One of the best compliments that can be paid to a venue is that years

down the road it still has the look, feel and appeal it oozed when it

opened. As Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn., celebrates its 15th

birthday this year, it is one such facility that defies the years and has the

same aura of newness and freshness it did in 2000 when the doors first

opened.

“Believe it or not, people still call this the new building in town,”

said venue veteran Jack Larson, who joined Xcel Energy Center as vice

president/general manager the year after it opened after having worked

at the Target Center in Minneapolis. “It still has a new-building feel to it,

and the ownership group has committed to keeping the building first-

The 15-year-old, 17,954-seat XcelEnergy Center, which looks andoperates like a new arena eventoday, is owned by the city of St.Paul and operated by MinnesotaSports & Entertainment. Anchor

tenant is the Minnesota Wild of the NationalHockey League.

In fact, it was the city’s desire to have anNHL franchise that set the wheels in motionfor the $165-million construction to even takeplace. The Minnesota North Stars began play-ing in the NHL in 1967 but relocated to Dallasin the fall of 1993. Since Minnesota withouthockey is like a pancake without syrup, littletime was wasted in building a facility thatwould one day bring professional hockey backto the Land of 10,000 Lakes. When the doorsopened on Sept. 29, 2000, for the Wild’s firstpreseason game, that day had arrived.

“To build this building at the price it wasbuilt … it’s unheard of,” said Jim Ibister, vicepresident of facility administration for theMinnesota Wild and general manager of St. PaulRiverCentre convention center that is part of thedowntown complex that, in addition to theattached Xcel Energy Center, also includes RoyWilkins Auditorium and Ordway Center for the

Performing Arts. “This was not a building builton the cheap. It was built with really specificthings in mind. We take care of it and want to begood stewards for the building because it’s aplace that Minnesotans really, really care about.”

Indeed, Minnesotans are a devoted fanbase as evidenced by the 400 consecutive selloutcrowds that attended Wild games from thevenue’s inception through Oct. 16, 2010. Thevenue hosts four major high school hockeytournaments including the state high schoolhockey championship, a two-day event inMarch with two sessions per day that attractcapacity crowds and bring some 100,000 peoplethrough the venue for the four sessions. Theevent is televised and is one of the biggestannual events in the state. The venue will hostthe 2016 National Figure SkatingChampionships in January as well as theNCAA regional hockey tournament. It hasbeen awarded the 2018 Frozen Four, collegehockey’s equivalent of basketball’s Final Four.It will mark the third time Xcel Energy Centerhas hosted the three-game event of two semifi-nals and the national championship.

None of this would even be talked abouthad the NHL not awarded a franchise to the

Too often sustainability is used as abuzzword or catchphrase. Thatis not the situation at the XcelEnergy Center, where it is livedand breathed in the life of thevenue.

“We are very green and our sustainabilityefforts are near the top in the country,” saidJack Larson, the venue’s vice president/generalmanager. “We promote that fact to shows andconcerts coming into the arena. Many of thosewant to work with us at that point to help usaccomplish even more.”

The venue had always been green in thetraditional sense that people think of with thelikes of recycling bins stationed inside and out-side the facility. But there was more that couldbe done, and Larson and his team knew it.

“We started about six years ago with theidea about how to become more sustainable inour operation,” said Jim Ibister, vice presidentof facility administration for the MinnesotaWild and general manager of the St. PaulRiverCentre. “We were recycling but we knew

we could do a lot more than that. We were notgoing to rush anything. We wanted to be cau-tious and careful about building a strong foun-dation from the internal side, where wechanged a lot of behind-the-scenes processes.

“Most of all, we want to be transparentwith our guests about sustainability. We putout reports for everybody to see so that theyknew that this was something we were goingto do together. A lot of it is just tapping into aMidwest mentality of not being wasteful.”

