way to draw your attention to an important text is to read it in English. Another is for our daveners to use a special, communal melody that we all sing. That will work better if you know what we are singing and why. When we sing a communal melody, I will make sure to set the scene so that you know what we are singing, where on the page you can find it and most importantly, why we are singing it. And as we did this past year, we will make availablerecordings of these communal melodies in advance of the holidays, so that you can prepare for the Yamim Noraim with a curated Beth David soundtrack in the comfort of your home or car.

There are two ways in which we feel connected to the people leading our davening and both need someimprovement in the coming year.

The primary way is through our ears and we are working on some solutions to our sound system that will makesignificant improvements in our communal experience. The second way we feel connected to the people leading our davening is through our sight. Seeing them helps us connect the dots in our minds and we will need to find a way to have them visible to the congregation. This might mean that they return to the bimah facing the congregation, or it might mean a different solution.

Minyanim for Everyone Our parallel minyan, Mevuar (meh-voo-AR), was a greatsuccess. Many who attended found the experience to be one that they were looking for. Cantor Claussen wasaccessible, her teachings were greatly appreciated, and a number of people especially enjoyed the intimacy ofdavening in the chapel.

Our youth programs led by our new and fabulous Director of Education Jason Cathcart were a great success. Services were uplifting, educational, and geared specially for kids. Activities were age appropriate, well-organized, as well as creative and fun. And all of that was accomplished only weeks after the Cathcarts had arrived in Greensboro.

Thank you to all those who took the time to share yourexperiences and ideas—the information you gave us is invaluable. I am confident that next year will be even better! Shalom,

Rabbi Joshua Ben-Gideon

Welcome to 2019!A new year is a great time for pause and reflection. It’s a time to look back on what has happened over the past year and set goals for the upcoming year. As Jews, we are fortunate to have this built into our lives twice a year, on the High Holidays and on the secular new year. New Year’s

Eve is a great time to look back at the intentions we set at Rosh Hashanah and remind ourselves of the direction we wanted to go in this year.

As I look back on goals I had set for Beth David around Rosh Hashanah and where we are now, we’re headed in the right direction. Over the next few months you will start to see subtle changes that are finally coming together and being implemented.

KeshetBeth David Synagogue was accepted into the KeshetLeadership Project (Keshet is the organization that works for full inclusion of LGBTQ* Jews in Jewish life). USCJ has partnered with Keshet to provide this opportunity toconservative synagogues in the country. In early December, Rabbi Ben-Gideon, Jason and I traveled to Maryland with approximately 20 other shuls on the east coast to start the discussion about LGBTQ inclusion and to create an action plan for Beth David. Over the next 12 months, Beth David will have regular coaching calls with Keshet and will also have access to many resources through Keshet and USCJ.

MarketingAs you can probably tell, our bulletin has been refreshed and redesigned. Our new marketing and communications specialist, Juliet, has done an amazing job and put in a lot of hard work to make this possible. We’d both love your feedback on the new design so we can refine it going forward.

Our email marketing will also be changing over the nextfew months. As you are already aware, we are nowsending 2 congregational emails a week. There will be an email every Tuesday about upcoming programs and events and an email on Friday for Shabbat. Juliet is in the process of updating the look of these emails and how wecommunicate information in our emails, so keep a look out for the new design!

We are also still committed to disseminating information through your at-home mailboxes. For large events we will

send out postcards of information. For our more regular activities, check out the bulletin for information. And as always, we will have information in our printed Shabbatannouncements.

ShulCloudWe are very excited to announce that we have purchased a new integrated software program called ShulCloud. ShulCloud has a wide variety of features that will give Beth David more ability to work with the congregation. This new program integrates our website with our membershipdatabase. On the surface it will look like we have a brand-new website. Beyond that, every member of Beth David will be able to login to the website and:• View and edit your own membership information• View your account balances and make online payments• Opt into electronic communications for marketing, electronic statements, invoices and donationacknowledgements• View and register for events from an enhancedsynagogue calendar• And more!

We are very excited about the functionality of the newprogram and are working hard to make this a smooth transition for you as well as our staff. We will be releasing new abilities from ShulCloud little by little but are hoping to make a full transition by the end of March.

I hope everyone has a happy and healthy new year!

Winter CoatsAs autumn fades into winter, I often hear people say, “I’m so glad it’s getting cold outside”. My response is always, “Not me”. I’m much morecomfortable in the summer: 98 degrees with 93% humidity. I’m always more comfortable in a pair of shorts and a t-shirt. What can I say, I’m a

southerner born and bred. So, when winter arrives, I break out the sweaters, flannel shirts and heavy coats. Thehighlight of my winter is when I put on my coat for the first time in seven or eight months and take a few minutes to rummage through my pockets. There is always a treasure trove of memories in those pockets: a handful of receipts, ticket stubs, old key chains, toys and random “stuff” that take me back to last winter. As I sit and go through those items, I am transported into the previous winter. The events of a specific week or day or trip flood back into my mind.

In my case, since I don’t always throw away the “stuff” from year to year, I have even more memories that return from previous winters. It gives me a chance to remember the happy times and even the sad ones. No matter the emotion, the memories are precious and I hold onto them tightly. I like to close my eyes and soak them all in. Memory can evoke powerful emotions and I hope everyone can embrace them as you go through your coat pockets this winter. Let me know if you find anything interesting.

I want to give a special THANKS to the teen volunteers that helped with our kids programming during our ChanukahExtravaganza: Hannah Pines, Alex Gertz, Lena Ben-Gideon and Vered Ben-Gideon. We’re always looking for volunteers! For volunteering, you can earn money to use toward aJewish experience (Israel travel, study, youth groupconventions). Just ask me how!
