Welcome to the Sweet Sixteen edition of The Journal-Stan-dard’s Readers Choice Awards - The Best of the Region! Voters have had the opportunity to pick their favorite area businesses and organizations for the past sixteen years. Much has changed since the fi rst Best of the Region was published in 1997.
Back then you could buy a gallon of gas for $1.22. Inflation was a paltry 2.43% and you could get a pound of hamburger or a loaf of bread for less than $1.40. Princess Diana’s funeral was watched by 1.5 million people. The Dow Jones stock average hit 7,000 for the first time and Woolworth closed its last remaining stores. Best movie of the year was the blockbuster Oscar winner, “Titanic.”
Hollywood may have its Oscars and Emmys, but locally we can pay hom-age to the outstanding stars in 66 categories that make up this edition of The Best of the Region. It’s amazing to see how many top winners frame their award certificates and display them prominently at their place of business. For the fortunate few who have garnered the top award in all sixteen years, those displays are impressive.
Results of the voting become a nice claim to bragging rights over a full year for the businesses that attain the coveted “best of the best” in their cat-egory. Coming in 2nd or 3rd are equally impressive. This is especially true in highly competitive categories such as fast food restaurants, insurance agents,
and service companies.
The Best of the Region allows customers to voice their opinion that otherwise may never be heard. Many business surveys poll existing customers who are usually quite satisfied or very dissatisfied with the quality or service at a given business or organization. The daily newspaper, acting as a medium, makes it easier for ballots to be more balanced. It’s also a way for businesses to judge “Top of Mind Awareness” as voters quickly mark a minimum of 36 categories.
The bottom line, no matter how many votes or ballots are cast, is at the cash register. Satisfied customers generally come back again and again, while those who don’t necessarily complain find other places to do business. Now let’s find out who took the top spots.
Sweet Sixteen!and service companies.

Excellence in Pet Care
Seven and a half years ago, Cynthia Faulkner completely transformed a diner and opened Higher Grounds Co ee at 1709 S. West Avenue. What a trans-formation it was. The upscale, urban feel is fairly contempo-rary. A three-sided fi replace, lounge chairs, and newspapers and magazines provide a comfortable setting for those who want to read, chat, or just relax. There are also various confi g-urations of tables and chairs nearby. Wireless internet access is available to customers; and changing art exhibitions add interest.
The front of the coffee house is devoted to the coffee bar, which also gives the professional staff access to the drive-up window. Higher Grounds is the only coffee house in town that offers drive-up service. Here, not only are the beverage drinkers taken care of, but there are also treats for dogs that are along for the ride. About one-third of their customers use the drive-up.
Cynthia says, “From day one our philosophy has been that we want to make our customers’ day better for having come to our store. We want their coffee, or other food or drink, to be delicious. We want them to just enjoy the experience of being here. The cafe is designed to be a little more urban, a little more upscale and very accommodating for business meetings or catching up with friends.”

So has her goal worked? One indication of Cynthia’s success is that The Journal-Standard readers have voted Higher Grounds as the Best Place for a Cup of Coffee every year since it opened.
Customers of all ages are frequent in their visits (some even daily) and vo-
cal in their praise of the place, the products, and the friendly staff. When you walk in on any given day, a person is liable to find couples, Highland Com-munity College staff and students, groups of ladies, several ‘suits’ having a business meeting, and plenty of folks in jeans or other casual clothes.
Deb Miller comes often, sometimes to meet friends, sometimes to read a book. “I come for the calm atmosphere, because the service is good, and be-cause the staff custom-makes my lattes to my personal preference,” she says. And then she adds, “It’s a good place for lunch.”
Peter Flynn says, “I like the people. I like the coffee. It’s like walking in to Cheers! I also like that the team doesn’t assume that I want the same thing every day.”
Interestingly, Kayleigh Gustafson who’s been coming for 4 to 5 years says, “They know my order: iced, skim, caramel or vanilla latte, no whipped cream.” Apparently the staff reads their customers well enough to know when to assume an order, and when not to. Kayleigh also comments on the fact that everyone - staff and customers alike-- is friendly. She also compares Higher Ground coffee as “up to par with Starbucks.”
Cynthia explains, “We use only specialty grade coffee beans for all our bev-erages, which means we use only coffee that is in the top 10% quality of coffee in the world. It’s the ‘cream of the crop’. Our coffee supplier is True Coffee Roasters in Fitchburg, near Madison, Wisconsin. Their name has to do with being true to the hard work and skill of everyone involved in bringing coffee from ‘seed to cup.’ This means carefully selecting coffees that the farmers, ex-porters, importers, and our roasters find exceptional. It’s about faithfully u