Ibister said that many fans and people inthe community asked specifically what thevenue was doing in the area of sustainabilityand even if more could be done. Just placingmore containers about the property was notgoing to suffice.

“We were not going to jump in and throwa bunch of receptive containers out therebecause there’s enough dubiousness out thereabout sustainability and all this stuff as itrelates to waste,” Ibister said. “It ends up in alandfill anyway, they say.

“We did a lot of things with sustainability

before we even touched a guest so that whenwe got to the point where we were out in frontof people we could show them what we weredoing with our systems and our processes. Wewere still going to make mistakes but weweren’t going to make those big mistakeswhere somebody is going to be rolling by witha big dumpster and putting all the bottles andcans and trash and compost in it and rollingaway. We had built a good enough foundationbefore we made a big public push for that. Ithink that became really, really critical becausewe then were able to go out and talk to ourguests about it. We got quite a bit of positivefeedback about how we can do more of that.”

In 2014 alone the campus earned certifica-tions in Green Globes, APEX/ASTM andLEED, making it the first complex in theworld to receive all three of the certifications.

Some of the steps taken include 60% of allwaste is recycled, 40% of staff commute by bus,bike, carpool or an efficient vehicle and 90% ofcleaning products meet green standards.

Even at that, Ibister said it is not enough

to just spew numbers to the public, but thatachieving sustainability success includesengaging that same public.

“You get interactions of hey, did you dothis and can you do this?” he said. “There wasa lot more of that. I think Minnesota again is aplace where the environment is really impor-tant. Obviously water is really important, andkeeping our initiatives tied to where we thinkour fans are most engaged is also really impor-tant. We made sure that our background andour foundation were really strong so that whenwe went to the guests they believed us, we werecredible and we weren’t just going out to getcertifications. That said, we were first in theworld with three major certifications at thesame time. They weren’t just pieces of paper orthey weren’t that certificate of participation.They were really earned.”

The venue has partnered with the NHLto join Change the Course, a national initiativepromoting water conservation and restoration.

“Water conservation is important to usall,” Ibister said. “Obviously we play on a sheetof ice and this was a particular initiative wewanted to push.

“Once again, we were very transparentwith our fans and community. We talked

about our processes and put out reports foreverybody to see so that they knew that thiswas something we were going to do together. Ithink it’s been really successful because ofthat.”

Ibister cites again the mindset ofMinnesotans which is one of not being wasteful.

“What are you doing? Don’t waste that,”he said. “We hear a lot of that, whether it isabout our trash or our electrical. We’ve seenelectricity … it’s not about sustainability andnot necessarily about the environment, but it’sthe thriftiness of it almost, right?”

Ibister said the water conservation initia-tive was one where the message was important,being directed to citizens from the Land of10,000 Lakes.

“We think water is really important tous,” he said. “You don’t play as much hockey aswe do in the state and have the nickname ourstate has without water being important to thearea.

“One of our initiatives focuses each yearon one particular initiative and pushing it a lit-tle bit publicly. We decided we’d get into awater campaign. One of the things we tied intowith the NHL was a program that was helpingto restore water into the Colorado River basin.

As we sat and discussed this it was importantto the NHL so we wanted to help them but atthe same time thought this was going to be ahard sell.

“Why would Minnesotans care about theColorado River basin? There are a lot of rea-sons relating to fruit, vegetables and produce.Water conservation is important to all of us,but we knew we had to get involved at a locallevel.”

To that end, the venue staff had an oppor-tunity to adopt a portion of the river, makingfor a stronger connection and greater sense ofrallying to a cause.

“It gave us a great opportunity to get con-nected with a local university and their envi-ronmental program and talk about storm drainprotection and other things,” Ibister said.“They had a program called Storm DrainGoalie that was about protecting the stormdrain from fertilizers and those kinds ofthings. The more we connected locally themore we can connect things to fans that theycare about the more credibility we have. It’s auniversal thing.”

