It goes best with delicate, white- fleshed fish dishes made with butter and lemon. 2013 Yalumba, Y Series Viognier, South Australia £10, Sainsbury’s The viognier leader in the southern hemisphere, Yalumba has, once again, made a jaw-droppingly brilliant wine in 2013. Peach kernels, nutmeg, digestive biscuits and apricot blossom flood the senses, and the finish is rapier-sharp, too. 2013 Waitrose Touraine Sauvignon Blanc, Loire, France £7.99, Waitrose If you don’t want to spend £12 or more on a sancerre or pouilly-fumé (see below) you can have nearly the same class and flavour for just £8 with this wine made from the same grape but from a region a little further along the Loire river. 2012 Marquès de Casa Concha Chardonnay, Concha y Toro, Limari, Chile £11.99, down to £9.99 until 1 July, Tesco This is a honeyed, gently oaked chardonnay with a golden hue and a palate-enriching flavour. Fruit-driven with layers of succulence, this label has a cult following – and there are only 50 cases in the country so stock up today or you’ll miss it. This budget riesling is silky, smooth, fruity and grapey and I am amazed at the finesse it embodies given its keen price tag. Drink it with Malaysian or Vietnamese cuisine. 2013 Punto 8, Sicilia Ottoventi, Italy £7.75, The Wine Society, 01438 741177 This stunning bottle reeks of Italian styling and the wine inside is as exciting as the packaging. The often boring and grumpy grillo grape has been transformed into a shimmering diva with a sexy, faintly tropical nose and a raspingly dry finish. 2013 Taste The Difference Albariño, Rías Baixas, Spain £8, Sainsbury’s TTD Albariño is particularly impressive given that this grape needs drama and poise, and in this version it has both. Violets and pineapple husk notes infiltrate the senses and the palate is pure liquid dynamics. This is truly a connoisseur’s delight. 2012 Dominio del Plata, Torrontés, Susana Balbo, Mendoza, Argentina £8.99, Marks & Spencer Torrontés is an oddball variety which works wonders in the wilds of Argentina. Many are fruit cocktaily and a little soapy but Susana Balbo is a true expert and she has fashioned a wistful, haunting, dry and enchanting wine. 2013 Valençay, Le Clos du Château, Claude Lafond, Loire, France £9.99, down to £8.49 each when you buy 2 until 30 June, Majestic There is a touch of grapey sweetness on the finish of this lemon tart-scented wine.
