The Betacom City 200 series of telephones are advanced yet easy-to-use

products with a number of useful features.

The City 200 offers:

.Large, clearly identified keypad buttons for fast, accurate dialling.

.Last Number Redial, which lets you redial the last number called at the touch

of a single button.

.A SAVE button which lets you save a number in the telephone's memory, dial

other numbers, than recall and dial out the original number.

.Full compatibility with the new TouchToneTM digital exchanges as well as the

older pulse-dialling exchanges.

.Mixed-mode dialling, which enables you to access home banking services and

remote computer networks even when you're connected to a pulse-dialling

exchange.

.On-hook dialling, which means you can initiate a call without lilting the handset.

.10 memories for your most important telephone numbers. These are 'direct-

access' memories: you can dial numbers stored in these memories by pushing

a single button.

.The City 200 can be desk or wall mounted using the bracket, Rawl plugs and

screws supplied. Use the wall mounting bracket as a template to mark off the

holes for the screws.

When unpacking the City 200, keep all the packing materials: They will come in

handy when you want to transport the telephone or if you ever have to return it for

servicing.

Connecting to the telephone line.

Like all modem telephone equipment the City 200 employs the British Telecom

modular plug and socket system.

.If you have a BT socket already fitted, plug in the City's telephone jack.

.If you do not have a BT socket, get in touch with your local BT telephone

Sales Office and ask them to install the necessary socket for you.

Setting the dialling mode

Two modes of dialling are possible with the City 200. One is Pulse Dialling, theother is Touch Tone TM Dialling. As the two modes are quite different, it's impol1ant

you find out which one is appropriate for your installation.

Although pulse-dialling phones will work with TouchToneTM exchanges, you will

not be able to take advantage of the faster dialling and extra features madepossible by their digital technology unless your phone is capable of -and set for -

TouchToneTM dialling.

.For TouchToneTM dialling set the TONE/PULSE switch to the TONE

position.

.For Pulse dialling, set the TONE/PULSE switch to the PULSE position.

IMPORTANT: If your telephone does not dial when the TONE/PULSE switches is

set to the TONE position, you are almost cel1ainly connected to a Pulse-dialling

~nge, in which case the switch must be set to the PULSE position.

A word about digital exchanges

This telephone employs TouchToneTM signalling. British Telecom is replacing all

local exchanges with new digital systems. They will give improved clarity and

reliability, and with TouchToneTM signalling telephones, instant connection of calls

over digital exchanges and a host of advanced features.

If you are on a digital exchange, you can instruct it to ring back with the cost of

your call. Or you can use it to set up reminder calls, where the exchange rings you

at the time you specify. You can even instruct the exchange to divert your

incoming calls to another number, or deal with two calls at once or set up a 3-way

call. These features are from BT Network Services; to use them you need

TouchToneTM signalling. To find out if you are on a digital exchange, contact your

local British Telecom Office.

.Your City 200 is compatible with all British Telecom Network Services.

Making a call

1. Pick up the handset.

2. When you hear the dial tone, dial the number you require.

3. At the end of the call, replace the handset.

Receiving a call

1. When the phone rings, pick up the handset and converse (the visual ringer

will also flash to indicate an incoming call).

2. At the end of the call, replace the handset.

Last Number Redial

The City 200 automatically stores the last number you dialled, a feature which is

useful when trying to reach a constantly busy telephone number.

To redial the last number dialled:

1. Pick up the handset.

2. Press the LNR button once.

The number will now automatically be redialled for you. The number may be up to

32 digits long.

When to use the P -T button

Nowadays many extra services, such as home banking or remote computer

network services, require TouchToneTM signals. If your local exchange uses

Pulse signalling and your phone is to Pulse mode, you can access these special

services using the P -T button, which temporarily switches the City 200 to

TouchToneTM signalling.

NOTE: If you're connected to a digital exchange you should be in TouchToneTM

mode anyway, and will not need to use the P -T button at aI/.

Here's how you might typically use the P -T button:

1. Dial the required Home Banking or other services, with the TONE/PULSE

switch set to the PULSE position as usual.

2. When you need to switch over to TouchToneTM control, press the P -T button.

3. Now, any further numbers you press will emit the appropriate TouchToneTM.

4. Replace the handset when you have finished and the phone will automatically

reset to Pulse dialling.

The MUTE button

There may be times when, while on the phone to someone, you wish to make a

private comment to a third party in the room with you without being overheard by

the caller.

To ensure the caller cannot hear you:

.Press and hold down the MUTE button.

As long as the mute button is pressed, your caller cannot hear what you are saying.

You will, however, be able to hear your caller speaking.

.Release the MUTE button when you wish to continue speaking to your caller.

This switch controls the pitch of the City 200's electronic "nAg" tone. Set as you

require.

OJThe RINGER switchThis switch controls the volume of the City 200's electronic ringer. Set as you

require.

The SAVE button on the City 200 provides a convenient way of storing a number

up to 32 digits long for later recall. Unlike the Last Number Redial feature,

a number stored using the SAVE button will not be erased or replaced by

numbers subsequently dialled; It will remain available until you decide to save

another number.

The SAVE button is not connected in any way with the 10 memories available on

the City 200. Saving a number with the SAVE button does not affect the other

memories. There is only one memory associated with the SAVE button,

and if you save a number using this button, the number previously stored there

will be replaced by new one.

