At Gagosian Gallery and at the Cerere Foundation Hirst, paintings and postcards T wo separate exhibitions in Rome celebrate the work of cutting edge contemporary artist Damien Hirst. The first (at Gago- sian Gallery, Via F. Crispi 16), is part of a larger exhibition conceived to take place simultaneously in each of Gagosian Gallery’s eleven locations across the world. It fea- tures Hirst’s spot paintings which are considered to be among the most distinctive in contemporary art, a symbol that is recognized universally, cutting across boun- daries of culture and language. The exhibit includes the first spot painting created by Hirst in 1986, his monumental canvases where no single colour is ever repeated, and his most recent works The se- cond exhibition (at Fondazione Pastificio Cerere, Via degli Ausoni 7) is entitled “Postcard from… Damien Hirst” and features “Nu- cleohistone” a poster by Hirst in- stalled in the Fondazione’s cour- tyard. This Concert was finished, according to Mozart's own ca- talogue, in March 1786, around the time of the premiere of his opera, “The Marriage of Figaro”. Scored for piano solo and an orchestra, it was one of three subscription con- certs given that spring and was probably played by Mozart himself at one of these. The rest of the programme foresees the symphony from Rossini’s “Silken Ladder” and Haydn’s “Sinfonia Concer- tante” n. 105. In this belief they go off on their travels – and experience exile, war, rape, the Inquisition and frequent betrayals. In the end they realize that they must come to terms with reality and “make their gardens grow”. On the podium, the British conductor Wayne Marshall who has worked with Choir director Roberto Gabbiani, and a cast that includes Michael Spyres, Bruno Taddia, Jessica Pratt, Derek Welton, Jane Henschel. This concert inaugurates the Orchestra Roma Sinfonietta’s newseason entitled “Musical Offering”. A long-time friend and sup-

porter of the Rome ensemble, composer Ennio Morricone, is on thepodium for the event with a programme dedicated to his ownmusic. Morricone is a household name throughout the world thanksabove all to the scores he has written for hundreds of films inclu-ding box office hits such as Cinema Paradiso, The Good The Bad andThe Ugly, The Untouchables. But – Morricone points out – he is firstand foremost a composer of what he calls “absolute music”, and it isto this genre the first part of the programme is dedicated.