Minnesota Wild contingent on the venue beingconstructed. Locally based corporate sponsorXcel Energy purchased the naming rightsfrom the outset at a cost of $75 million spreadover 25 years.

The original design included plenty ofrock and comfortable tones without muchmarble or glass. It was important to stand apartand go against any of the color schemes ortrends of the day.

“Remember how back in the ‘80s every-one was going with teal and mauve?” Ibisterasked. “Had they gone with a trend like that itwould have looked out of date immediately.This was designed as a hockey cathedral. It’swhat the people wanted.”

The people do matter at Xcel Energy Center,sometimes referred to locally simply as “The X”although Larson understandably prefers for folksto call the venue by the full sponsor’s name.

“Before we even played our first game,the team retired the jersey number 1 that hangsin the rafters today and is for the fans,” Larsonsaid. “Our fans are the lifeblood of the organi-zation. You have to make them number 1.”

The venue’s unique design features anopen concourse bowl that contains no hard

walls and allows people to see fully across thearena. The venue was constructed at angleswhich creates a feel of being on top of theaction, even from upper level seats.

“When I take people on a tour, I often talkabout the whole design concept idea and howit works into our relationships with our fans,”Ibister said. “There are connections. From onelevel to another you can see down, you can seeup, you can see through into the concourse.There are a lot of portables and it’s very open.It’s a very fluid space that allows fans to be fair-ly connected regardless where they’re sitting.”

It’s not just hockey fans who have ravedabout the venue’s design, either.

“Pavarotti gave a performance in the earlyyears and he talked about how it remindedhim of an old-style opera house in that therewasn’t a section leading to a section but was anoverlapping feeling of each section and howeverybody was on top of the stage. That’sexactly what we wanted,” Ibister said.

The venue includes three levels and onesuite level. As dynamics have changed over theyears with suite purchases and rentals, so toohas the design of those suites.

“We had some loge boxes at the club level inthe arena, and removed three sections of seats on

the west end club level and replaced them withloge seating called the Bud Light Top ShelfLounge,” Larson said. “They have been verypopular. It’s an all-inclusive purchase and a four-seat loge. Think of them like mini-suites with all-inclusive food and beverage. It’s a buying trend.It is more affordable and smaller for companiesor individuals who don’t need the bigger suite.”

Technology is one of the bigger endeavors andpoints of emphasis for both present and future andis important to keep the venue relevant and premier.

“I would say that the interaction withhow guests use technology is one of our biggestfocuses,” Ibister said. “Our technology infra-structure is about Wi-Fi and apps and givingour fans an opportunity to make an evengreater connection to each other and the team.

Looking ahead, Ibister said that technolo-gy must be about the guest experience. If thatmeans trying to guess about the dollar returnon Wi-Fi, so be it.

Other additions include a new point of salesystem. Bypass installed 250 POS units distrib-uted throughout the arena over a five-day periodin July, which went into service at the July 31 5Seconds of Summer concert. Leading up to theinstallation, the Bypass services team workedwith the Levy team to ensure all menu and inven-tory data was compiled and entered accurately.

“The Bypass business model divergesfrom traditional offerings by distributinghardware at cost and charging for software asa service over a specific license term,” saidChad Weiner, vice president of sales forBypass. “Periodic software updates are madeavailable during the period of the softwarelicense. This approach recognizes that a pointof sale/commerce solution must evolve withthe changing objectives of the venue.”

And that objective is putting the fan first,as Ibister and Larson emphasized.

Other additions include new video boardsand ribbon boards installed by Daktronics andnew seating handled by Irwin Seating. Inorder to make all of this function, Larson’sstaff includes 55 fulltime employees and morethan 400 who work part time.

“There’s the sentiment that maybe it istime to modernize this or get away from thekitschiness of that,” Ibister said. “I’m sure therewill be some serious discussions both from afan perspective and internally because it isbeloved as it is. It will be an interesting 15 yearsgoing forward.”