Saving a number

1. Pick up the handset and wait for the dialling tone.

2. Dial the required number.

3. Press SAVE at anytime before hanging up.

Dialling a saved number

1. Pick up the handset and wait for the dialling tone.

In addition to the features described so far, the City 200 offers cer1ain additional

functions aimed at fur1her enhancing the convenience and usefulness of the

telephone.

On-Hook dialling

When you're busy, it's often inconvenient to stop what you're doing, lift the hand-

set, dial the number and wait for the call to be connected. For this reason, the

City 200 enables you to dial without lifting the handset; you only need to pick up

the handset when your call is answered. This feature is called On-Hook dialling.

1. Press the ON/OFF button once; there's no need to lift the handset at this

point. The On-Hook indicator will light up.

2. When you hear the dial tone, dial the number you require. If necessary, adjust

the volume control so you can hear the dialling procedure more clearly.

3. When you hear the called party answer, pick up the handset and converse.

At the end of the call, replace the handset. The On-Hook indicator will go out.

OR

3. If there is no answer; or if the number is engaged, press the ON/OFF button

again to hang up. The On-Hook indicator will go out.

NOTE: If, while on the phone to someone, you are put on hold and wish to carry

on working -or if you wish to put your caller on hold while you look for something

-press the ON/OFF button (the On-Hook indicator will light up) and replace the

handset. The call will not be disconnected. You will be able to hear the other

party over the loud speaker, but they will not hear you. When you wish to resume

conversation, pick up the handset and continue. This feature can be usedwhether or not you originated the call.

Storing telephone numbers10 phone numbers can be stored in the 'direct' memory buttons. Numbers in the

direct memories can be dialled at the push of a single button. (not including the

separate SAVE memory described earlier).

To store a phone number in the memory:

1. Lift the handset.

2. Press the STORE button.

3. Dial the telephone number you wish to store.

The number can be up to 16 digits in length.

4. Press STORE again.

5. Assign the phone number to one of the memories by pressing one of the

keys on the memory keypad (1-10).

6. Replace the handset.

NOTE: This procedure simply stores the telephone number, and does not dial it,

i.e., no call is actually made.

Example: To store the Betacom Helpline number 01277 201201 in direct

memory 1:

1. Lift the handset or press the ON/OFF button.

2. Press STORE.

3. Dial 01277 201201

4. Press STORE.

5. Press the button 1 on the memory keypad.

6. Replace the handset.

Store-as-you-dialThe City 200 allows you to store a number as you dial it -handy if you're dialling

a number for the first time and wish to store it at the same time. This calls for a

different procedure to the one described in Storing Telephone Numbers. ,1/-p-I

To store and dial a number at the same time:

1. Lift the handset or press the ON/OFF button.

2. Dial the number you require.

3. Press store twice.

4. Assign the phone number to one of the memories by pressing key (1-10) on

the memory keypad.

The number will be stored in the chosen memory, and your call will now be

connected.

IMPORT ANT: When you store a new telephone number in memory, always

check that you have entered it correctly by auto-dialling it as described in the next

section "Dialling stored numbers.' Also make a note against the memory button of

the number that is stored in it.

Dialling stored telephone numbers

To dial a number stored in one of the 10 direct memories:

1. Lift the handset or press the ON/OFF button.

2. Press the appropriate memory button.

Combination dialling

Manual dialling (that is, directly via the keypad) and memory dialling can be

mixed as required, and you can also memory dial a very long number by storing it

in two different memory locations.

For example, you could memory-dial the number of your home banking service,

then manually dial any further numbers required to gain access to the service.

A number of more than 16 digits will not fit into a single memory location. You

could get round this by storing the first half of the number in one memory location,

and the other half in another. To memory-dial a long number, simply follow the

sequence described above in dialling stored telephone numbers, pressing the two

memory buttons one alter the other.

Message Waiting

The Message waiting switch is located under the telephone number labelin the handset cradle.

Position 1,6 is the normal position for use on exchange lines and certaPABX.

Position 2,5 is the position only to be used for certa PABX's. Your PABXinstaller will set the correct position.

Caring for your City 200

To clean your City 200 cabinet simply wipe it with a soft slightly damp cloth.

Do not use benzene, thinners, similar solvents, abrasive powder or sprays, as

these could cause damage. Keep it out of strong sunlight and away from hot or

humid conditions.

What to do in the event of a fault

Carefully follow the setting up instructions again to make sure they were carried

out correctly. Take care to do this thoroughly: if you return the product to us and

no fault is found you will be charged handling costs. If the fault persists, carry out

the following simple checks.

1. Ensure that the TONE/PULSE switch is in the correct position for your

telephone exchange, and the TIMED BREAK RECALL/EARTH RECALL switchis in the correct position for your PABX system.

2. Ensure that the handset is correctly replaced on the cradle so that the gravity

switch is fully depressed.

3. Ensure that the City 200 has not been left 'off hook' by leaving the On-hook

facility switched on.

4. If the fault persists try a different telephone in the same socket to make sure

the fault is not with your line or socket.

5. Try the City 200 in a different socket to make sure that the fault is not with the

first socket.

t By now you should have isolated the problem or found that there is a general

fault on the line. If you call the British Telecom Engineers number (normally

151) they may be able to advise you on your next course of action.

Ringer Equivalence Number (R.E.N)

When you add up the R.E.N. values

of your telephones and your City 200 they should not exceed 4. Your new

City 200 has a R.E.N of 1. If you exceed the R.E.N. of 4 the volume of the ringer

in any phone will be reduced and one or more may not work at all.