bringing out the best in each coffee we offer - true to the bean.”
One of the employees, Sarah Hays, who has worked at Higher Grounds since she was in high school, is a certified Barista. That means she’s had specific classes including the history of coffee, the roasting process, and different types of coffee; and passed written and hands-on tests.
The other ten part-time staff members have also been through training. Cynthia is quick to credit the staff as the ones who make Higher Grounds click. “They are the ones who keep people coming in the door everyday with their energy and upbeat attitude. I don’t think a week hardly goes by with-out someone going out of their way to tell me what a nice staff we have. They are friendly, they take extra effort to make sure our guests get exactly what they want, and they love what they do.”
Alex Schleich has been an employee for nearly three years. He thinks of Higher Grounds almost like a second home with the staff being one big fam-ily.
One newer hire is Olivia Krumm, former goalie on New Zealand’s national ice hockey team, who came to Free-port a year ago. “I like the friendly environment and the weather, particularly when it snows,” she says. When she’s not working in Freeport, she plays hock-ey in Rockford with the Rockford Hotwings.
Besides the espresso, latte, cappuccino, hot choco-late, Chai, specialty teas, and frappe freezes one ex-pects at a specialty coffee and tea establishment, Higher Grounds offers seasonal drinks. There are also a lot of sug-ar-free, fat-free milk and soy choices. The number one favorite flavor continues to be café mocha and caramel and vanilla lattes.
Higher Grounds now also offers fruit smoothies from Dr. Smoothie, a product found across the country in many health clubs. Their prod-ucts contain less fat and sugar than others, and some flavors are one
hundred percent crushed fruit. Cynthia says, “We also have various nu-tritional additives available such as a multi-vitamin and mineral, yogurt, weight-loss blend, and a whey protein concentrate.”
There’s also a new electronic menu screen that in essence televises the menu offerings. The new screen system makes it much easier
to update new items and is very readable.
“While coffee drinks are certainly our mainstay,” Cynthia says, “people enjoy our food, too. We have various breakfast sandwiches, paninis, and other items including quiches and scones. Our fresh-baked cinnamon rolls are baked on- prem-
ises.”
At lunchtime, there’s soup or chili available, with flavors chang-ing daily. A variety of wraps, paninis, flatbread, and crois-
sants cover hot and chilled fillings ranging from savory Greek chicken and four cheeses to turkey breast with arti-choke spread and pesto. Tuna and chicken salads and an assortment of sweets round out the midday choices.
Higher Grounds Coffee, located directly across from Staples on Highway 26 South, is open Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.; Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. and Sunday from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Hours may vary seasonally. The café is also available after hours for business meetings or private parties. For more informa-tion, call 815-297-9441.

Donna Obert and Cindy Minkie, co-owners of Elite Design Team Salon and Day Spa, met as students of cosmetology at Highland Community College in 1980. After graduation, they both joined Command Performance in Freeport, part of a national chain of salons, and have been working together ever since.
In 1994, they started the Elite Design Team which was a new concept to the area at the time. What made their business dif-ferent was that they rented salon space to individual hair stylists and other technicians, who then became owners of a business within a business. Obert puts it this way, “Everyone is working together under one roof, but each technician has their own inde-pendent business and is responsible for it.”
Their first place of business was in the former Lincoln School Building which they outgrew after three years. Next they were located in the space adjacent to Four Seasons Bowling

