information you need for the day. The Senior Leadership team and staff are on duty

before school each morning and will start sending students into school from 8:35am.

You can arrive at school from 8:00am. If you arrive before 8.30am you can go into

the restaurant area for breakfast club.

You will see that after lesson 4 you have a 20 minute reading session. This reading

session is aimed at encouraging you to read widely and often so that you continue to

build a love of reading, as well as develop your reading, writing and speaking skills.

What time do my lessons start and finish?

We would love to create a wall of bees all

about our new Y7 students.

Can you create a bee that

tells us all about you?

You can design your bee

however you like – draw a

self-portrait, tell us about

your pets, favourite

sports, books, colour,

music, TV, superhero –

whatever you would like

us to know.

There is a bee outline for

you to use, or you could

create your own!

Bring your bee with you on

your first day in

September.

HLC SCHOOL VISION

At Hadley Learning Community, we care passionately about what you learn and how

we teach you. We have thought carefully about your education to make sure that

we help you to grow as a learner and as a young person, who is ready to jump into

life’s thrills and challenges.

At HLC our values are

Belong Respect Inspire Succeed Enjoy

We want to make sure that you are immersed in our kind and caring culture as an

HLC student. We will support you in developing your character to enable you to use

our HLC values to enhance your experiences within and beyond school. Whether it

is furthering your skills in learning, performing, sports or the arts, our driving

principle is to ensure that we help you to become the best that you can be.

We want you to enjoy your learning and become an outward looking individual who

has personal success. We can’t wait to walk alongside you as take your first step in

your secondary learning journey.

At HLC we have five core values which should be shown by

students at ALL times. How will you show Belonging, Respect,

Being Inspired, Succeed and Enjoy to be a good student at HLC?

Write in the boxes below:

3 areas: What I will do to improve

1.

2.

3.

The 3 subjects I would like to focus on this year are:

1.

Personal Targets: (e.g. remember to bring my homework in on time)

3.

2.

Like the new beginning you are soon to embark on in September, the

idea of new beginnings is a common theme in literature. Consider the

opening of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone when Harry first goes

to Hogwarts, or when Alice first enters Wonderland in Alice in

Wonderland, or even when Bilbo Baggins first meets the dwarves in The

Hobbit.

“BEST OF ME” WRITING

Task 1: What other books or films can you think of where the

protagonist experiences a ‘new beginning’?

New Beginnings

In The Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen

leaves District 12 for the Capitol.

Mind map your ideas below

“BEST OF ME” WRITING

Task 2: Read this excerpt from Chapter 5 of The Hunger Games.

In this part of the story, Katniss and Peeta have been selected to take part in the

hunger games and are on their way to the Capitol via train.

‘The train finally begins to slow and suddenly bright light floods the compart-

ment. We can’t help it. Both Peeta and I run to the window to see what we’ve

only seen on television, the Capitol, the ruling city of Panem. The cameras

haven’t lied about its grandeur. If anything, they have not quite captured the

magnificence of the glistening buildings in a rainbow of hues that tower into

the air, the shiny cars that roll down the wide paved streets, the oddly dressed

people with bizarre hair and painted faces who have never missed a meal. All

the colors seem artificial, the pinks too deep, the greens too bright, the yel-

lows painful to the eyes, like flat round disks of hard candy we can never af-

ford to buy at the tiny sweet shop in District 12. The people begin to point at

us eagerly as they recognize a tribute train rolling into the city. I step away

from the window, sickened by their excitement, knowing they can’t wait to

watch us die’.

Task 3: How do you think the speaker in this part of the story might

feel? List 5 ideas below.

(Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone). (Alice in Wonderland). (The Jungle Book).

“BEST OF ME” WRITING

Task 4: Using all of the inspiration you have gained from the previous tasks,

write the opening to a chapter where a character experiences a new

beginning. When writing your chapter, think carefully about the language devices

and vocabulary you use; you want to make the description vivid and engaging for

the reader.

“BEST OF ME” HISTORY -

At primary school I have studied the following History topics: __________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________

We know that lots of students enjoy watching Horrible Histories and might have some extra knowledge on historical topics which have come from other sources. This is your opportunity to tell us about the most horrible period. This might need you to complete some research or maybe watch some Horrible histories to get some extra ideas.

Write your answer in as much detail below:

I think the most horrible period in history is _______________________________

because ________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________ _________________________________ _________________________________ _________________________________ _________________________________ _________________________________

Artwork

This page is for you to show us your artistic skills. Draw any

picture below. Remember it needs to be your best work. Consider

use of colour, form, texture, tone, pattern, shape and lines.

Background Information on Joule Island

• The population of Joule Island has increased by 400% in the last 20 years.

• Existing fossil fuel power stations are insufficient and will be decommissioned in next 5 years.

• $1 billion has been budgeted for the design and building of a new energy infrastructure for the island.

• A minimum of 25MW of power must be available during ‘average’ demand times and and a maximum of 40MW of power should be achievable.

• A 100% renewable power scheme is not a realistic option for the island

Joule Island has a climate similar to New England and is situated a few hundred miles off the US east coast. It

needs to supply/create its own energy and has a range of natural options that can be harnessed. You must

choose which sources of energy you will use. The island needs a minimum of 25 MW (megawatts) of power at

any one time and the maximum demand would be 35 MW. That means that it must always be able to generate at

least 25 MW, during both the winter and summer.

Tasks.

1) Research different renewable energy options looking at the advantages, disadvantages and cost of these en-

ergy sources. Which will you use for you island? Where will you put them?

Design an energy scheme for Joule Island that does not go over $1 billion. The scheme should generate a mini-

mum of 25MW of energy using renewable energy sources.

Think about these points.

• total cost

• Area required to build power stations

• Give a reason why you chose the power supplies that you have chosen for Joule Island Think about the Advantages and Disadvantages and use the resources on Joule Island

2) Create a poster or build a model and take a photo of you island. You need to show the schematic drawing/

layout of the island and power plants’ locations reflecting your plan. (You will need to use the information on the

diagram above to help you.
