BEST OF THE 2010 Sunday, April 25 brought to you by REGION

description

For 14 years the Journal-Standard¹s Best of the Region awards have been anxiously anticipated by readers and certainly no less by businesses, individuals and organizations throughout northwest Illinois. The ballots have been tallied and now we discover who took 1st, 2nd or 3rd places in the 66 voting categories. Who do voters say has the best bowl of soup or the tastiest steak in the area? Selling your home ‹ who gets the nod among realtors? Where are we tuning in on the radio dial? When we need a new or used car ‹ what dealers garner the top votes? All of these questions and many more are answered within this 2010 Best of the Region section.

By Mike Cowan, The Journal-Standard

For 14 years the Journal-Standard’sBest of the Region awards have beenanxiously anticipated by readers andcertainly no less by businesses, individ-uals and organizations throughoutnorthwest Illinois. The ballots have beentallied and now we discover who took1st, 2nd or 3rd places in the 66 votingcategories.

Who do voters say has the best bowl ofsoup or the tastiest steak in the area?Selling your home — who gets the nodamong realtors? Where are we tuning inon the radio dial? When we need a newor used car — what dealers garner the

top votes? All of thesequestions and many moreare answered within this2010 Best of the Regionsection.

Each year, Best of the Region shines itseditorial spotlight on a number of areabusinesses. The purpose is to personal-ize these enterprises to our readers. When we visit or use their products andservices, it helps to know a bit aboutthe owners and staff who are responsi-ble for continued success in the mar-ketplace.

The five businesses selected for storiesthis year include: Tim’s Auto Care, AutoRepair category; Royal Liquor and Pub,Liquor Store category; Maria’s Pizza,Pizza category; Midwest CommunityBank, Financial Institution category;and, Deininger’s Floral, Flower

Shop/Florist category.B.O.R ballots are published in the J-Sduring January and returns are broughtin to the newspaper office for tabulationby an independent third-party source.Specific results of vote count totals bycategory and business are not revealedin order to maintain contest integrity.

During the current period of economicuncertainty in the region, no businessor organization should assume thatB.O.R. voting results will remain thesame as time goes by. Success can befleeting and customers or clients willalways gravitate to those who are will-ing to offer the best in quality andfriendly service at an affordable price.

Congratulations to all the owners, man-agers and staff who have earned theright to be ranked among the Journal-Standard’s Best of the Region in 2010!

Fromthe very beginning, Timhas managed the carrepair operation, andCharity has taken care ofthe bookkeeping andfinancials. Their son,Jeremy Heiden, joined thebusiness about a year agoas service advisor, bring-ing a wide range of expe-rience that included aneight-year stint with Ford."I like working here," hesays, "it's a good, family-oriented atmosphere."

And it's not just the bloodrelatives who like the fam-ily feeling. Josh Laue, atechnician who has beenan integral part of Tim's

Customers are known bytheir names, not simply bythe vehicles they drive. Many families who patron-ize the car repair shop areinto the second and thirdgeneration. Specializing in foreign anddomestic cars, Tim's Auto

Frank's mom's first jobwas at Maria's in Rockfordwhich later became theinspiration when Frankwas naming his restaurantin Freeport. Located onthe former site of Gerry'sHamburgers, whereWalgreen's is now, Frankleased the building andopened Maria's Pizza'sand Dinners some 18years ago. He moved thebusiness to its presentlocation at 922 WestGalena Avenue in 1995.

While Frank was growingup in Rockford, he oftentraveled back and forth toItaly for visits with hisaunt and other relatives.

Along the way, he pickedup a passion for the busi-ness which is shared byother family membersincluding his brother,Vince, who owns Maria'sin Dixon, and his uncles inBrodhead and Orfaville,Wisconsin, who each owna Villa Pizza restaurant.

"I like the people ofFreeport," says Frank."They have really beengood to me since day one.I'd like to say, too, that Iappreciate the Journal-Standard readers whohave come here, support-ed the business, and votedMaria's the Best Place forPizza in the 2010 Best-Of-

The-Region Contest for thesecond year in a row.

When asked about whatqualities he attributed tothe restaurant's success,Frank listed the following:n Being friendly to

customersn Being a clean placen Serving quality and

consistent food that looks and tastes the same every time it'sordered

n Charging reasonableprices

Frank says he hasn'traised his prices in a cou-ple of years, and wants tokeep his pricing affordableso people can still to go

out or order in. One wayFrank says he accomplish-es this is to buy his ingre-dients in quantity to getgood vendor pricing whichhe passes along. He hasused the same principlevendor since the begin-ning for a variety of hisingredients, including theBlue Ribbon Mozzarellacheese he buys in blocksand grates on premises.Only 100% real cheese isused at Maria's. Thesausage is made fresh andwith ingredients from anold Italian neighborhoodin Chicago. The pastas areimported from Italy. Everydish Maria's serves, including the pizza dough,

family.

This is not to say thatFrank is ready to give upthe reins now. One of hispassions is equipment andputting-back and upgrad-ing the mechanics of theoperation continue to be apriority. He says that he isalways looking for a gooddeal and has located someexcellent machineryonline, including an eleva-tor to give easy access tostorage. Noting that customer serv-ice is among the hall-marks of the Liquor Store,Helm says that she andthe staff will try to findany product a customer islooking for and will gladlyorder it in to the store. For example, a customerwho had just returnedfrom France requestedthat they find a particularbrand of French liqueur. It was one of the hardestitems the staff had beenasked to locate, but in the

end, Royal Liquor wasable to get the brand toFreeport.

Less difficult and moreoften requested are winesfrom small California bou-tique wineries. A copy ofthe label or the informa-tion on it provides animportant clue in findinglesser known vintners.

Royal Liquor stocks over60 different kinds of winesfrom the major Californiawineries, the states ofWashington and Oregon,

Chile, Australia,Argentina, France, Spain,Italy, Japan, and Germany. In addition, they carrybeverages from theWollersheim Winery inPrairie Du Sac, Wisconsin,as well as wines fromMassbach Ridge Wineryand Three Lakes Winery inWisconsin. They also havea new chocolate red winefrom Holland calledChocoVine.

The store is known foroffering wines in a widerange of price points. In

the $10 per bottle pricerange, there are severalchoices including Avalon'sCabernet Sauvignon andPinot Noir, Chardonnay,Riesling, CabernetSauvignon, and Merlotfrom California's BogleWinery. Knowledgeablestaff can also make rec-ommendations using theWine Spectator Ratings asa guide.

When asked for a sugges-tion of a good wine for thewarmer weather of sum-mer, Sarah recommendedVoga's Pinot Grigio pricedat $12 and a Riesling fromChateau Ste Michelle fromColumbia Valley,
