Welcome to our 5th Annual Bull sale. We understand that this is a busy time of year and that our sale happens once again to fall on Easter weekend, so we hope that you will bring your family, enjoy lunch and share the day with us. It is nice to finally sit down to write a welcome without trying to gloss over a rather gloomy looking industry. Everyone still here to read this is deserving of a rather large congratulations for their perseverance. All of the signs now seem to point to a prolonged period of good health in the cattle business and finally significant reward to all of you that are so dedicated to raising good cattle.

For nearly 80 years we have been raising cattle here and as usual we continue to raise them in asimilar environment to that of our customers. Our cattle travel 40 miles from home in the summer and climb to 7500 feet in elevation. You will notice the weaning dates on the bulls are not until the end of October; this is when the snow or the wolves, as has been the case recently, drives the cattle out of the alpine. EVERY cow here has taken a calf to the range every year and come home to be in calf to our short breeding season. We strive to produce cattle that are trouble free and efficient. We pursue carcass excellence through ultrasound testing and our own carcass program. These cattle are not pampered, it is difficult to find them from May until October never mind creep feed them. We grow the bulls over winter to be ready to work for you, not to be ready for slaughter.

We are bringing to town a very strong offering with bulls in everybody’s type and price range. . I believe that there are bulls here that can excel in any situation that you may have. The red and black Simmentals are solid from end to end and this is the most powerful set of Red Angus bulls we have ever raised with a good mix for heifers or cows. All of the bulls are backed by our time tested guarantee. We live in a big province and enjoy customers from end to end, we will do our best to deliver your bull to you after the sale, if not we will get him to a central location near you.

If you cannot make it to the sale or would like a little more time and information, the bulls will all be available for viewing at home until March 30th, the coffee is always on. Mitchell Cattle Co. has invested in the health of their herd of cattle for many years through a comprehensive herd health strategy. Currently all breeding females and bulls receive an annual vaccination prior to the breeding season to protect against all the important reproductive viruses and bacteria including IBR, Type I and II BVD and Leptosprirosis. All calves are vaccinated at branding to provide protection against the important viruses and bacteria causing respiratory and clostridial diseases. Currently calves receive a modified live vaccine against IBR, Type I and II BVD, BRSV, and PI3, as well as a modified live bacterin against shipping fever and a killed bacterin against Histophilus somnus, Blackleg and other clostridial diseases. At weaning all bull and heifer calves receive a booster with the same vaccines and bacterins used at branding.

In late fall, all cows, bulls and weaned calves are treated with a topical endectocide to control internal and external parasites. As a further assurance of herd health, all MCC bulls in the sale have been tested and found negative for persistent infection of the BVD virus.

All bulls in the sale have passed a thorough breeding soundness exam to evaluate scrotal size and shape, semen motility and morphology, and structural soundness. Through my long standing veterinary relationship with Mitchell Cattle Co., I also know that you can rest assured that each bull is out of a sound, solid, productive cow. Ian and Anja rigorously select their herd for fertility, sound udders, correct feet and legs, and temperament. These cows go to the mountain with their calf each year and come back in the fall for pregnancy testing. Open and late cows, or cows not meeting Mitchell Cattle Co strict criteria, are culled – no excuses, no exceptions.

We purchased 33W out of Porters sale as the high selling bull of the day. Carcass quality is extremely important to us in our meat program and as a seedstock producer. 33W registered an 18 inch ribeye, AAA marbling with 68.5% yield as a yearling. 129Y’s numbers follow through he ranks in the top 10% of the breed for ribeye area and the top 20% for marbling and as a bonus he is out of a rock solid old cow.

We have as many as 20 walking herd bulls here at any given time. We are required to have 15 to meet our obligations of 1:25 on our forestry range permit, as well as our pasture requirements. We have, in the past, used AI extensively and have found that there are significant advantages to using walking bulls. It is amazing how many high profile, highly marketed bulls are not sound enough to handle our conditions on range in the mountains. With the bulls physically here it doesn’t take long to sort out the bulls that can’t cut it. It is not the least expensive route as we don’t ever hold back on investing in the top genetics from some of the most reputable breeders in Canada, often buying the high selling bulls or bulls from the front end of their programs. Our goal is to provide sound functional cattle to the commercial cattleman that will thrive in their conditions. A large portion of our business is direct marketing beef. We butcher the 850 to 950 weight calves right off the cow; dressing 500 pounds. We sell commercial calves as well as grain and grass finished fats, thus we constantly strive towards improving carcass quality.

Springcreek Rebel 57W We purchased “Rebel” from Spring Creek Simmentals in Saskatchewan as a calving ease specialist and on the strength of his dam, she later traded for $10000 for a half interest and is still in a transplant program. He excels in calving ease, maternal calving ease and rib eye area. We used 57W exclusively on our Simmental heifers as a yearling and more heavily on our cows this year. Sire of lots 24-30.

Breeder’s Guarantee:The animals in this sale are guaranteed per the breeders guarantee of the breed association they are registered with. In the unlikely event that a bull proves to be a non-breeder he will be replaced with a bull of equal value. Should this not be possible an adjustment will be made to reflect the value of the bull in question or a credit will be issued towards a future purchase. At no time will we be responsible for any costs exceeding the original purchase price and no guarantee is made that semen from any bull will freeze.