Center. Five years ago they moved to their greatly expanded, free-standing building at 401 West Meadows Drive in Freeport.
“We are extremely grateful to Journal-Standard readers for their ‘Best of the Region’ votes. It’s been a huge honor that we’ve been able to keep the title of best hair salon for so many consecutive years,” says Minkie.
Obert agrees and adds that the philosophy of the business is to “Transform the physical, as well as the emotional, well-being of our cus-
tomers through our salon and spa services provided through education and caring professionals.”
Today the Elite Design Team numbers 29 stylists and technicians, plus sup-port staff. Members of this winning team are: Cindy Minkie, Donna Obert, Leanne Rudy, Becky Bendick, Kelly Blair, Heidi Koester, Bev Pattat, Michele Iserman, Shari Cook, April Lynn, Jessica Ferguson, Lindsay Ludwig, Lindy Aspinwall, Carla Tillis,Teal Gill, Amy Jones, Emily Hartman, Brittnay Alexan-der, Nina Harn, Tasha Marini, Vicki Johnson, Casey Carr, Kayla Clark, Caitlin Fiene, Kara Christensen, Tracy Zick, Lori Myers, Amber Babler, Kelci Pat-terson, Bren Olsen, Lauren Wescott, Nicole Obert, and Mady Folgate. All the staff has advanced training and takes additional continuing education credits in all aspects of their individual professions.
Elite Design Team’s services have advanced way beyond just hair. Full body and specialty massages, facials, manicures, pedicures, wig consultations, ex-tensions, electrolysis, make-up including glitter eye candy and lashes, Ombre for nails and hair, rainbow colors, facial and body waxing, crystal add-ins, ear piercing, chemical peels, body wraps, safe and sunless tanners, and shellac nails are among their services available now. That’s in addition to their best selling product categories including Aquage, Matrix, Glominerals, and Bioel-ements for professional skin care.
According to Minkie, their present location has enabled them to provide many relaxation areas complete with a fireplace, showers, lush robes, and recliners. “The idea was to create a friendly, come in and relax place where women and men can spend the day or a few hours.” It’s a popular place for girls’ get- togethers and wedding parties, she notes.
“Knowing that this is a competitive business and clients have many choices as to which salon or spa they visit, we strongly rely on exceptional customer service,” Minkie continues.
“We look to our customers for feedback about our service,” says Obert. “We love receiving the compliments we get from the moment they walk through our front door; right through the entire experience of their salon visit.”
Chris Schneiderman of Freeport, is just one of their satisfied customers. He says, “Elite Design Team provides excellent customer service at a very reason-able price. I’m always greeted with a smile and made to feel welcome.”

and Donna had their own business, says, “I like the atmosphere. It’s warm, friendly, and upbeat. I also appreciate their flexibility in meeting my needs for appointments. Elite Design Team truly demonstrates how much they care about their customers. Prior to my daughter’s recent wedding, Cindy took time designing various hair styles and make-ups for me. They were cre-ative and gave me a stylish look for my daughter Ashley’s special day.”
Another long-time customer from Baileyville is Colleen Dikkers, who comes regularly for pedicures. Her mom had diabetes and Dikkers knows the importance of keeping her feet in good condition. She never walks bare-footed and thinks of her pedicures as prevention against foot sores. She also finds the pedicures “very relaxing.”
Accolades, from Esther Collins of Lena, go to the manicurists. Every two weeks Collins gets her fingernails shellacked. “The smudge days are over with,” she says of the new technology and adds, “I love the customer service which is friendly and welcoming.”
Elite Design Team is located at 401 Meadows Drive in Freeport. Their hours are 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday; from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Friday, and from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Saturday.
On Friday, May 18th, the Elite Design Team will be celebrating another milestone: their fi fth anniversary at their present location. Designed as a thank you to their customers, the event will feature a fashion show, refreshments, and the introduction of the “make-over” in the salon with its new paint colors and totally
di erent décor. For more details, follow them on Facebook or call 815-232-3669 or 815-232-5410.

