Moffat County Sheriff KC Hume runs his office based on four core values: character, integrity, service and communication.

“We evaluate everything that we do based off of those core values, and at the end of the day it comes down to doing the right thing,” he said.

Hume has been working with Moffat County Sheriff’s Office for the past 21 years and in November 2014 he was elected Sheriff.

In his first year as sheriff, Hume has been voted Moffat County’s best elected official.

Hume said he was flattered to receive the honor, but a career in law enforcement has never been a selfish pursuit.

“It’s not about me, it never has been about me in 21 years here at the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office,” he said, adding that he was humbled by the award.

Hume thanked his deputies and everyone else who is a part of his team, calling them “the heart and soul of the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office.”

Recently, Hume received a message on Facebook from an individual thanking him for having a positive effect on his life 10 years ago.

“You said, ‘you’re not a criminal, son, don’t act like one.’ Words I haven’t forgot over a decade later,” Hume read from the message.

These types of interactions reinforce the fact that how you conduct yourself on a day-to-day basis, in every interaction, can have an impact on a person way down the road, Hume said.

Hume said his first year as sheriff has been going great and he looks forward to continuing to serve Moffat County.

“I’ve got a smile on my face every single day,” he said.

The voters have spoken, and the result is “Viva Italia!”

Carelli’s Pizzeria & Pasta repeated as the dominant force in Craig’s dining scene, with five wins in the 2015 Best of Moffat County, again picking up Best Lunch, Dinner, Italian Restaurant, Pizza and Sandwich.

For owners Brett and Stephanie Etzler, in charge of the operation since 2011, it comes down to the customers who make things possible.

“Everything we put into it is for them,” Stephanie said.

The Etzlers still have yet to make any drastic changes from when they bought the place, aside from adding some of their own touches, like an almost weekly rotating cycle of new microbrews, anchored by Dirty Hippie, from Palisade Brewing Company.

Good food and plenty of it remain the priority, and keeping some of the old favorites from before their time as owners, such as the award-winning DC sandwich, the significance of its namesake — Vice President Dick Cheney — remains a mystery to them.

With fresh new pizza recipes here and there whenever the mood strikes — ranging from lox to a Reuben style with pastrami and Thousand Island dressing in lieu of sauce — Brett’s culinary abilities as the head chef remain a selling point.

Last year, the restaurant opened a patio seating area, which the couple is looking forward to utilizing more and more this summer, bringing back their wine-tasting and beer events later this year.

Keeping it a place that’s a good daily hangout is the kind of priority Stephanie wants.

“It’s a really friendly place, we take care of our staff and they take care of our customers, so I think people get that vibe,” she said.

Server Jordan Clark has been part of the restaurant’s staff for nearly six years, her favorite part of the workplace being somewhat paradoxical: a sense of change that keeps things new, yet taking refuge in the steady stream of familiar faces.

“We’ve got a great customer base, it’s good to see them, some of them every day,” she said.

Even beyond Moffat County, the Carelli’s name is starting to command respect. Several weeks ago, the eatery received an official Certificate of Excellence from Internet travel guide TripAdvisor for their numerous high ratings from diners.

Though they take the honor of Best Italian Restaurant as a badge of honor, the Etzlers also hope that the community realizes pizza and pasta are only part of their offerings.

“It’s so much more than that,” Stephanie said, noting the steak, salmon, tenderloin and other menu items that fall outside that classification. “We want everybody to see what the buzz is all about.”

Masterworks Mechanical has been a mainstay in the Craig business community for nearly 27 years, providing for the Yampa Valley’s plumbing, heating, ventilation and air conditioning needs.

“I realized in Craig, you have to be able to do a little of everything to make it work,” Masterworks owner Dave DeRose said. “I think we try to provide a service that no one else in the community does and try to provide that service at a fair price.”

The company can tackle anything from plumbing leaks to water heaters, from broken furnaces to new residential or commercial construction projects from Craig to Steamboat Springs. Local residents may have enjoyed the fruits of Masterworks’ labor without even knowing it at Yampa Valley Bank or Bank of Colorado in Craig, where radiant heating in the concrete keeps the drive-through and sidewalks clear of snow in the wintertime.