The Freeport Eagles Club opened its doors April 17, 1904, on the third floor of the Seitz Building. In 1929, the facility moved to 301 South Van Buren Street where it stayed until moving to its present location at 1200 West Galena Avenue in 1997. It’s impossible to know how many wedding receptions have been celebrated at the Eagles over the years, but last year there were 41 wedding receptions not counting other parties and events. Dates are being booked into 2014, with slim avail-ability left in 2012 and some available dates left in 2013.
It’s safe to say that the staff at the Eagles Club has experience on their side, but it’s probably their delivery of great customer service, flexibility, and openness to new ideas that gained them the Best of the Region honor.
According to Tammy Herbig, Banquet Coordinator, “our philosophy is ‘People Helping People’. We are here for the community.” She describes their customer service as second to none. “I always say that we are the lucky ones that our customers chose to come to our place. We will always appreciate that you tried us and we try really hard to make sure that customers return....with the banquets and with our club patrons.”
Though quick to point out that it’s the team of 26 respectful employees that make the Eagle Club’s events successful, Herbig is an energetic profes-sional who is there for every event and helps wherever needed. Some people refer to her capability of multi-tasking as ‘the many hats of Tammy’.

An events coordinator for twelve years, some of which she spent at Navy Pier in Chicago, Herbig grew up in Freeport. Her mother, Nancy Harrington, frequently reminds her that, “This is your calling. You were always whipping up refreshments.” The Club is also a family affair for Herbig as she and her husband, Richard, met there.
“No matter what, the reception should be the way the bride and groom want it to be,” says Herbig. Staff is reminded to leave their own issues at the door before they enter to work an event. “We customize.” she continues, “The day is about you (the customer) not us.” Apparently this works, as the staff, for the most part, consists of young people who work there part-time until they leave for college.
The Eagles Club offers the following four spaces for banquets: Meeting Room #1 is 1,971 square feet with a banquet capacity of 129 people; Meeting Room #2 is 3,139 square feet with a banquet capacity of 227 people; Meeting Room #3 is 2,442 square feet with a banquet capacity of 165 people; and the Ballroom is 5,110 square feet with a banquet capacity of 356 people. Several of the rooms can be combined to provide increased capacity in a single room. Six hundred people can be accommodated when all the rooms are in use.
Food service is provided in-house with no outside catering allowed, with the exception of wedding cake and desserts. Charitable benefits can also bring in donated food. A full service bar is available.
Once a couple decides on a date, there are a minimum of five meetings with Herbig and the bridal couple and family. The last meeting is held two weeks prior to the event. During these meetings all the details are worked out. For example, the room is chosen, and the lighting. All pocket lights are on dim-mers so a variety of effects can be chosen. Will there be music? Live or re-corded? The facility has a Public Address System that plays CDs. Is there a theme? What kind of decorations will be used or brought in? The facil- u

ity has a variety of table décor that can be borrowed for the event.
Will the meal be served buffet style or plated? Will there be a bar, if so, cash or host provided? Will there be linens on the table (a variety of colors are available) or will plastic table coverings be used? What will the customized menu be?
Herbig is well-connected with the trends in wedding recep-tions and has lots of suggestions for different menu options. For example, a Chicago-style hot dog bar is a favorite, or a tailgate party. They have done Ha-waiian weddings with male and female roasted pigs. One of the newest trends is an hors d’oeuvres station with shots of tomato soup served with small wedges of grilled cheese sandwiches. She also notes that 30-40 percent of couples are opting to have a sig-nature drink - a couple’s punch, or a bride’s drink and a groom’s drink.
Many more traditional foods are also avail-able with rib eye and prime rib being the most popular plated entrée. They also have a pit with a capacity of grilling 96 rib eyes at a time, and if requested guests can grill their own steaks. For buffet service, herbed chicken breast in Chardonnay sauce and roast beef are the most popular entrees.
Herbig says that the majority of weddings catered at the Eagles Club are for over 300 guests and range in price from $3,000 to $6,500. However, in the past two years she’s noticed some scaling back. For example, what was 400 guests is now 250 guests. As always, smaller groups are also welcomed.
So what does one of the recent brides have to say about her wedding recep-tion at the Eagles? Tasha Marini’s reception was held there last September with a red, white, and black color theme for 300 guests.
One of the things Tasha appreciated was that Her-big took control on the day of the event. “I had nothing to worry about when it came to the reception. There was no clean up. She let us
decorate however we wanted and even let us use many of the vases, marbles, and table décor
owned by the Club, which saved us money. We also had a customized Candy Bar with a chocolate fountain which Tammy set up for us.”
The Fraternal Order of Eagles is a charitable organization known throughout the United States and Can-ada. It includes Aerie’s membership with a Women’s Auxiliary. Their handi-capped accessible facility is located at
1200 West Galena Avenue in Freeport and is available to the public for private
events. For more information, contact Tammy Herbig at 815-232-5615 or 815-599-8615.

For the 13th consecutive year, Journal-Standard readers have named Wayne Schofield Plumbing & Well Pump Ser-vice the Best Plumber Of The Region. When asked how he felt about the honor, Wayne Schofield remarked, “I feel blessed to have so many repeat cus-tomers. I am thankful for their loyalty and would like to express my thanks to them for again voting me number one for 13 years in a row. I would also like to thank my employees for their quality of workmanship and service to our cus-tomers. This plays a major part in our being voted #1.”
The firm, which is celebrating its 30th year in business in Freeport and the surrounding com-munities, is truly a family business. Wayne and his wife, Cheryl, have three children; a daughter, Tina, and two sons Brad and Danny. They u

also have eight grandchildren, including five who are 3 years olds. Brad and his wife, Tiffany, have five children including a set of twins and Tina and her husband, Bill Lingle, have triplets.
Of the company’s four employees, two are family. Brad is a licensed plumb-er who carries a backflow preventor license and has had training in radiant heat. Danny has completed his apprenticeship and will be taking his state license test this spring. Eric White and Jay Marten, the other two employees, are both licensed.
All are experienced in plumbing new homes, remodeling and repairing existing properties, well pumps and pressure systems, flushing and sanitizing wells, and the installation of water softeners and filter systems for iron rust and odor in well water. The company can also filter the chlorine taste and odor from city water.
Just before Wayne’s graduation from high school in 1969, Merle Woessner, his hometown plumber in Kent, asked him what he was going to do after high school graduation. When Wayne said he hadn’t made a decision yet, Woessner suggested that Wayne work for him for the summer; which he did. By the end of the summer, Wayne had developed an interest in plumbing. He worked under Woessner for another three years and then continued his ap-prenticeship in Freeport with Bill George Plumbing, where he worked for a decade before starting his own plumbing contractor business in 1982.
Wayne Schofield Plumbing & Well Pump Service sells, services, installs and warranties all major plumbing products. Hot water and steam heating systems, water heaters and softeners, drain cleaning, and the installation and replacement of rural well pumps are among other products and services they provide. Well water pump service, water softeners, and filter units for iron and odor-free well water are other examples.

to do work in your home? Are the employees licensed? Does the plumbing company carry liability and workman’s compensation insurance on their employees? “Don’t forget,” Schofield continues, “it is your right to ask for a Certificate of Insurance and to question which materials are covered by in-surance.”
When asked how the plumbing industry has changed in the past years, Schofield says, “There are new products out due to government regulations, such as electronic ignition and sealed combustion energy efficient water heaters, toilets that flush with 1.28 gallons of water and pex water tubing which is plastic.”
Wayne also explains that as a Licensed Plumbing Contractor, he is required to hold a separate license for many of the different aspects of plumbing.
“For example,” he says, “besides my personal Illinois State Plumber’s li-cense, I am also required to have an Illinois State Plumbing Contractor’s license, an Illinois State Pump Installer’s license, and an Illinois State Septic license. Other licenses I hold are lead certification, backflow cross-connec-tion control, and individual septic licenses for each county where I do busi-ness. The additional costs of licensing and insurance requirements have added to my costs of doing business. In recent years, the plumbers now also have to compete with the Home Centers and the internet,” he concluded.
Schofield remarked that his most rewarding projects are, “the ones when we start the project from the beginning, furnish the materials for which we are responsible and can give our customer a full warranty on the proj-ect.” He also notes that everything sold by Wayne Schofield Plumbing & Well Pump Service includes a one year parts and labor warranty. The company can be reached by calling 815-232-5732.