DeRose chalks up much of his company’s success to talented employees.

“I started hiring people that were talented and then going out and finding work for them to do,” he said.

Masterworks currently employs 15 people, four of whom have been with the company for more than 10 years — Darin Hickey and Frank Baron for 18 years, Ken Scott for 12 and Bob Gillam for 10.

DeRose places a high priority on training his employees in new skills and providing the means for them to continue to expand their skill set. He has twice brought a carbon monoxide training to Craig, for example, which drew contractors from around the Western Slope and as far away as Fort Collins, Denver and Durango.

“I think the most rewarding thing we’re able to accomplish is when the fire department calls up for a carbon monoxide issue and we’re able to go in there and fix it,’ DeRose said. “To know that no one else can go in there and fix it and we’re able to save their lives.”

Masterworks is also an avid supporter of Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest Colorado and provides

maintenance services to the city-owned building used by the club for free. The company has also been a supporter of the Bear River Young Life and the Young Life Car Show for several years.

Sherman Romney moved to Craig 22 years ago as a fresh law school graduate.

But he didn’t just come to Craig to begin his career as an attorney, he brought with him a young family who has called Craig home ever since.

“I’ve raised my kids here in Craig, and my wife and I love living here,” Romney said.

Romney Law Office, 415 W. Victory Way, is a general-practice law firm.

“Street-level law firm, we help people with their basic legal needs,” Romney said.

The firm’s practice areas include criminal defense, elder law, probate, business transactions, bankruptcy, family law, estate planning and personal injury.

To help cover such a wide range of litigation, Romney Law Office employees two additional attorneys.

“Hopefully, most things that come our way we can help between the three of us,” Romney said.

After 22 years, Romney said he and his wife have loved living in Craig.

KS Kreationsbakes up winning reputation with homemade treats


Mother/daughter team Kandee Dilldine and Kassie Vesely have a pretty sweet gig.

The sugary output of KS Kreations won it the honor of Best Bakery in the 2015 Best of Moffat County voting.

Whether you prefer cakes, cookies, lemon bars, brownies, cinnamon rolls or any number of other items in the store’s inventory, there’s one key word: homemade.

“I think there’s that kind of taste and feel,” Dilldine said, noting that customers regularly mention the superiority of food made from scratch.

Dilldine and Vesely have been working together as business partners since 2011. KS Kreations is a multigenerational shop, with Dilldine’s mother, Sandi, running the craft side of things, also a winner in this year’s contest for Best Sewing/Craft/Quilting Store.

Vesely learned much of her trade through 4-H Club cake decorating and had previously worked at now-defunct downtown café Serendipity, and when that closed, the need for a supplier of scrumptious baked goods was considerable. The KS menu of sandwiches has also done well in recent months, but the biggest draw is by far the list of desserts and pastries.

The creators in question have a hard time picking their own favorites, though Dilldine said the cream cheese croissants may be her preference.

Vessely said the delight in seeing a customer get exactly what they wanted never gets stale. Some cakes she’s crafted — winning second place for Best Cake in the area —

have been extremely complicated in design, involving the kind of architecture that rivals that of a house.

A Mickey Mouse masterpiece repeatedly threatening to fall apart, though luckily it was for her own son and not a paying client.

“I made the whole head out of chocolate, and it kept wanting to fall over,” she said. “I’ve learned more strategies since then. When people want extravagant cakes, they need structure underneath.”

Both Dilldine and Vesely enjoy working together, as well as the flexibility that can come from being self-employed. Sometimes they are “at the whim of the customer” for hours on end, said Dilldine, but more often than not, what pops out of the oven is worth the labor.

“I like doing what I do, and not many people can say that,” Vessely said.

Steve Bell, owner of the Furniture Gallery of Craig, was not surprised when his store took first place in Best of Moffat County’s furniture store category.

“We get that every year,” he said.

The number one focus for his business, and perhaps the reason it has been so successful in Best of Moffat County, is customer service, Bell said.

“We take care of our customers if they have an issue,” he said. “I mean customer service has got to be everything, if you don’t have customer service — you don’t have a business.”

Bell lives in Palm Beach, Florida, and Jeff Smith manages the stores day-to-day operations.