Sue Altensey of Preferred Real Estate of Illinois has been in the real estate business since July of 2005. She started as the personal assistant to Pat Barrett and be-came a licensed, independent real estate agent within three months. She was recognized by the local profes-sional Realtor’s organization in 2007 as being among the Million Dollar Producers - agents who sell real estate totaling one million dollars in a given year - and has been among this elite group ever since.
Actually, Sue’s mom, Arlene Lawson, now deceased, is credited with starting Sue’s real estate career. She called her attention to an ad in The Journal- Standard about an upcoming real estate class Barrett Inc. Realtors was offering. As she handed Sue the information about the night class, her mom said, “You should be a Realtor.”

“It’s all how things fall together,” says Sue. “You never know. If the class hadn’t been given just then, I wouldn’t be in real estate today.”
Actually Sue’s road to real estate has been re-markably non-tradition-al. In 1988, she began a career working with children which lasted un-til after she took the real estate class. She then started working part-time for Pat Barrett and got her real estate credentials.
According to Pat, “Sue was an easy student. She has a mind like a sponge and caught onto the real estate business right away; and the people part of it. She gets it. It’s almost like she has the extra sixth sense. Sue was born to sell real estate. She thrives on matching properties to people and the other way - people to properties.”
When told about her Best of the Region award, Sue said, “I want to thank all my customers and the community members who voted for me. I appre-ciate your confidence in me. I am also thankful for the support of Colleen Anderson, our office manager with whom I work closely. She helps to get the job done.”
What do some of Sue’s customers say about her? They send her notes of thanks, hoping to hang out sometime and appreciating all the help and time she gave them when in purchasing or selling their home.

“Computers are a great help in the real estate business. They get information to buyers and sellers faster and the quicker the turnaround, the better.”

Alan and Kathy Spencer are repeat customers from the Chicago suburbs who never lived in the homes she helped them purchase and then resell. The couple invested in real estate and ‘flipped’ four houses with Sue before the industry changed. They appreciated everything she did for them saying, “You have helped us in so many ways and did so many things above what a realtor should have to do! We appreciate it and we think so much of you.”
Sue also notes that mobile homes located in a mobile home park are sell-ing now. People who are downsizing and want to travel and go away for sev-eral months are finding this type of housing to be a good choice.
When asked what buyers are looking for today, Sue replies, “Kitchens and baths sell a home, also space. Many buyers today want a property that’s move-in ready. They don’t even want to pick up a paint brush.”
That’s why Sue suggests that sellers stage their property, declutter, and take care of any blemishes. She advises her listings as to what they need to do make the property show at its best and shares her contacts of people who can get the job done.
Sue Altensey is a member of the National Association of Realtors, the Il-linois Association of Realtors, and the Realtor Association of Northwest Il-linois. She is a member of Preferred Real Estate of Illinois, the largest real
estate company in Freeport, which has two office locations: 640 South State Street and 1858 South West Street in the Meadows Shopping Center. Sue can be reached in the Meadow’s office at 815-235-0002, by email at [email protected] or on her cell: 815-238-3505.
When she is not involved in realty, Sue likes to spend time with her hus-band, Perry and their children, Gary and Amy. She also loves to sew, par-ticularly making t-shirt quilts for her niece and daughter. Not surprising, she also likes to watch shows on HGTV.
Sue sums up changes to the real estate industryby noting that:
■ It’s a buyer’s market in all price ranges
■ Most all properties are priced low.