Although there may be more than 2,000 miles between them, the two men are together on the importance of customer service

“Customer problems are addressed and taken care of,” Smith said. “If we say we’re going to do something, we do it."

Aside from excellent customer service, Furniture Gallery of Craig also has a selection of items that cannot be found elsewhere.

According to Bell, the only other store in the area where you can purchase a La-Z-Boy recliner is 160 miles away from his store in Craig, 385 Ranney St.

“In the Yampa Valley we are the number one La-Z-Boy dealer,” Bell said.

Furniture Gallery of Craig also carries six different lines of mattress.

“We have a tremendous amount of selection for mattresses,” Bell said, adding that last year 38 percent of the stores sales came from mattresses.

Bell recommends buying a new mattress about every eight years. He said over the course of those eight years, your body changes and so does the mattress so it might not be as comfortable.

“You might think that you don’t need one but believe me… you feel the difference,” he said.

Megan Jones has an important role in Moffat County — she keeps people beautiful and confident.

And Moffat County has noticed. Megan was voted the best hair stylist in 2015. Not only that, but her salon was voted best hair salon in the county.

“I feel honored, because Moffat County voted me the best, and it makes me happy,” Jones said.

Megan’s hard work and dedication to her craft has grown significantly in the last year.

In January, Megan and her team moved the salon from a rented space at 571 Yampa Ave to 518 Yampa Ave. in downtown Craig. She bought the building from Blake and Charlene Abdella, giving her customers a state-of-the-art 2,500-square-foot hair salon.

“When your dreams come true, I can’t explain the feeling. Yeah, it’s amazing,” Megan said. “My clients

feel like my family. When I come to work, it’s like family away from family.”

Megan has two young kids, Iesha, 8, and Deagan, 6, and she looks forward to providing a bright future for her children.

“I don’t want to stop with this salon,” she said. “I want to open businesses throughout Colorado and have franchises.”

She’d like to eventually open a Capo Salon in Glenwood Springs and Fort Collins.

As for her staff, they’re thrilled to work at Capo. Megan has two other women who work at the salon.

“These are my best friends,” said stylist Candice Mathers-Haack, adding that it's wonderful working with her girlfriends.

Angela Doane also works at Capo, and she grew up with Candice and Megan.

“I just love working with these two girls,” Angela said.

And the customers seem to enjoy the atmosphere too.

“I like it. I like it a lot,” said Burt Clements. “When they redid this

place, they really made it homey.”

Great Divide Cleaning Service:Owners deep clean when it comes to good work


It’s a dirty job, but someone’s gotta do it and do it well.

The staff members of Great Divide Cleaning Service are those people when it comes to keeping the floors of Northwest Colorado spiffy as the Best Carpet Cleaners of Moffat County.

Dale and Andrea Camp have owned the business since 2001 and provide cleaning of all sorts to Craig, Meeker, Hayden and even parts of Wyoming, touching up carpet, linoleum, tile, upholstery, concrete, vehicles, boats and plenty more.

“You just gotta know your stains,” Dale said of the different types of challenges he sees in various forms.

Since purchasing the service from previous owner Steve Herman, they’ve also expanded the ductwork and water and fire damage restoration elements, Andrea said.

Ironically, one of the few floors for which they can’t provide professional cleaning is in the office/living area of their home and headquarters on Craig’s East 10th Street, the wooden flooring requiring a different type of process than they use.

Don’t worry, the house and floors are still immaculate, and the space allows them to stay close to family.

“It works well, because then you don’t have the added expense of having an extra location and it’s all in one central location,”

Andrea said. “All our vans, all our equipment is right here, so that makes it handy for us.”

The Camps also have recently seen employee Tanner Snyder step up and help run things while Dale was temporarily unavailable to work in the past month.

“Kudos to him for all he’s done for us,” Dale said of Snyder.

The most important thing about a business of any type, cleaning or otherwise, the couple said, is to keep a squeaky clean relationship with the customers. Both Andrea and Dale grew up in the region, and being part of the scene allows them to serve the community that has given them so many great experiences throughout the years.

“Interaction with some great people is the best part of it by far,” Dale said. “We love our customer base. There’s great people in Craig.”
